After CJB threw the last TD he said something to the effect that CJB dropped it into a shoe box because of the awesome precision.

Any one have it on tape for the exact quote?

Seems like something that should have been said by somebody before. I've heard it called being "dropped into the bucket."

I do remember right before the play he guaranteed Iowa would keep it on the ground because with a field goal the Iowa defense was playing well enough to win.

On the replay he stated more or less the Hawks proved him wrong.

Seems like we all (me included) bitch about the Ferentz "Safe" mode. At this point, WTH, fake field goals and rollout passes when the book calls for something else give us another opportunity to be pissy. As for today, Clowns lose & that's all that matters.

I think 68 was being sarcastic. Maybe we are seeing a new side to the good captain. Sometimes it's smart football to grind it out. Last night MSU could have run another minute off the lock and used up Oregon's time outs. Could have lost that one when the WR was wide open and overthrown, game of inches.

If the remaining teams on the schedule now sense that Iowa is unpredictable, and that they have a dual-threat QB...well, that is a good thing.

The play calling at the end of the first half was bizarre, gosh, it had to be a mistake in coaching/timeouts, time left on the clock, or something, didn't it? I can't imagine a team planning to run a fake field goal into the end-zone with no time or timeouts remaining, from that distance.

Running on 2nd down was really stupid, but the 3rd down call made sense. I was horrified about the fake field goal, but now I'm wondering if they just decided he couldn't make it from there (wind?)

Throwing the last TD pass was not smart football just like the fake FG.

I disagree about throwing the football to win the game. There was still enough time on the clock for ISU to march down the field and score a TD. You put teams away, you stomp on them when they're down and you don't let them get back up. If anything, I have to commend Ferentz for not settling for FG's and trying to get TD's on the board. One of our shortcomings of late has been settling for FG's too often which of course leaves the other team more in the game.

Furthermore, it's smart play calling when the defense is expecting you to run and you throw the ball. Your QB knows that you don't force a bad throw into bad coverage in the situation. If a guy is open, like he was, you take your shot.

I'm not going to complain about that one bit.

The fake field goal was actually a decent call.

I can understand people on here arguing that we should have just kicked a field goal. What amazes me is that people question the running down of the clock prior to the fake attempt: If they would have stopped the clock with more time on it, that would have basically spelled out, in bright neon lights, that we were going to fake it.

Really, the way they did it was the only way they would have had a realistic shot.

I was suprised after watching it to hear the roar of the crowd. A lot of Iowa fans there. I wonder if the 5,800 new stadium seats allowed more Hawkeye fans to attend than in previous years?

Had this thought the whole game. Initially I figured that was the Clone fans groaning

I'm sure you're probably a fine fella, but you have to be COMPLETELY insane to think that was a "decent call", under the time circumstances specifically.

There is only 1 way on earth that this play works. If Usain Bolt is your kicker. That's it. He isn't our kicker......................

Interesting analysis. Never thought of this aspect as I was screaming at the TV

The play call was so bizarre that at the end of the play I was celebrating.

I was thinking now we can take a quick shot at the end zone. Guess my subconscious mind took over during the play, the normal objective being a first down in that situation.

I've never seen an all-or-bust, gotta make the end zone play from the parking lot. Or was it Ankeny? A long ways, anyway.

Wouldn't it be interesting if we could read this thread having gotten 4 more yards of a play that was a long gainer?

Gus doesn't know too much. He just yells a lot. Right before that play he said there was no way Iowa would be throwing the ball.

Only one way?

Really... because we were a few yards and one missed tackle from doing it.

After the game, Ferentz said the coaches saw something that made them believe the fake FG would be successful. It almost was - Koehn was tackled inside the 5 yard line. KF rolled the dice even though the odds were long.

How many thousands of posts have been submitted proclaiming Ferentz to be the most conservative coach in America unwilling to take any risks whatsoever. So KF takes a big gamble, it almost pays off, and suddenly KF is now the dumbest coach in America --even though the same fans have been screaming at the top of their lungs for more risky play calling.

I've come to realize that some fans will dislike Ferentz no matter what he does.

Don't forget they sold all of those 3 game mini-packs for 99 bucks that included both the Iowa and UNI games. I'm sure a tremendous amount of those went to Iowa fans.

I watched Pete Carroll today call timeout with 203 left as the rams were letting the clock run down to 2 minutes. he had a 7 point lead. He gave the Rams a free play. Then I watched him start OT with an onside kick> This after Seattle's kicker had kicked every ball into the back of the endzone. Wasn't like a big return was coming so everybody had to run back to block. Gave the rams 30 yards of field position.

Maybe we can hire him when Seattle fires him this week.

You just love complaining and hats off to you brother, you are good at it.

The fake field goal was an incredibly dumb call. Had trouble scoring in the first half, Koehn just made a 50 yard fg, & horrible odds of that being successful. We needed 3 points there.

No we didn't need 3 points there. Sorry but you guys love hind sight so much allow me to throw some back your way. Game thread said that was stupid and demoralizing to the players. They seemed pretty damned inspired in the 2nd half so to say we NEEDED 3 points there was as you say "incredibly dumb."

Sorry we won, you are wrong. That's how this works right? :)

They took a risk. To much drama from some fans. Second guessing is easy isn't it after the results are known.

Rhode's was so inspired at the half, pumping his fists that I think he forgot to talk to his team at half time.:)
