I'm sometimes kind of slow catching on or understanding the obvious, but the last few years I've kept a points sheet for the top teams, and scored each weight for each team, each round. I now clearly see where the big points are: wrestler earns 7 team pts. for winning quarterfinal match and 7 pts. for winning semifinal match - that's huge! Winning finals is 4 more, but quarters and semis is where it's at.

In consolations, the early rounds earn only .5 pt. for advancement, but the later rounds (Fri. evening and cons. semis on Sat. morning) earn 3.5 for each win --- example is that Boyd from Ok. State lost in quarters, but then won each of his next three cons. matches, earning 3.5 each win (total of 10.5 - that's huge!). On the other hand, Meyer lost first round and dropped to cons., and although he ran off some nice wins early in cons., they were only worth .5 --- if he had won later matches in cons., that would have greatly helped the team. Winning the actual cons. medal round (3rd, 5th, 7th) only earns an extra 1 pt.

Bottom line = to score big points for your team, win quarterfinal and semifinal. If you lose in quarterfinal, win your next 2-3 cons. Quick figuring - if a team has 5 finalists (as PSU does tonight), they've already earned 80 pts (16 x 5) not counting bonus. Next year....Gilman, Clark, Sorensen, Marinelli, Stoll??? (I hope the bull is that good!) = 80 pts. :)

You are correct that quarters and semis in the championship bracket is where one separates the wheat from the chaff team-wise. You are confused a little I think about the backside. The significant scoring only occurs in rd 12 and beyond, and that is due to placement points for placing top 8. Each victory in rd 12 and beyond earns 3.5 points plus bonus until you are wrestling your last bout, which only earns you a point plus bonus.

I'm not confused about the backside, just probably didn't explain it too well, using the two examples - you did a better job. ;) (I've never liked the term R12/rd 12).
