Michael Kemerer to Have Season-Ending Surgery

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa junior Michael Kemerer is scheduled to have surgery this week and will miss the 2018-19 NCAA wrestling season. The announcement came Tuesday from head coach Tom Brands.

“We always do what’s best for our athletes and this is what is best for Kemerer,” Brands said. “He is as good a wrestler as there is in the country, and that is a credit to him doing things the right way. I know he is driven to come back even stronger and we will do everything we can to help him along the way.”

“I’m disappointed I won’t be on the mat with my teammates this season, but I am 100 percent committed to my rehab and recovery so I can return to the mat in 2019,” Kemerer said. “I have complete faith in my teammates, coaches, and medical staff, and they have faith in me. I will continue to give them all the very best that I have, on and off the mat.”

Kemerer is a two-time All-American from Murrysville, Pennsylvania. He placed third as a redshirt freshman and fourth as a sophomore at the NCAA Championships. He has a career record of 60-6, competing at 157 pounds in 2017 and 2018. He was projected to be Iowa’s starting 174-pounder in 2019.

Kemerer has not competed this season. He will seek a medical hardship waiver at the end of the season.

Iowa hosts Iowa State on Saturday at 2 p.m. (CT) in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

Sucks for Kemerer.

I posted regarding Bowman to 174 in the ISU thread earlier but deleted because I didn’t want start a rumor. it was far from reliable info. He is on the way down. Weighed in at 182.5 last week and will likely be down to weight by Midlands if everything goes well.

so he did certify at 74, damn he was 182.5 and beat Brunner at 197. Nice job him. Guess that probably means we will see more of Corbin til Warner is ready

Is there an exact weight certification anymore? In the official rules and weight regulations the only thing that I saw was the 1.5lbs weight cut per week. Depending on what he's been hitting the scales at he could. if his body allows it that is

Am I right on this or no?

Silver lining.... Kem is almost a shoe in for a medical. He comes back bigger and stronger than ever and is in the line up an extra year with Lee and Co.

I have zero doubt that he will thrive from this. Mike will attack this like he does everything else in life and come back better than ever.

Saw Kemmerer on the 2nd floor of UIHC yesterday and thought something not so great might be happening. I'm sad to see that my instincts were correct...

if i did my math right and i probably didn't, Bowman could wrestle 174 after the new year. That is if his body allows it.

S***balls......Hate that it happened, but glad to see everyone is on the same page to heal him fully before putting him out there. I think Bowman would be a nice fill-in (he is listed as 174 on the webpage, but Kem is listed as 157 as well), but anyone else? Myles Wilson? Jeremiah Moody? Brody Grothus? I think his chances of a Medical should be good, given the precedents that have come before him.

I know you weren't the only one, but the casual Grothus drop in here made me chuckle. thanks for the laugh!

Definitely sucks but could be good in the long run. Winning it all this year was a tall order. I'm more concerned about some of the other guys.

Anybody know how many matches one can wrestle in a season and still get a medical?

Kem will for sure get a medical for this. The NCAA is handing out medicals like Halloween candy these days. Kem situation is the same as Ashnault he missed the whole year because of surgery and got the year back
