So, in the days gone by, players would come in as freshman and would generally look completely unsuited for college basketball. But, then they would gain maturity, strength and experience, and become a much better player over two/three years.

I'm thinking of guys like Brad Lohaus, Kent Hill, maybe a Wade Lookingbill.

Today, it seems like these guys have played so much basketball in their lives that they don't really make the big steps in improvement like they used to. Some of them have have actually come close to their peak once they get on campus.

Has an Iowa player made great strides under Fran? Maybe Dev Marble? Gabe O?

Has Tyler Cook improved a lot since coming to Iowa? Isiah Moss? Dailey seems to be regressing.

Maybe it's just Iowa .....

Thoughts?

there are plenty of kids that improve, you just don't see many wearing black/gold ;)

can't blame fran for his recruiting......who would want to have these guys coaching them? :(

Devyn Marble's ppg - 5.7, 11.5, 15.0, 17.0. All the while his TO% went down and his ORtg went up.

Peter Jok scored 14 points total in conference play as a freshman.

Aaron White went from 11.1 ppg, .279 3pt%, .699 FT% as a freshman to 16.4, .356, .819 as a senior.

As a redshirt soph, Jarrod Uthoff put up 7.6 ppg and was tentative, then was a second team All American.

Gabe Olaseni went from being nearly unplayable to the sixth man of the year.

I agree that most players are essentially the same as freshmen though.

Yep, and there are plenty of others as well. I’m not sure how this belief that Fran never develops anyone and players never get better under him started. I’m assuming it’s because people are upset with him so they are just making stuff up or want to find anything to get mad at him about whether it’s true or not.

Yes, not everyone has improved but that can be said about every coach in college basketball. A lot of it falls on the player as well. They have to have the work ethic and mental toughness. Does anyone not think Wieskamp is going to be better his junior year ciompared to this year?

Developing players is one thing, but you can't teach quickness and our guards are no where quick enough. Just watched KSt and TCU. There were five guards on those teams that would start for us. The fact that Fran thinks he can get by with unathletic guards shows his utter incompetence. I love JBo but Conner, Dailey and Moss should not be playing if Fran could recruit worth a damn.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to pick on Fran, but Iowa is the program I know best.

Regarding Joe W. Of course, he is going to be "better". But, will he take large steps upward? Maybe, but my point was the players these day that show up on P5 rosters are pretty "developed" already. You just don't seem to see as many players going from afterthought to big time player, like Jok (mentioned above).

My apologies I wasn’t necessarily targeting you, but just I’ve seen that said a lot lately by a lot of people.

I agree I think these players start so early and play so much that they are very developed when they get to college. I just think for all the things that people want to fault Fran for (and a number of them are true), the “he can’t develop players” criticism is way overblown and lacking in credibility.

I don’t believe Dailey is regressing. It is very hard for him to get in the flow of the games. His minutes are very chopped up and erratic. He has had a few defensive lapses, but for the most part is one of our better defenders. Seems to be the guy who makes one mistake and is jerked. Other players seem to have a longer leash, get more minutes while bringing very little to the party. Read between the lines all you want as to who that might be. Also, the guy has had an incredible number of 3s this season halfway done and then out.

it's not just physical talent, they just seem to play like fools too often.

kf doesn't get the most elite players either(well usually), but you better work hard and play smart if you want to see the field!

Here you go my stat challenged friend. Chronicle Basabe improvement please.
Wow. Is English your second language? One player. Again, please enlighten me.[/QUOTE]I thought I pointed out players who showed no improvement, players with a little improvement or players with a lot of improvement. Sorry for your ineptitude....

You listed stats for one, claiming that many also did not improve. One player of all the players who McC has helped. Epic fail!

In post 12, I listed who regressed, who stayed virtually the same and who improved. Which player (s) are you taking issue with? Try harder not to be a little bit*h while you're at it...
How about Woody, Gesell, Oglesby, Cartwright, May, McCabe, Wagner, Cook, Moss, and JBo.

I don't disagree with you with Basabe, but another factor with him is that the team lacked talent when he was a freshman, so there were more scoring opportunities. As the roster improved, his role changed somewhat.

Exactly. And we hadn't seen someone with Basabe's athleticism during the Lick years, so folks got pretty excited seeing his play and potential his freshman year. Expectations increased for his 2nd year, but a bulked up Basabe (drawing more defensive attention) didn't match those expectations. He was solid his next two years, but better talent around to share the load
