Proposed NCAA Wrestling Changes

The article also discusses adding women's wrestling as an NCAA sport. That would be great to help combat Title IX impacts.

Big 12 commissioner Bowlsby is a leader on these initiatives. Would be great to gain some momentum and add more programs in areas like Texas and the SEC.

Not to mention California.

Absolutely! I mentioned Texas because it's a Big 12 school, and the SEC because they haves Texas ties now. My hope is that schools will add both men & women's programs.

Probably too hopeful with this wish, but maybe they can convince the NCAA to allow a reasonable number of scholarships too! 15 is a good number divisible by 5.

I think moving the season makes a lot of sense. It's too long, spans 2 semesters, and directly competes with march madness.

So basically a 1 semester sport. What would be the Universities advantages besides grades?

Makes sense for Texas to get women's wrestling as it is state sanctioned in high school with maybe 2000 girls wrestling.

By my calculations, the ideal number of D1 men's wrestling scholarships would then be 14.59234.

How would the schedule shift impact international wrestling? Would Cox be an Olympian if this schedule was in place? Would Burroughs still have won a world championship his senior year? What about Snyder last year? We are seeing international success with younger wrestlers and this could continue to be a trend. I would hate to see a schedule change make it nearly impossible for wrestlers to do both.

Could the schedule be shifted up month?

For purely selfish reasons I don't want the season shortened. Early open tournaments give a great gauge of what new young wrestlers are going to be good and then you get the build up to Vegas, midlands and the scuffle before the conference scheduled begin. I understand the logistics to possibly keep wrestlers healthier and possibly avoid conflicting with bball(although that conflict is why we get great ESPN coverage because they don't have the bball rights). Still, the current schedule is about as good for a wrestling fan as it can get!

It has been pointed out on BWI that if you look at the color coded calendar in the 5 year plan, it has a championship weekend two weeks prior to conference tourneys. That means the NWCA is trying to slip a dual championship past us in a larger document. I knew they couldn't help themselves.

Would this new schedule conflict with the lacrosse championships? If so, we might lose the gains in ESPN coverage, as they are wanting to push that sport.

Some interesting things in this report:
1. Incoming wrestlers are academically in top half of student athletes coming in but perform in the bottom half. Makes you wonder why.

2. Report says they want to establish the critical first semester but it is the third highest sport for redshirts. I assume most would be freshmen year so sort of conflicts with the need for establishing the first semester of college.

3. Highest use of pain meds, amphetamines, 2nd highest ADHD, and higher risk for diuretics. The scariest thing is these are all prescription meds. Who is supplying them?

4. Also a highest risk of concussion. I can't think of a single time I have seen a match stopped for a concussion or fear of a concussion. Must be under diagnosed during matches or occur a lot in practice.

As to your first item, the report alluded to the fact that athlete time involved in wrestling is near the top of all sports. That could be why they are falling off academically.

Yep. The NWCA is at it again.

This needs to happen ASAP
!

i doubt it happens until 2019. 2017 st louis and 2018 cleveland are already scheduled so i would think the change cant take place until after that. i was talking with a friend about it last night and he said he read a quote from tom ryan that the change could take place in 2019 , sorry no link i didnt read it.

I had trouble reading your post. What did it say again??

Two thoughts::
1. No more Grapples on the Gridiron. I know we captured lightning in a bottle last year with evening football, great weather, OK State being willing for an early dual, etc. and can't count such good fortune in the future. But this completely takes another one off the table.
2. Does this matter at all in terms of wear on the athletes? Would more condensed season make it easier or harder for the big weight cutters? Less time for injuries to heal before qualifying tourney and NCAAs (or does shorter season mean less chance of injury to begin with?)

Injuries are a crapshoot. The Grapple on the Gridiron type events would just have to be held in Oklahoma, Arizona, California, etc. Northern schools would be SOL (wouldn't be the same in a Dome). But since it's only happened once in the history of the sport, probably not too many people concerned about how often it occurs (It was awesome however!).

Depending on how strict they make teams stick to scheduling duals during the "Dual meet season", you could potentially schedule a Gridiron type event in late march and expect similar weather as you would in early November.

Moving the NCAA's away from March madness may also open up the possibility of new cities/arenas as hosts who would otherwise be booked for basketball.

There shouldn't be a conflict there. The proposed wrestling schedule would end around mid-April (April 13-15) on the provided calendar. The NCAA lacrosse championship is over Memorial Day weekend. Mid-April is a pretty quiet time on the sports calendar -- there isn't much going on beyond early season baseball.
