Progress, one game at a time: 10-3 or 9-4?

The Iowa Hawkeyes play their final game of the 2019 season in less than two weeks.

Iowa QB Nate Stanley will not conclude his final season as Dree Brees did in 2000. No third straight 25 TD passes and no Big Ten title, but Nate the Great has brought the Hawkeyes some memorable games and wins.

Like Ricky Stanzi, three straight bowl wins is clearly an achievement Iowa can finish his career on. It would be sweet, with the first win over USC in my lifetime.

Unless you were listening to the radio in 1961, you likely haven't experienced a win in California by Iowa over USC.

Iowa is 2-3 against USC in California over the years.

Never in the Holiday Bowl, where Pac Ten teams struggle to win 3 out of 10 played. The Big Ten has found success in the past in San Diego. Iowa is 2-0-1 there with all games going down to the wire.

Our last win over USC was 35-34. The Trojans came up short on the final two point conversion.

How will Iowa's three all-Americans play in San Diego?

A look ahead to 2020, bowl prep is always important. Iowa will have a new signal caller. Does Iowa have have a poor man's Tee Martin to make that next step forward, building on the progress from 2017 to 2019?

"You obviously want a guy who’s a competitor, who just loves to play football, can’t live without it. That’s the No. 1 quality you want (in a quarterback),” Iowa quarterbacks coach Ken O’Keefe said before the season. “I can tell that with Spencer right away. He’s another guy who can’t get enough of it. If you let him, he’ll show up at your house on off days asking you questions about things. He loves to compete and loves being out there and just loves playing. I can’t see him not being involved in the sport somehow, someway. That’s how much he loves it.”

Two weeks from today, that conversation is clearly on the minds of all, in Hawkeyedom. The 2019 season will be officially in the books and all sites turn to 2020.

Looking forward to the Holiday Bowl, then the New Year of 2020 for the Iowa Hawkeyes, which will hopefully be special in a variety of ways.
