I recently listened to a podcast with Patrick Mccaffery being interviewed. When the host asked PMac who to look for to make a big jump up next year.
Patrick stated Ahron Ulis, Perkins and KrM.... They all have good bball IQ. Makes sense with Ahron's brother Tyler being a pro. Perkins seems to have some leadership qualities. And KeM & KrM having Kenyon for a dad certainly does not hurt!

All three can play pretty good D. They Just need more experience & minutes for the offense to flow.... And we'll have some minutes available.

PMac was excited for next year's team. They have a chip on their shoulders. They are out to prove themselves, and already working hard at it. That made me pretty excited for next season too!
KeM
Rebraca
PMac
Joe T
JBo

That's a solid starting lineup. Everyone of them will take a step up. Prossibly even JBo, being in his natural position at the 2. I like it....

Then next in:
CMac (assuming the surgeries & rehab go well)
KrM
Ulis
Perkins

That's not a bad first 9. IMHO....
With Sandfort, Mulvey and Josh O being wildcards. I think at least one makes somewhat of an impact and takes some minutes most games.
Side note, Patrick was asked who would win a 3 pt shooting contest between JBo and Austin Ash. He put his money on Ash. Interesting...

Thoughts on next year's lineup??

LOL at JBo andCmac, 2 of the worst defenders and one of who brings zero offensively. Cancel those 2 and I actually can get on board with that team. Next years starters....
JT
JBo
CMc
Keegan
Pmac???

LOL!

Not that I'm doubting that any of this MAY happen, but I'm often interested in WHY people say some of the things they say on this site exactly. You mentioned Perkins has shown leadership qualities. What have you seen in his play that shows that exactly. He often seems a bit disengaged especially on the bench, so I'm interested in why you say that. You also mentioned Ulis and Kris Murray playing good defense. Based on what exactly? Ulis has played a few significant minutes, but Kris especially has played almost zero minutes of any real significance. Are these simply your hopeful thoughts or do you have some inside info? Just curious....

I heard the same interview...very good information about the other players. Patrick is a smart and very personable kid......one key theme (for the doubters) was that a number of those guys have more of an offensive game than they showed this year playing the role they were asked to play.....they will be better with more playing time and the roles that they will fill. This makes sense, it’s logical, as it’s a normal progression when you have young talented players, that spent the year on an experienced team like we had last year...

He talked about Ulis being a taller guard who has shown how talented he is (most likely in practice-since us fans saw him in limited minutes). He mentioned Perkins in the same way.

“Senior” leadership would be for C-Mac and J-Bo to come off the bench if the dudes behind them are better. They need to accept this and help Fran see the light. Because if he plays them both 30+ minutes out the gate it will give us all license to ram our heads against a cement wall.

Have a few more beers....

Filip Rebraca is going to start. No questioning that.

CMac is a big question mark with is multiple surgeries...

Tony looked to direct players when on the court. Whether they were out of position, or needed to make a move.... That looked liked leadership to me, but maybe he was off....

Ulis came in on defensive shuffles that Fran used. If he sucked at defense, he wouldn't have been in.

KrM is just damn good. I have watched hours of his & KeM's tape. They ARE GOOD.... Fran F'd up by not playing him more. Yes, the swing positions were loaded with Joe W, CJF, KeM, etc. Believe. I do. And I know. He'll be a damn good Hawkeye when said & done.

I think people will be shocked next year by how good Kr Murray is. Just look at these highlights.

And then there will a ton of people wondering how much better we could've been in 20-21 if he'd seen more PT.

Starting 5

Kr Murray
Ahron
Tony

We're moving into a brave new world. From Woody & Gabe through TC and on to Luka the Hawks have been a very inside out oriented team for years, like 8 years I think.

No one knows what this team can do. I think it will a far better defensive team. Keegan, Patrick and Joe are a great defensive threesome that cover a lot of court and play get in your space defense. I think Tony is that kind of defender, but has not shown even average shooting or ball handling skills, so he cannot really be on the floor in late game situations.

If Kr Murray is close to as good as Ke Murray (the answer is probably yes) then we really have three guys with somewhat interchangeable skills to play two positions. So really, and you obviously want more depth but not necessarily in the regular line up, we could get by with just those three playing both forward positions most games.

If Jordan shoots more like '19 & '20 that provides one quality scorer. While there are many questions I think we'll have good answers. Leading scorers will be Keegan, Jordan, Filip and Patrick.

My other wild freshman prediction (rise of Joey Labas in football) is Riley. Think he emerges as a great backstop around the basket with everybody eager for more Riley Mulvy at season's end.

I already thought there was a lot of promise for next year, and this makes me feel better. I especially feel good about the 3/4 position (Keegan, Patrick, Kris, Connor, and maybe even Rebraca or Perkins for certain match ups). The keys IMO will be whether JoeT and Ulis step forward and are even more complete PGs than we have had (both ends), and whether Rebraca and the young centers can at least hold their own against top competition, especially playing defense and rebounding. I think both of those things are definitely possible, but we will have to see how it plays out. I agree that JBo should be used more as a situational assassin, but still expect him to average 20 min or so/game. Connor is getting far worse of a knock than he deserves from some of you guys, after playing hurt for much of the season. He is still a very valuable part of the team IMO, as a leader along with JBo. I hope he also gets about 20 mpg., backing up wherever he is needed in a game, except center. Could be a surprisingly fun year.

By most of your threads I already thought you ram your head against the wall every day...JMO

Psycho T has the potential to be a great leader. Fran could've used one of him on every team, as his teams usually have good overall chemistry, but lack leadership within the players.

Tony was always talking while on the floor. Pretty impressive for a freshman. Even more, I recall him, on-the-fly, pushing a teammate into defensive position. Something I can barely ever remember seeing a freshman do. Although a bit erratic, TP made winning plays. The erraticism could somewhat be expected from a player with such few minutes played. But the winning plays were there. He stepped up at crucial moments and played well in his return home games in Indy. And his long-successful high school coach called Tony the best player he'd ever coached. Recency bias and marketing can be expected, as he coached Mike Conley, Jr. not too long ago. But even if Psycho T isn't as good as Conley, his former coaches' comments speak to just how good of a leader and winning player he is.

Ulis and Kris both have successful brothers. Usually a good sign. Is Ahron as quick or as good as Tyler was? No. But a competitive confidence and a good feel for the game? Absolutely. To me, AU has one of the highest floors on the team.

Does Kris have the length and bounce that Keegan possesses'? No. And, I think in time, Keegan proves to be the better shooter. But Kris also has a solid floor. Being the twin of Keegan, son of Kenyon, and named after Street, a good motor can be expected. When it comes to defensive instincts, Keegan has been right up there with Bowen, Kenyon, Acie, and Hansen. To expect plus defensive instincts out of Kris is reasonable. And he's left-handed with guard skills as a high-schooler.

And JBo should have been a gunner off the bench years ago

Keegan does possess more athleticism than Kris (not that Kris isn’t athletic). Kris is a bit better ball-handler, and also has quite a smooth step-back shot.

I’m excited to see all the different lineup possibilities. Joe T is a point guard. Josh Ogundele is a center. Everyone else can play 2-3 positions.

Thoughts on next year's lineup??

It seems we have at least 20 starting line up threads before every season.

Lots of guesses in this thread based on very limited information and sample sizes.

Kenyon Murray has a lot more inside knowledge than any of us, especially on his 2 sons.

We can all guess at the starting 5 and the full 9 or 10 man rotation.

However, I will go with Kenyon Murray's lineup that was discussed in ANOTHER line up thread.

And when someone asked about 2 starters from last year (Connor & JBo) coming off the bench & if Fran would actually NOT START CMac & JBo, Kenyon replied, Why not?? That spoke volumes on what we might be seeing this fall.

Kenyon's Lineup:

Joe T
Kris Murray
PMac
Keegan Murray
Filip

The problem with threads that are waaaaaay too long, is that they are impossible to read. And posts get lost. Who has the time to go through literally hundreds of posts?!?

That noted, this thread was about Patrick's interview and a discussion from that.

Carry on...

Everyone said the Murray twins weren't athletic when we recruited them

Yes, it seemed that most had them pegged as unathletic.

I, personally never bought that the sons of Kenyon Murray were unathletic. Having his instincts certainly helps too. But they are also growing into their bodies ant have worked very hard to transform them and become more athletic.

So it's a little of all of it

I don’t remember that at all. I’d have to see the evidence.

So, what you meant to say was “some” not “everyone.” I can agree with that statement.

I knew they were athletic from watching them play at Prairie. I also knew from Kenyon that both hadn’t reached their full size and a year of prep school would allow them to work on their skills while still ‘growing’ into their bodies. I figured they were going to be very good recruits for the Hawks, from the get-go.

Yes sorry. My point is that most skeptics were wrong because Rivals didn't know them

Yep, so I was a doubter because of the lack of publicity, stars, or basically ANY information about them after they graduated HS.....being just Joe Average Fan I only got my information based on basically whatever I read or saw on here......and frankly I was shocked when, out of the blue, they committed.

Fortunately, everything that I had read or seen and the reaction of a number of others here made their commitment (talking about the actual day it became news) seem like it was a real reach like we were almost desperate for any recruits...and we got these guys.

Now, a year later....wow, I couldn't be more pleased....I can't wait to see the off season improvement of Keegan and the getting to see Kris play extended minutes!

Well it is a good enough line up to be either the starting lineup or the lineup that closes out the games

and it's also clear that he is absolutely fine with Connor and JBo not part of the starting lineup

This guy is pretty solid. The number of references for Built Bar is nauseating but they gotta pay the bills.

My o My....what a bunch of idiots and certainly not everyone but I remember the posts.... a lot of them. Sorry....but you post the crap. You can't trust what you post. It is what it is...just fire away posts stupid.

How bout you become more informed before you post a thought? That would help. Just watch some of the Murry twins tapes and you can see they were incredibly skilled players coming to Iowa and then Keegan gets a chance to validate the tapes (my thoughts) as he was one of the best freshman players in the B1G. Geesh...go figure?

I too watched hours of the Murry twins tapes especially at DME but there are other tapes. I real good practice tape that Kenyon posted knocking down 3s like taking candy from a baby. Tremendous work ethic too. In the tape above, not only does Kris knock down 3s with ease but most impressed with his attitude attacking the rim on offense, getting put-backs, and more importantly, the defensive block plays and his handles are impressive........just like Keegan.

The great thing about the twins....they are freshmen and soon to be sophomores. Enjoy them while you can. Oh, and I liked PMacs interview....all good.
