Polasek's influence

I noticed something this last game that I think shows Polasek's influence on our game plan as we did something quite a lot that we normally don't do on offense.

Let me give some background to help understand why I believe this. When we played NDSU, Polasek had his lead blockers (pullers and backs) lead away from the whole the ball carrier was going, to make Jewell chase the lead blockers, creating an unfilled gap that the ball carrier was able to get through many times. I'm assuming Polasek noticed how much Jewell keyed the lead block and basically ran him out of the play numerous times.

If you noticed in the Maryland game, on almost all our inside zone plays, our FB went the opposite way of our RB, drawing a LB with him and creating an unfilled gap which allowed our RB's to almost always get positive yds. since there was no initial defender to shoot or defend the gap. We never broke any long runs on inside zone, but those positive runs (3-6 yds.) added up nicely.

When I saw the FB continually going away from the RB, it made me think of what NDSU did against us, and that Polasek may have a hand in scheming/game planning that. I could be wrong, it's just a theory.

Don't get me wrong, we've used the FB before to seal backside in the past, but how they used the FB last week seamed different than their past tendencies.

I think Iowa has an excellent staff right now, both sides. Hopefully they can hang on to these guys for awhile.

This is my thinking as well. Talking to my brother last summer, I said I was very optimistic about this season and the coaching staff is as big a part as the roster. I think they get along, I think they all have mutual respect and I think that mutual respect fosters collaboration and creativity. We have a solid if not impressive roster with few, if any, weak links. Combine that with a coaching staff that seems to be having fun and the results are fun to watch and, so far, are producing nice results. If we keep this staff together for awhile, I think we'll see Iowa continue to grow and improve.

I am nervous though because there was another time I thought Iowa was poised to make a move as a program (not just a team in one season) and it didn't pan out. No, not 2004 (though it sure looked like it then), this was 2008. That was based more on roster than coaching though, so this may be a more solid reason for optimism.

I would add Doyle to that list.

That's probably true too - I couldn't see him leaving, and from memory he is very well paid for his position.

If anybody else were to leave, I'd think it would be the type of position that many up-and-coming coaches would dream of filling so they could work with KF, BF, and PP.

That QB draw we ran on 3rd and long against MD looked awfully similar to the one NDSU ran on their final drive in 2016. A lot of great minds are building this offense and it’s beginning to show in the multiple ways we can attack a team.
You know, that QB draw was a very good call since no one expected it from Stanley, but can you imagine the Brian OC haters after the game ripping Brian for calling a Stanley Draw had it not worked? LOL

I think having 2 former OCs on the staff helps Brian a ton. There have been a few head scratching play calls this season. But the "brilliant" play calls probably outnumber the bad ones at least 4 to 1. That's a far cry from the GDGD days where it was about even or an inverse ratio.

I'm still hoping for a jailbreak screen to a speedy WR, ala 2002 CJ Jones(C-U-Later). We did a few screen passes to TEs this last week, but haven't pulled the old jailbreak screen out in a long time.

One of the most brilliant calls I remember KOK making was the jailbreak fake back in 2002 after running several jailbreaks throughout the season. Here's an example. I think we ran this play a couple times with similar results that year.

watch the first play for the defense after Wisky has the ball. definite 15 yard targeting and possible ejection......and the ref doesn't even blink!

And I'd be shocked if he would leave in the next 4 years with Dillon on the team. Yes, Dillon could follow him but it would have to be one heck of perfect fit.

This is the game where we knocked both the starting and backup quarterbacks out.

I don’t even think this play was dirty, he led with his shoulder pads to try to get in front of the qb and the qb wasn’t defenseless. But yes, likely an ejection in today’s game.

It was a clean hit by 2002 standards. It was a 15 yard penalty and ejection by 2018 standards. I'm not sorry to see that play go away, to be honest.

I seem to remember Iowa running a jailbreak screen within the last few games. I want to say it was stuffed but I'm not sure.

That Iowa team was extremely physical. Was targeting even a rule back then?

no it wasn't. just was pointing out how that concept has changed how defenders must play. I don't disagree with it, just thought it was interesting.
