Pope Francis has suggested that women threatened with the Zika virus could use artificial contraception, saying there's a clear moral difference between aborting a fetus and preventing a pregnancy.

Francis was asked Wednesday en route home from Mexico if abortion or birth control could be considered a "lesser evil," when confronting the Zika crisis in Brazil, where some babies have been born with abnormally small heads to Zika-infected mothers.

The World Health Organization has declared a global health emergency over the Zika virus and its suspected links to birth defects. The virus has been reported in at least 34 countries, many of them in Central and Latin America. WHO and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have advised pregnant women to consider delaying travel to Zika-infected countries.

The explosion of Zika cases has prompted some governments in Latin America to urge women to avoid getting pregnant and has fueled calls from abortion rights groups to loosen the strict anti-abortion laws in the overwhelmingly Catholic region.

But Francis excluded abortion absolutely from the debate.

"Abortion isn't a lesser evil, it's a crime," he told reporters. "Taking one life to save another, that's what the Mafia does. It's a crime. It's an absolute evil."

Francis, however, drew a parallel to the decision taken by Pope Paul VI in the 1960s to approve giving nuns in Belgian Congo artificial contraception to prevent pregnancies because they were being systematically raped.

Abortion "is an evil in and of itself, but it is not a religious evil at its root, no? It's a human evil," he said. "On the other hand, avoiding pregnancy is not an absolute evil. In certain cases, as in this one (Zika), such as the one I mentioned of Blessed Paul VI, it was clear."

Francis has tended to downplay the fraught moral hand-wringing over sexual ethics that preoccupied his predecessors, John Paul II and Benedict XVI. He has said the church shouldn't be "obsessed" with such issues.

Coming home from Africa last year, Francis similarly dismissed a question about whether condoms could be used in the fight against AIDS. Francis said there were far more pressing issues in Africa, such as poverty and exploitation, to be concerned about and that only when those problems were resolved should questions about condoms and AIDS take center stage.

Francis, history's first Latin American pope, did urge doctors to come up with a vaccine to prevent Zika from spreading. "This needs to be worked on," he said.

Several of Latin America's conservative churchmen have reasserted the church's opposition to both abortion and artificial contraception as more reports of Zika cases and brain-damaged babies emerged.

So if the mother is in danger of losing her life the Pope thinks they should both die or that the mother should take the chance of dying during birth?

Also its not a crime in Italy or the USA to get an abortion (probably is in Vatican City, but it's made up of mostly men who molest children and women who don't have sex so it doesn't apply). Now if he's talking about a handful of countries in Central America, then he's correct that it's illegal there. Hell in Brazil, where this all started indicates abortion is legal if "restricted to cases of maternal life, mental health, health, rape, and/or fetal defects". Zika would be considered a fetal defect. Sounds like the Pope is just using the "it's a crime" hyperbole to help further his agenda.

Also, shouldn't he contact God to get this sorted out? It seems strange to lean on mortal men to help solve a problem like Zika. Technically, this is God's "plan" right. Why try to fight it?

He's speaking as it is morally a crime. A lot of things have not been crimes in the sense that they where illegal where they where taking place but where morally criminal.

Abortion is morally criminal.

Abortion is morally criminal.

I disagree that's what he was saying. He compares it to the mafia. When the mafia took your life it was actually murder. Abortion isn't murder nor is it illegal outside of the countries listed.

Do you believe that the mafia killing someone wasn't an actual crime but just "morally criminal"

He's making a comparison and saying they are not morally different.

I mean seriously you don't think the pope is smart enough to know where abortion is legal and where it's illegal. . . or at least not smart enough to check???

This line of reasoning is way too caught up in semantics. It's not even a defense of abortion either it's a stupid gotcha. . .

I'm just going off the words he used. Nothing more. In my opinion comparing a moral crime (which is an opinion of someone not an actual fact) to an actual crime (being murdered by the mafia) is dishonest. It's hyperbole to further his agenda. It's taking something which is an actual crime and comparing to something that he thinks is a moral crime.

It's similar to someone calling circumcision a crime similar to actual child abuse. Some might think that circumcision is child abuse (not illegal but some might consider it morally wrong). But in reality, throwing a kid down the stairs and circumcising your kid aren't the same thing and not really close. Same as comparing abortion to killings held by the Mafia.

I'd love to see you or the Pope tell a woman who chose to abort a child because of health reasons that they're similar to Al Capone because in your opinion abortion is murder.

Depends on the health reasons. But besides Capone wouldn't be a good comparison as he ordered the deaths of many. But perhaps Casey Anthony would be a better comparison.

There has thus far only been a correlation noted between Zika and microcephaly. And it seems to be limited to Brazil. Other nations with Zika outbreaks are, thus far, seeing no increase in case of the birth defect. I wouldn't be surprised to find out the virus has nothing to do with this.

Depends on the health reasons.

It really doesn't. Most industrialized nations allow it for any health reason as they should

Sorry the Pope didn't clarify his hyperbole. I'm not sure if he meant the Mafia like Al Capone or Mafia like Paul Castellano. Casey Anthony is another terrible comparison. She actually killed her daughter (even though she was found innocent) and was tried for it. Abortion isn't murder no matter how much hyperbole you or the Pope equate it to.

Over the last few days it seems as though people have been questioning whether a certain insecticide being used on the mosquitos may or may not be to blame for the microecephaly.
