Woody posts his SECOND double-double of the season tonight: 11pts, 10rb to go with 5/5 from the line. He's averaging about 10 pts/7 1/2 boards a game now and shooting (get this) 80% from the FT line!!! And this is not against low competition. He's definitely stepping up for his senior season so far!

Some of his weaknesses were apparent tonight at times, but his strengths were also on display and were key to grabbing the W. He is an important piece to this team and they're better for having him.

Yup.....Woody has gotten stronger this year.....he's just been playing smarter and has been huge this year......

Woodbury has been a breath of fresh air w/ his new low post moves, consistent shooting and improved accuracy from the stripe. He's not quite having a Les Jepsen senior season but he's having his best and I think he'll get even better.

Woody made some huge plays down the stretch. Only knock might be that he needs to do a better job of controlling the defensive backboard. He might now be our most reliable free throw shooter down the stretch.

Yep. Woody is playing quality minutes. Making FTs. Timely RBs. Dependable. What you expect from a quality Sr.

The pass to Jok, although unnecessarily late since he could have given it up for a layup earlier, was surprisingly tricky and nice.

I love Woodbury, he's limited athletically but he plays as hard, as smart and as unselfishly as any hawkeye ever has.

If every player played with his mindset you would almost never lose.

He's has a great combination of no ego and pure toughness.

Yet the first bad game he has the Woody bashers will be out in force.

This was one heck of a hard fought win tonight, I'm very happy with the team. It would have been better if our shots were falling, but sometimes you just have to dig deep and do other things.

He has been very efficient this year. We need him to stay healthy. He is a vital piece to the team for us to do well in the big ten.

I'm sorry, but this 100% not his fault. Woody cannot get rebounds outside of his area like a Reggie Evans. He is locking down his spot by the hoop like A MAN; his teammates, however, are not contributing. Jarrod, Uhl and the guards have to get in there. We have to be a scrappy team on the boards this year: I am just not sure if a team with Jok, Jarrod, Mike, Dom, and Brady can be overly scrappy.

I don't disagree about rebounding by committee, but Woody is near the basket more than anyone on defense. He needs to box off one side of the basket and get those that come to that side of the basket.

Uhl did a better job on the boards last night. We miss White and Gabe finishing defensive possessions with a board.

Just checked the stats today and Woody is now averaging 82% from the FT line. The shocking thing?: that's slightly better than Uthoff with MORE attempts by Woody. That's great for Woody and the team that he's doing well there. But it brings up another point:
Uthoff needs to get to the foul line more! Every good team we face will limit him below his current average if he doesn't. This is correctable as it just means he needs to be more aggressive to the hoop. This could also help our offensive rebounding by getting an opposing D out of position.

I absolutely love the positive comments on this thread. 100 times better than all the negativity that usually takes place. I know it's a forum but wow can we beat some people up on this thing.
Great job Woody and keep it going. Go Hawks!!

Another prop to Woody. He is now tied for 3rd in the B1G for offensive rebounds at 2.9 per game. He's also 6th in the league for overall rebounding at 7.6 per game, 4th in FG% at 62.2%, and (believe it or not) 11th in FT% at 82.1%.

Other Hawkeye individual high stat marks in the B1G include:
Uthoff 3rd in scoring at 17.7 and 2nd in blocked shots at 2.6.
Gesell 2nd in assists at 7 per game and 6th in steals at 1.6.

I feel comfortable with Woody stepping to the line in crucial situations

I feel more comfortable with him than Mike. That kid is solid for 39 minutes, but not sure the ball should be in his hands the last 60 seconds. Yes, I recall the UNC game last year but that seems to be the exception. I am in no way a hater on Mikey, but he has not been clutch from the line in his years at Iowa

Didn't Woody start last year shooting around 70%. Then gradually went back down to 60 or below. Maybe I am off, but not sure. Anyway I love Woody and hope he can keep it going.

Woody stayed out of foul trouble, pretty much got the only rebounds we got all nite and made his free throws, a very good game for the man. He is a key to our season but pretty much all the starters are key. Mike shooting free throws just looks terrrible, can't figure it out. We are going to need the whole team to show up and get more rebounds, I thought we stole that game last nite.

I think Woody struggles against the good, athletic bigs, but is pretty solid against everyone else. Would love to see them doing more screen and rolls like they ran in the ND game. I'd also like to see them feed him the ball more and run the offensive through him more than they do. He's probably the 2nd best passer on the team next to MG. If they collapse on him he can pass the ball out to an open shooter. The biggest thing he needs to do is stay out of foul trouble (especially the dumb fouls). The team is not near as strong if he's not on the court.

FSU is about as athletic as it gets on the college level. I think Woody has struggled vs quickness in the past, but he's gotten better at that as he's learned to understand his strengths and weaknesses. I agree that it's important for him to stay out of foul trouble and we need him on the court as much as possible. But I was encouraged by how well we did with Uhl subbing for him. If Woody stays consistent, I think we will run more O through him. He's starting to show the toughness factor we've missed with White graduating.

I'll admit that I've been over the top after some losses and esp. hard on Woodbury (like when he gets blocked by a 6 footer, misses bunnies, and lets himself get blocked by the rim because he can't jump) but have reminded myself that he's a young man who has limitations and that I just need to appreciate what he does bring. He could've went to UNC but he chose Iowa so I love him for that. Woodbury has become a rock for this team and I'm glad to have him.

I do hand it to Woodbury. When I saw him in high school he shot nearly 50% from the FT line and was a clear burden in the last few minutes of any close game.

Every player has a limitation to a certain extent. For the most part Woodbury has understood his role on the team from day 1, which not all college players get.

Just having some fun here. :) Considering the way Woody is playing this year maybe we should have redshirted him his freshman year?
