Too much coffee and not enough motivation to get the work day started, so here goes...

Starting 5: Fran has stuck with the same guys since the first game and talks about their experience and leadership. Not sure I am sold on the latter given performances in late games and the recurring theme of getting outrebounded. After 4 years, Woodbury should have a post game or a go to move, but he doesn't. Unless he gets buckets off the screen and roll, he is relegated to getting fouled and making free throws to score. (To his credit he is shooting 84% I believe).

Bench: Baer's emergence has been impressive to say the least. Uhl has had some good moments and seems to be gaining confidence. Ellingson has knocked down some shots, but struggles defensively at times. Wagner needs a lunch box and hard hat because the dude just works the glass when he comes in. Flemming and Williams appear to be odd men out in the rotation for this season.

My 0-0 coaching record and career intramural / YMCA hacker league player would like to see Uhl in the starting lineup in place of Woodbury or Clemmons. Unlikely Woodbury doesn't start, so maybe Clemmons is more realistic. Uhl is not Aaron White, but his skill set is similar and he is a better shooter. He is capable of playing above the rim on both ends and can protect Uthoff from fouls helping out / trying to block shots. Uhl, with more PT, is capable of scoring 10 ppg IMO.

Bringing Clemmons off the bench for the first half at least will give MG some rest and IMO, allow Clemmons to be more aggressive. The dude has improved his game and shows flashes, but tends to defer to MG and hang on the perimeter in the 2 role. Mix some bench guys in with starters and let this unit push tempo, apply some half court pressure, etc. I would like to see Wagner run the floor and push his defender to match his energy. Figure out who is hot and who isn't and go with that group more heavily in the second half.

Just some caffeinated ramblings for a Monday morning.

Thanks for the thoughts.

I'll add my 0-1 lifetime record (I'm pretty sure during my college days I somehow forfeited a game, but my memory is hazy regarding those years. I just know I woke up one day pretty sure my team and I had been booted out of a gym for drunk and disorderly, or was that a bar?)

Anyway. I know he is coming off a hot game but Baer has played well all nonconference. I'd like to see him slip into the three spot and move Jok down to the two in our last nonconference game. I don't care about who starts, the change can be after the first whistle. I like the added rebounding, and I've been impressed enough with Baer's help in keeping the offense flowing to trust that sitting Clemmons won't put too much on Mike. So the odd guy out here as far as playing time might be Ellingson.

That's the only change I'd make. We need Woody, we're going to be seeing the bigs very soon and that's what he's for.

Woodbury's PT, I suspect, will be determined by matchups. He is a solid defender against traditional post players who want to establish position on the block. Teams who go small or have more versatile post players are not good matchups for him on either end.

Outside of 3-4 teams, I think the conference is evenly matched with games coming down to a few critical possessions late in games. I like the athleticism of Uhl and Baer because they can affect so many aspects of the game.

Agree on Wagner. He isn't flashy down low, but has a good base and can use his body to get his shot up. Granted, this was against lesser competition, but someone at his size with his speed can stretch a defense if we can get rebounds to start the transition game.

I agree with you all. I think we need to move Clemmons to the bench. Slide Jok to the 2.
Now we have 120 minutes for Uthoff, Uhl, Baer, Woody & Wagner.
Uthoff 35
Uhl 25
Baer 25
Woody 25
Wagner 10
I would also like to see Christian Williams to get some playing time.
Gesell shouldn't play anymore than 25 minutes. Clemmons no more than 15.
If these two are struggling get CW in there.
Jok, Ellingson split the minutes at the 2. If their struggling, throw in Flemming and see what he can do.
We have a lot of options, Fran will go with the hot hand.
I really like this team. Very unselfish & lots of shooters.

Your bias is showing again. I wouldn't hold my breath that Mike and Sapp are going to play reduced minutes, unless purple is your color.

I am concerned about rebounding, but I don't think that reducing Mike and Sapp's minutes is going to solve that. I think the bench players (Baer, Uhl, Ellingson, and Wagner) have played pretty well. I don't see Williams and Fleming getting many minutes, unless we have foul trouble or injuries. Minutes will depend on match ups and game situations, but I expect averages to be about:

Uthoff 34 min
Gesell 30 min
Woody 25 min
Sapp 25 min
Jok 25 min
Baer 20 min
Uhl 20 min
Ellingson 12 min
Wagner 9 min

One thing I like about Fran is that he isn't afraid to stick with the hot hand regardless of who it is or who sits as a result. He commented after the ISU game that guys got fatigued and he should have used the bench more in the second half. I appreciate his candor and hope he gets more comfortable with the reserves as the season progresses. We need to have a passing of the torch so to speak from the seniors to the underclassmen so they can help the new guys acclimate. While not playing this year, Hutton and Moss will help in this department as well.

Fran missed the boat in last year's recruiting. He should have found a legitimate BIG 4. Next year, there will be no 5 IMO with one scholly to give unless there are some quick transfers.

I'm not particularly fond of having MG and AC on the court together. Maybe occasionally, but give one of them at a time out there running the show is better. That allows Uhl to start and get more minutes at the 4. Slide him to the 5 if there's a smaller line-up and/or Woodbury foul trouble.
Any offensive production from Wagner is gravy. He is a battler in the paint. Rebound and play defense. He's a guy that Fran should encourage to play hard nosed and not worry about fouling out.
Uthoff's job is to shoot and score any way he can. The less work he has to do on defense the better.
I hope Williams gets some time at the point. Needs to learn under fire for next year.

Wasn't for lack of trying. I think there were 4 or 5 power forward types being recruited, but he didn't land any of them. I think Wagner will be a solid 4 with his athleticism and strength.

I think Uhl is struggling with shot selection. He seems to stop and process the situation at times vs. being decisive. One shot he barely grazes the rim and then he drains the next 2. I like him attacking the basket and he seems to be gaining confidence in that area, but his shots aren't falling. He seems to recognize when to stop and shoot vs. driving in too far and getting into trouble. He is impressive on the glass when he rises above everyone else on the floor to grab boards...so hopefully more PT = more confidence.

I agree with those who question playing Mike and Sapp together. In some matchups, that might be OK, but I think the offense runs smoother and the rebounding is better with only one PG on the floor at a time. Mike and Sapp are both quality guys, but they need to spend less time on the floor together.
