Too much coffee and not enough motivation to get the work day started, so here goes...
Starting 5: Fran has stuck with the same guys since the first game and talks about their experience and leadership. Not sure I am sold on the latter given performances in late games and the recurring theme of getting outrebounded. After 4 years, Woodbury should have a post game or a go to move, but he doesn't. Unless he gets buckets off the screen and roll, he is relegated to getting fouled and making free throws to score. (To his credit he is shooting 84% I believe).
Bench: Baer's emergence has been impressive to say the least. Uhl has had some good moments and seems to be gaining confidence. Ellingson has knocked down some shots, but struggles defensively at times. Wagner needs a lunch box and hard hat because the dude just works the glass when he comes in. Flemming and Williams appear to be odd men out in the rotation for this season.
My 0-0 coaching record and career intramural / YMCA hacker league player would like to see Uhl in the starting lineup in place of Woodbury or Clemmons. Unlikely Woodbury doesn't start, so maybe Clemmons is more realistic. Uhl is not Aaron White, but his skill set is similar and he is a better shooter. He is capable of playing above the rim on both ends and can protect Uthoff from fouls helping out / trying to block shots. Uhl, with more PT, is capable of scoring 10 ppg IMO.
Bringing Clemmons off the bench for the first half at least will give MG some rest and IMO, allow Clemmons to be more aggressive. The dude has improved his game and shows flashes, but tends to defer to MG and hang on the perimeter in the 2 role. Mix some bench guys in with starters and let this unit push tempo, apply some half court pressure, etc. I would like to see Wagner run the floor and push his defender to match his energy. Figure out who is hot and who isn't and go with that group more heavily in the second half.
Just some caffeinated ramblings for a Monday morning.
