No breaking news, sorry. Just a quick analysis of Iowa, Ohio St, Penn State, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, and Arizona State with regard to recruiting for classes of '15, '16, and '17. All rankings are per Flo.

Most top-100 recruits: Iowa (9), Neb/Okla St (7)
Most top-40 recruits: Iowa (5), ASU/Neb/Okla St (4)
Most top-20 recruits: Iowa (4), PSU/Neb (3)
Most top-10 recruits: PSU (3), Iowa/Ohio St/ASU/Neb/Okla St (2)
Most top-5 recruits: Ohio St/ASU (2), Iowa/PSU (1)

This is just a snapshot in time, as there's a lot of recruiting left for class of '17, and a few big names for class of '16. The big questions that will change the results:

Where does #1 ('16) Hall go?
Where does #1 ('17) Lee go?
Where does #10 ('16) White go?
Where does #13 ('16) Colbray go?
Where do the other top guys from class of '17 go? (7 of top 10 not committed)

Iowa's 4 top-20 recruits: #3 ('16) Marinelli; #9 ('15) Kemerer; #17 ('17) Troy; #20 ('17) Mejia
PSU's 3 top-20 recruits: #3 ('15) Joseph; #6 ('16) Suriano; #8 ('16) Manville
Neb's top-20 recruits: #8 ('17) Labriola; #9 ('16) Breske; #11 ('16) Red
Ohio State's 2 top-20 recruits: #5 ('15) Martin; #5 ('16) Pletcher
ASU's 2 top-20 recruits: #1 ('15) Z Valencia; #2 ('15) A Valencia
Okla St's 2 top-20 recruits: #7 ('15) Smith; #10 ('15) Brock

Bottom line, we're holding our own, and I'm happy to see the early start with class of '17.

FLO hasn't updated their commitments in a bit.

You missed Lee (N.) for PSU. #13-2017.

Also, of note is that Lehigh stands at 6 Top 100 guys, with 4 of them top 50 (and that number could be 7/5 relatively quickly). Pretty good recruiting company for them.

They have had some very good classes over the years, but it never seems to all come together

Arizona State also had a top 10 recruit Tanner Hall in the '15 recruiting class i guess you could say. He is wrestling at Hwt this year, he was a #9 recruit in 2011, I think he spent time at OTC and also took a mission trip. Not redshirting and competing this season. Also have Naser coming in at 125/133 who looks to be a stud, considering his Bill Farrell. Next few seasons are going to be very interesting between Iowa/ASU/tOSU/PSU

I count six top 40 recruits in '15, '16 and '17 on the Penn State roster (Joseph, Stout, Jan Johnson, Suriano, Manville, Nick Lee)

But I wonder if this comparison is meaningful anyway. You're not considering the class of '14 even though the members of the class are just beginning their college careers and even though what happened in '14 clearly had an impact on recruiting in '15. Penn State has four top 20 recruits from the class of 2014 (including Jered Cortez), Ohio State has three, Iowa has one. In 2013, Ohio State had two top 20 recruits, Penn State had one, Iowa had none. Of course Iowa went harder in '15, '16 and '17. You're playing catch up. Even if it's true that you've "held your own" in those years, is that good enough?

Top 20 recruits on each team from the five-year recruiting cycle ending in 2017:

Ohio State: 8
Bo Jordan (#1, 2013), Tomasello (#10, 2013), Snyder (#1, 2014), Micah Jordan (#6, 2014), Thomas Haines (#9, 2014), Myles Martin (#4, 2015), KeShawn Hayes (#5, 2015), Pletcher (#5, 2016),

Penn State: 9
Retherford (#3, 2013), Nolf (#4, 2014), Nevills (#5, 2014), Nickal (#7, 2014), Cortez (#12, 2014), Joseph (#5, 2015), Suriano (#6, 2016), Manville (#8, 2016), Nick Lee (#13, 2017)

Iowa: 5
Stoll (#14, 2014), Kemerer (#8, 2015), Marinelli (#3, 2016), Troy (#17, 2017), Mejia (#20, 2017)

If you limit it just to top 10 recruits, it's Ohio State 8, Penn State 7, Iowa 2.

I'm not dancing on your grave. Iowa has great coaching and great tradition. But at some point, if you want to keep winning the race, you have to figure out how to bring in the horses.

I'm one of the loudest voices on this board about our lack of recruiting the very top level of talent. What I'm optimistic about is that it appears to be changing.

True, but just wanted to note that - and actually all of Lehigh's top 50 guys that I noted are either 2016 or 2017 so it may be a a couple of years before we see some results with this crew. I believe they had 1 guy for 2015 also (Cole Walter) but not sure if he was top 50 or just top 100. I think you will see Lehigh on the upswing a bit here.

Lehigh Top 50 per Earl:

2010
18. Frank Cagnina
42. Stephen Dutton

2011
10. Mason Beckman
53. Nathaniel Brown

2012
8. Doug Vollaro
21. Mitch Minotti
25. Randy Cruz
28. Brandon Griffin

2013
46. Darian Cruz

2014
24. Dylan Milonas
54. Scott Parker

2015
28. Jordan Kutler
60. Cole Walter

What I like most about our current recruiting is that the talent is getting spread out with several solid recruiting classes, so there isn't mass exodus of talent on random years that will leave us reeling. This isn't by accident..

The shift I've notice - aside from Morningstar's presence - is Iowa now appears to be going after athletic types. IMO we're better served to get a very athletic kid rated #70 than a more polished #35 that is peaking. Other schools have been beating us to the punch in this area.

At any rate, I think we are on the right track and soon we're going to be big trouble for the rest of the country.

Not sure if you were going off memory, but it seems like you missed a few.

The ones others mentioned, and #10 Benick and #13 Shields for ASU.

I like where we are headed.
I also like the new leadership of the current Hawkeye and have high expectations for future leaders like Kemerer and Marinelli,

I got class of '15 rankings from Flo's senior class rankings, week of Apr 22, 2015, which was the final ranking of that class. Flo had Benick @ #21, Shields @ #29, Stout @ #59. (D1CW lists them as #10, #13, and #35, respectively--and perhaps more accurately.) Johnson is listed in the footnotes among "football players that would have made the list."

I missed Nick Lee (#13 class of 2017 from latest rankings--Oct 8), as Flo doesn't show him as committed to PSU and it didn't catch my eye.

Whether some wrestlers were overlooked or just differently ranked, this analysis should be taken directionally, as there are too many moving parts to make a precise claim. My BROAD claim is that I think the Hawks are recruiting more top guys recently, which I am happy about.

I like it Tarp and everyone can see the direction Iowa is heading. There was a lot of money tied up w latest batch of seniors that hamstrung us for a few years.

That's why this year is so important. We need top ten p4p for the future while we have the money.

I like our guys, and we're not done yet.

We're not done yet? Other than Hall (who isn't coming) and Lee for next year who else can we get? Honestly asking your opinion bc I don't know.

No idea. I'm never positive on recruiting. I was just giving my best attempt for once before I had too many beers. I've been giving my negative view on here for months, including last night were I said we are recruiting for hopefully second or third without having enough guys to get us big points, I decided to switch it up.... and lie.

Hall will be announcing he's a Hawkeye this Saturday. I'm sure of it.

Go to the Apple Valley recruit thread that I bumped up for you. go to bottom of 1st page to LaxHawk174 post. Then let me know what you think
