Potable Water

Why do people pronounce this as though it's water you are able to put in a pot? I just heard a news anchor pronounce it that way. And have heard that a bunch lately.

No doubt that will become an acceptable pronunciation before long, if it hasn't already.
 
I have a friend who pronounces the "o" in "produce" the same way... He grew up in NY, but I'm not sure that matters here.
 
British English does this type of thing a lot, but I don't have a list of words. I just remember it from when I lived in London.
 
Still better than people that think it's portable water, like easy to carry.
Ha. To them it's a synonym for bottled water, I guess. So when there's a news alert that there's a shortage of potable water, they think the grocery stores are running out of bottled water to sell. "Oh, those poor people in India, they can't buy bottled water."
