I guess I don't see McDonald's or potbelly as northern food because of where they were started.

Potbelly until recently was a relatively small regional chain and is only now starting to venture outside of the North. It has very little penetration in the northern fringe of the Southern market. Since I've never seen a Potbelly anywhere but in the North, I naturally think of it as a Northen food. I used to always get it when in Chicago.

McDonald's are everywhere. Until recently In and Out was only out west, so I consider that western.
