Poll invalid without Dr Rockso. (Unclear if he’s an actual physician)

Sammy is also the better musician.

But Dave is a better showman.

Sammy is the better vocalist, musician, and doesn't have the monster ego Dave has.

He just wants to have fun, jam, and not take himself too seriously. That is the reason why at 71 he is still making music and touring. Roth's gimmick faded long ago.

Roth was a showboat but Hagar is the real musician.

Always thought the ultimate burn for David Lee Roth had to be when people embraced the change and even started referring to Van Halen as Van Hagar.

Sammy is a far-better vocalist, and definitely a better musician, overall. Sammy was awesome with Montrose. And, his solo stuff was pretty decent (Three Lock Box). His stint with Van Halen was pretty good too. However, Van Halen was only Van Halen when DLR was the frontman. I saw them the first time when I was 12... Diver Down. I had bought the Pretty Woman 45rpm. My first exposure to them was Women And Children First... I thought "And The Cradle Will Rock"'s opening was a guitar! Sounded like otherworldly! Forever changed me!

David Lee Roth never really "sang" the songs. he sorta spoke them kinda loud with a semi-melodic voice. Eddie and Michael Anthony were the only vocalists who SANG during the songs.

I saw Van Halen touring on their first album opening for Black Sabbath. Van Halen blew Ozzy and the boys away.

Seriously. It was embarrassing.

Fast forward a couple of years and I saw them opening for the Rolling Stones in what was then known as the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando.

Van Halen sucked. They were drunk or stoned or both, and Dave openly complained that they should have been the headliners instead of the Stones.

Really??? GTFO.

I write the following with all due respect to Sammy Hagar lovers out there. And I will never deny that Roth was back then - and still is - not for everybody. They are about as different as two singers and personalities from the same era as can possibly be found that sang in the same band - and both have their "camps".

Van Halen had, maybe tops...1 good to great song with Sammy Hagar, and there are several sappy love songs that are pretty much embarrassing to listen to nowadays knowing they were released under the name "Van Halen".

The guitar work is usually "solid", but it also is propping up a fairly poor lyricist. "Only time will tell if we stand the test of time"...that's pretty deep, Sammy.

So...much...lame...filler.

Van Halen had maybe, oh...15 near to full-on all time great songs and probably 15 other good to great songs with David Lee Roth. There are very few stinker songs in 7 total studio albums, and practically zero filler.

There is no great Van Hagar album. One semi-good one at the very most. There are 4 great Van Halen albums and 2 other damn good ones - including 2 of the 10 best hard rock albums of all time. "Fair Warning" is one of the 5 best hard rock guitar performances of all time, and their debut album effectively end-dated what we thought American hard rock was at the time.

It wiped the slate clean.

There is really no comparison from a rock historical perspective. Van Halen was one of if not the very best American hard rock and roll band ever with David Lee Roth. Van Hagar was Night Ranger with a better guitarist.

Hagar is a better musician and vocalist. but DLR made Van Halen. and the songs VH released with Hagar were much, much worse on average than with Roth.

I've got family going. It should be a good concert. I had to settle for a You Tube video of their concert last Friday at Wolf Trap.

Anybody know where Dave is preforming Saturday?

Hmmm... but Sammy has a body of work that goes beyond his Van Halen years. Montrose's debut album is one of the greatest rock albums of all time. He had a successful solo career.

Dave? "Just a Gigolo" is the only solo "hit" I'm aware of, and he didn't even write it.

Whether you prefer Dave or Sammy you have to give credit to Eddie, Alex, and Michael for pulling Sammy into Van Halen after David's departure. Brilliant move to give the nod to an already established artist with cred. On par with the Eagles adding Walsh.

SPOT ON!! Van Halen with Hagar should have been required to change their name. They turned into a a lame pop rock band and diluted the Van Halen brand.
