Pryce reveals who his Freshman Roommate will be

Attention hound. Inflated ego move. We need him, but if we miss out now it will be much easier to take.
In the world of NIL, the more attention (and followers) may very well equal more money. Simply building a brand in my view, and why not with the way things are. Hope he picks the Hawks.

You really think a bball program cares about anything but what you offer on the court? Doubtful

I posted this in another thread--but the reason JP delayed the announcement to September is because his AAU coach is out of the country on vacation until September and he really wants him to be present for his moment. There's a logical explanation.

He has the right to announce when he is ready. No drama from his perspective. Thanks for the info.

Good kid and great talent - a lot of upside still remaining.

He would kill in Fran's system given his current skill set. And if he's willing to work on his body and Garza's expanded skill set, then the NBA will come calling.

Fran's system would highlight his skills better than most any college program, and Fran knows how to use the 4's and 5's in all 5 areas (low block, mid post, high post, perimeter, fast break) and that is why Garza was National POY. Other schools have no clue how to fully use posts/power forwards to their full extent because their schemes don't get them the ball in the right spots and free them up to score from those spots.

Watch Garza's tape and tell me how many college programs have a system that would get him all those different touches he was getting.....

Eh, I try to assume the best in someone before immediately jumping to "attention hound, etc". Maybe he sincerely likes all 3 schools in the race and really wants time to process everything before jumping into a huge life decision? I'd much rather him make the right decision to start rather than rushing it and then jumping in the portal after 1 year. He's a 17 year old kid--let's cut the guy some slack.
If he’s acknowledging the coaches I hope he’s communicated the fact they aren’t really in it so they can spend their time focusing on kids who might want to come. IMO the countdown clock was an immature move to draw attention. It sounds like his parents will play a big role. Did they even make the trip to Iowa? He seems to have the basketball talent we really need, but so far I see him as a game player and I’m hoping to be surprised and he picks the good guys. I had plenty of growing up to do at 17 and I’m sure he won’t look back at this as his finest hour.

Good story from the Portland (Maine) Press Herald.

JP wanted to have his college decision made before he started his senior year. Mission accomplished.

Sep 2: College decision date (his AAU coach is back from Greece vacation, so he he can take part)
Sep 3: He turns 18 years old
Sep 4: Move in date at Brewster Academy

The Story:

Boys’ basketball: JP Estrella will make his college choice known Sept. 2

The 6-foot-11 center/forward from South Portland has taken official visits to Marquette, Tennessee, Iowa and Syracuse, and received scholarship offers from Duke and Kansas.

JP Estrella hasn’t made up his mind about which high-level college basketball program will get his verbal commitment.

But the 6-foot-11, 210-pound center/power forward who led South Portland to the 2022 Class AA state title is sure of two things.

He’ll announce his choice on Friday, Sept. 2. And whichever team wins the recruiting battle will have passed the Estrella family chemistry test.

“I’m looking for that homey feel in college and whether you can just feel chemistry on and off the court,” Estrella said. “All of these teams are good because these guys are really tight for each other. The biggest thing for me is having that family environment and being able to hang out with guys every day. And that translates on the court really.”

“Chemistry off the court equates to chemistry on the court,” said Estrella’s mother, Allie (Booth) Estrella, a former Miss Maine Basketball winner who played at Boston College.

As a junior at South Portland, Estrella averaged 20.2 points, 11.8 rebounds and 4.1 blocks in the regular season in an all-state campaign.

Estrella said he set the self-imposed Sept. 2 announcement date because he wanted his decision made before he goes off to prep powerhouse Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, for his senior season, and his Middlesex Magic club coach Mike Crotty will have returned from vacation in Greece. He will turn 18 on Sept. 3 and move in day at Brewster is Sept. 4.

Estrella is part of an unprecedented wave of boys’ basketball players from Maine who have, or will, receive top-tier Division I college scholarships, albeit after transferring out-of-state to finish their high school careers. Dom Campbell (Waynflete/Phillips Exeter Academy) will be a freshman this fall at Notre Dame. Cooper Flagg, and his twin brother, Ace, will be sophomores at Monteverde Academy in Florida after leading Nokomis to the state title. Cooper Flagg has already been offered scholarships by the UCLA, Michigan and Duke and starred on the USA U17 national team this summer as a 15-year-old.

“Me and Cooper are pretty close,” Estrella said. “We both ball around with each other and we’re both doing big things for Maine and we’re showing out for our state which is just awesome to do.”

Over the summer, Estrella has made official visits to – in order – Marquette, Tennessee, Iowa and Syracuse, and seen his name climb national recruiting ranking lists from the 150 range into a consensus top-60 Class of 2023 player. Duke and Kansas joined the list of 20-plus Division I programs (including Maine) to offer a scholarship.

While Kansas is still potentially in the mix, Estrella said he does not plan to make any more official visits. He canceled a planned visit to Duke. Saying no to the Blue Devils was a basketball-development decision.

“I was going to visit Duke right after Iowa but I just think they’re really deep at my position and I really want to play freshman year,” Estrella said, adding, “freshman year is a development year, really. I want to go and be able to play. Those four I’ve visited offer the opportunity.”

Estrella’s announcement will have an old-school feel with a modern social-media component, Estrella said. It will take place at XL Sports World in Saco with friends and family in attendance – “It’s an open invite to everyone,” Estrella said – and be streamed on 247 Sports, a recruiting site that currently has Estrella pegged No. 54 in its 2023 composite ranking, No. 7 among centers. Rivals.com puts Estrella at No. 53, No. 11 as a power forward and On3.com, another site, has Estrella ranked 16th overall and fourth as a power forward.

On Wednesday, Estrella will head to Chicago to take part in the Under Armour Elite 24 game, an outdoor all-star game that will take place off the shores of Lake Michigan and be broadcast on ESPNU (7 p.m.). The national attention is something Estrella could barely imagine when he was a 6-foot-4 freshman who barely played varsity minutes at Scarborough before transferring to South Portland.

“It’s a really humbling thing. Now I have to come in there and dominate and do my things, make some new friends and just keep hooping,” Estrella said.

An outgoing sort, Estrella said he’s enjoyed the recruiting and attendant attention that has escalated sharply after Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim made a surprise scholarship offer last August.

“The process has been awesome, learning about all these schools,” Estrella said. “It’s really been a dream and now my dream of playing at the (Division I) level is going to happen and hopefully I can develop at the DI level and go to the league. That’s the end goal.”

Estrella said he expects to play center and forward in college. This summer he’s focused on improving his perimeter skills, especially ball-handling and 3-point shooting, and on- and off-ball defense.

Ben Teer, 30, a Machias native, has worked with NBA bigs like Julius Randle and Willie Cauley-Stein. For the past year, Estrella has been a weekly trainee.

“He’s going to be a really big get when someone lands him,” Teer said. “It’s just insane how much he can already do and to still have so much more ability to grow into his body. That’s what the college coaches I’ve talked to are all saying.”

Allie Estrella said she doesn’t know which school her son will choose.

“I don’t think there’s a wrong decision to be had here,” Allie Estrella said. “I’ve told JP, you have wonderful options with the places you visited. I feel comfortable with all of them.”

One way to let the coach know he is not interested is to NOT VISIT THE SCHOOL.

I think his parents did come on the Iowa City visit. Everything I have heard points to his Mom really liking how Fran helped develop Luka. That might help tip his decision to our favor. Wonder if Luka is allowed to contact him outside of the quick interaction in I C when Luka was in town for the wedding.

I don't see why he couldn't. He has no official ties to the school.....

If he really still hasn't made up his mind then I'm not as optimistic. I was hoping that he had mostly made up his mind after the Iowa visit. Other schools who are more likely to throw late NIL or other questionable recruiting tactics would seem to have an advantage in these situations. Fran plays it pretty straight up, so I hope the Estrella family appreciates that.

I think he probably has decided. As someone pointed out his coach is out of the country on vacation, and I think he's waiting until his return to announce. He said, family atmosphere and chemistry and he wants to play as a freshman. Certainly Iowa fits the bill for his interests.

Very athletic and long, definitely filled out some. Either lacked stamina or didn't run the court hard unless he saw a chance at a break, could just be the all star format (nobody played defense), but I would still take pride in getting into position because he could have had 10 blocks this game if he wanted to. You know he can hit the 3 from videos so not worried about shooting, just how he moves and what he does without the ball. Offensive rebounding was content to stand behind the defender, probably a poor habit because he has length, but that won't get you offensive rebounds in the B10. You need to anticipate and get inside position - its about working hard, which he (and most everyone else) didn't do much of lol. Just saw the first rotation though, then turned it as I hate that crappy format with no defense, selfish guards, and so forth.

Yes, JP's mom and dad were part of the official visit. Note how Coach Eldridge gets this high up in this picture from JP's official visit.

Let’s hope NIL is not a deciding factor as I imagine Tennessee will put together a massive package.

I still think it's either Syracuse or Iowa. And I like our chances.

JP wants to play right away and his goal is making it to the NBA. Fran can offer both to him.

I know nothing… zero… my “gut” tells me he picks Iowa… he canceled an official to Duke - right after Iowa… he wants to play right away and the biggest thing he also mentions is chemistry with teammates on and off the court. Iowa definitely seems to have that…. Good kids… who’ve been in the program … we aren’t a one-and-done school. We just had a player taken in the Top 5 of the NBA draft … have a probable first-rounder in next year’s draft… the development of Luka … playing in the Big 10 and playing in a high-octaine offense … I feel really good about our chances…

Everything you say Rusty is true but my fear is that Tennessee will come in with a massive NIL package. If true it might be be too hard to turn down. Hope I am wrong.

Iowa will soon be floating in money given the new TV contract the B1G just signed. I think we get 53 million now and some say, that might almost double.

The issue for the time being in college athletics is there is not a straight line between media rights payments to schools and players. Any NIL opportunities will come from the Swarm collective (where everyone gets the same amount, at least that's how it was explained when it launched) or the player gets deals on his own (i.e. a car dealership paying to appear in ads/promotions).

Some of the other schools (or I should clarify, boosters of those schools) have created large, sport-specific NIL collectives that guarantee payment of significant $ to any player on the roster. It doesn't seem to be something that Iowa wants to be involved in. I understand the "win, graduate, do it right" mantra but mostly that sounds pompous and self-serving in today's environment. Never mind that the football coach, basketball coach and AD are all making millions each year off college athletics. We "do it right" here so we can't have a large amount of money going to players via a collective. It is a very mixed missage.
