For me, News Years is the best holiday. All you're expected to do is party 'til midnight, and then watch 18 hours of bowl games the next day. You don't have to buy anything for anyone, you don't have to go anywhere in particular, you don't have to wear anything special, you don't have to cook any required sort of foods... just enjoy your hangover on the couch while you go into a football coma.

Every day should be New Years Day!

I should have read your post before voting, you make a strong argument for New Year's Eve. However, being in the Midwest, I'll take Independence Day due to the weather, outdoor partying, typically a slow time in my industry.

After years in the restaurant industry, holidays have lost all their magic. I've been out of the business long enough that I no longer hate holidays, but I have no love for any of them.

Thanksgiving. Weather is almost always terrific. Food is fabulous. Great getting together with relatives. No pressure or anxiety about gifts. No financial issues. A reminder to give thanks and assess one's life.

If we had kids, I might opt for Christmas; who knows?

I'm curious about this BubsFinn. Were you a restaurant owner or were you an employee (that was perhaps paid the same regardless of how busy it was)?

I would think as a restaurant owner, holidays would be great; at least to the extent they help the bottom line.

Thanksgiving followed closely by Memorial Day. I love the fellowship, food, football and beer enjoyed over Thanksgiving. Memorial Day for years was spent at the cemetery honoring those that served. I still get choked up every time I hear Taps and as the names of the fallen are read. We spend that weekend now at my sister's cabin with family and enjoy kayaking, fishing, fires and beer together.

Are you serious? I thought Trad made a good case. It might also be the only holiday that's not controversial. Nothing political or overtly religious about it.

The Real Holidays: New Year's Eve/Day, Memorial Day,
4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving.

The Real Holy Days: Good Friday, Easter, Christmas.

Holidays are secular opportunities to celebrate a day off
from work and enjoy family and food.

Holy Days are Christian times to remember the meaning
of Jesus Christ for our lives through His birth, death and
resurrection.

Thanksgiving for me hands down.
•Fanily and friends before/during/after Thursday
•Glutinous
•Awesome food (Desserts, Desserts, Desserts)

Attitudes are contagious Bubs.............you keep those comments to yourself. OK? :D

Solid solid argument Trad. However, I like Thanksgiving for almost the same reason: INCREDIBLE FOOD, no gifts, lots of football, and Thanksgiving works out to be a sure fire 4 day weekend.

dead serious. Do the whole standing in time square thing and then tell me what you think.

Before I moved and had to give up my season tickets, The Hawkeye football home opener. The night before meeting up with friends you haven't seen, it's like Christmas Eve when I was a kid. Then the tailgate the next day, the game. Love it.

Now it's whatever holiday I have off on the rotating schedule.

I haven't made a choice yet

I like New Years Day for the reasons given by the OP. Mine is even better because in modern times, I stay home on New years Eve, get quietly drunk on some fairly nice scotch and try to stay awake to see the Time Square ball drop at 11 pm local. Sometimes I hang in there til midnite but no matter.

My other choice would be Memorial Day - not the day itself but the weekend preceding which for the last 38 years I have spent at the Indy 500. It's just about the only absolute in my life.

Thanksgiving is the Holiday that offers the best food with
Turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce , green beans, and
pumpkin/pecan pie.

Fourth of July is the Holiday that offers the best entertainment
with elaborate fireworks in the sky, parades, and great picnics.

Yes, but unlike other holidays, no one feels obligated to go to a parade, go to a bowl game, or watch a ball drop somewhere.

And unlike Thanksgiving, you're not obligated to go to grandma's house and choke down overcooked turkey.

Everyone celebrates New Years their own way, which is cool.
