PSA - wear a mask to support college football

This thread is actually hilarious. You guys realize that masks and shutdowns don’t eliminate a virus? You can flatten a curve sure, which we did, hospitals were never over run. You will not eliminate a virus social distancing and wearing a fing mask. The teams that will have the least issues this fall are the ones that already have had the majority of their players infected. Doesn’t have shit to do with heros on this board.

You're talking sense to the intellectually defenseless. Sadly, prolly not gonna work.

Someone needs to talk to Nico about this. Just saw him downtown with mask around his neck.

Anyone think that this slowing the spread shit is just delaying the inevitable and keeping all the vulnerable people at risk for a much longer period of time than necessary?
Lock up vulnerable, let all the young folks and republicans get it over with, and you will have a lot less people that can spread it around........ Then the rest of y'all can come on out of the house again..
As a bonus for all you flaming libs.....maybe the competition will kill itself off.......Surely you ladies can get behind that, right?

Moving the goal posts. Masks have absolutely nothing to do with the 2.5 million dead being off. It has everything to do with fear porn and flawed statistics. If you think masks saved 2.5 million people you are the dumbest person on this board.
also, why does a state like Illinois have have a death rate 60 per 100k and Iowa is 35 but illinois has a state wide mask mandate and had hard shutdowns? I’ll tell you it has nothing to do with masks.

Mask, social distancing, sanitizing, cancelled public gatherings and remote work/ school all played a part in making this thing less than what it could have been. Also Illinois has a lot more population density than Iowa in certain spots, hence the 60 per 100k, kind of like, oh say all the major cities in the US had at one point. Iowa naturally social distances besides the college towns and even they do not compare to the large metros in the USA.

What is dumb is saying wearing a mask and all the other precautions taken have nothing to do with the 2.5 being off, but in the next post you say it helped to flatten the curve....... DUH that was the point, to avoid the 2.5 million dead. You completely contradict your statement there but I do not expect you to understand that.

What is hilarious is I agree with all of your statements but wear a mask to keep people safe around me.......But I am the intellectually defenseless.

This is so tiresome. COVID was never going to kill 2.5M people in the US this year or next unless the entire country followed the lead of New York and New Jersey in sending sick nursing home patients back into those nursing homes to pick off all the old and sick. The whole premise of this thing is set up so that the pro-lockdown, pro-mask folks can claim victory no matter what. If it's not as bad as feared, "lockdowns worked." If cases rise (a nearly meaningless statistic), we need "more masks and lockdowns."

I am not opposed to masks. If a business, church, school, etc ask me to wear one, I will. If I'm going on a walk outside with no one coming within 20 feet of me, I'm not wearing one. But spare me the lectures about science when as recently as March and April the head of the CDC is out there saying masks don't work against viruses. The Phillippines has had some of the highest mask compliance (> 90%) since early in the pandemic. They are on their second or third round of lockdowns. If masks work, why is that happening?

You bring up the point about Iowa being more naturally socially distanced than Illinois. I would agree with you. Wouldn't it also follow that based on those differences in population density, that the Iowa governor did the right thing by not imposing harsh lockdowns or statewide mask mandates? Pretty much what the data shows us is that the virus is going to make its way through a population. Locking down or closing schools, businesses, etc. may change how fast it goes through, but it will eventually go through a population. Forcing young, healthy people under age 60 to stay at home in perpetuity is not the way a sane society fights this virus. But here we are.

I agree with your post. There is no way for either side to know if 2.5 million was correct. It was predictive data. But with the precautions by the individual state mandates the US is at 190K which I think we can all agree is a victory if there is such a thing at a time like this. Iowa SD and NE were able to do what they did because of their population base. Some of it was stressful but now it looks promising. Other states voted in that leadership. They have all but themselves to blame there. At this time, 6 months into this thing, we know A LOT more about this than we did in March April and May. we know what not to do based on experience. Not sure what Illinois and Minnesota are waiting on to be honest. You can say and highly recommend mask wearing and limit public gatherings and leave it up to the local government.

Wearing a mask is never going to prevent a disease. But it will limit it to an extent. That is honestly where I lie with this thing. I agree with you. I just think it worked with what we do at the beginning more than you do.

I agree with you here Calmhawk. The only bummer for me in Illinois is that Politicians lie to get voted in. As our Govenor did here in Illinois. He continues to be a hypocrit.
In his press conference two days ago when asked about football in Illinois as a possibility later this fall because the Illinois High School Association has proposed to move forward. His response was that "Its fine for other states to endanger their young children and families but we will not do that here in Illinois". Nothing was said about vulnerable or elderly just that if we start football we are endangering the youth and families.
The guy is out of touch with reality. Sorry for posting something political here but it related to football in our state.
Also its ok to allow College and Pro football to continue in Illinois. Ummm, what?

Dude. Social distancing can slow the spread. Covid wasnt going to kill 2.5 million in a year. Ever. At this point, continued social distancing is delaying the inevitable until there’s a vaccine.

You did it again. How do you know it wouldnt have? You have no idea. None of us do!

It may have slowed the spread, but there are two ways you know it didn't have an impact on ultimate number infected or killed:

1. Even the faulty study you cite contains a warning that mitigation efforts would only delay the infections/deaths, not prevent them. This is consistent with what virtually every epidemiologist stated back in March when "flattening the curve"was the goal.

2. You can compare the most stringent and most lax mitigation efforts and see that the most stringest didn't fare any better (arguably worse when you factor in that the most lax largely have the pandemic behind them, while the most stringent continue to see the pandemic rage on)

Take Sweden vs Peru for example. This Spring, Peru was being praised for its stringent policies that barely allowed people out of their houses, and was literally enforced by military in the streets. They actually locked down before NYC even though they had almost no cases at the time, and remained in quarnatine for months. Meanwhile, Sweden was widely panned even though it wasn't Sweden that was "experimenting", but rather everyone else.

Fast forward to the present and Peru recently overtook another strict lockdown country (Belgium) was the highest virus death rate per capita in the world, while Swedencontinues to fall in the rankings, and had a Chief Epidemiologist who says masks are not recommended, even in crowded enclosed spaces like public transportation.

Of course, this doesn't include all the lockdown deaths suffered in the countries with the most strict restrictions, which further widens the gap.

Refering to #1 those numbers were put out before we gained access to studies and treatments for the disease. Now in present day we have those, along with regulations (some more strict than others obviously). Those Drs also suggested that we may have a vaccine and it will take a conscious effort by every American to combat this virus, but 50% of Americans do not do it. Was the prediction overblown? maybe or maybe not. Time and minimizing cases helped us be better prepared for outbreaks and keeping the death toll down.

Again Sweden has since put restrictions for travel and gatherings into place and limit the amount of people in 1 place and has 10-11 million people in their country. Peru has 32 million. What is the socioeconomic situations in both places? There is always way more that goes into this stuff than just the black and white numbers you recklessly pick through without actually thinking. Health care, $$, location on earth, time of year, seasonal differences, age of population. etc. Someday you will be able to think objectively. Today is not it I guess.

The first day the paper was issued, notable scientists like Nobel Laureate Michael LeviItt were begging the uthors to retract. They knew it was faulty, and more importantly knew it would likely be used to exploit the intellectually defeneseless.

But my reference to the paper was about the predictions being wrong. It was about even the most dire predictions included a caveat that restrictions wouldn't alter the number of people infected or killed........only the timing of those infections/deaths.

And Sweden has not put in new restrictions. In fact, they've been easing tghe few they originally implemented. For example, gatherings of over 50 were originally disallowed in Sweden. That number has since been increased to 500. Meanwhile, business remained, open, schools remained in session, and masks were never mandated.

Finally, it's not picking and choosing. Peru and Sweden were just two obvious examples. But you could also look at the relatively lax restrictions in places like Pakistan or Japan and their relatively low infection death rates compared to relatively strict restrictions in places like Belgium Italy or SPain and their relative high infection/death rates.

Finally, you're actually right about one thing (mark this day on your calendar). Lots of factors go into the final toll. For example, Sweden's much more elderly population would imply far more deaths than Peru's far younger population. Except that's not what happened.

Oh, and let's not forget about the large differences in lockdown deaths.

I will very much agree with you that places should be opened up to an extent, but not every place is like where you live.

Where do you live??

For months now 99% of all businesses around me and anywhere I've traveled have required masks for entry. People are wearing masks.
Here in the central Florida area, I would estimate there are 10-15% that don’t wear masks even where they are mandated.

If they stop letting prisoners out of prison due to covid and make them wear masks instead, i would be more apt to do so.

I was in the Philippines in February right when COVID started spreading. Manila is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. There is very little social distancing there and not many people have the luxury of working from home. Masks work, but you still need to practice social distancing and frequent hand washing

My thoughts, not that anyone asked or should care.

1) Do not believe in government mask mandates.

2) Fully support private mandates. If they have a mask rule in place and you don't want to wear one because "hoax", go somewhere else or get your ass thrown out.

3) You're a dumbass not to wear one when in public. I'm not worried about catching it and dying. I'm not worried about my family dying or developing myocarditis. I'm worried about the older fat guy with the Korean War Vet hat I saw driving around the cheese section the other day at HyVee.

4) We'd be back to halfway normal if people weren't dumbasses.

5) **** how both parties decided to make this political.

I was at Fareway getting groceries a few days ago. I pushed my cart down to the meat counter section and seen a guy in his 70's standing and waiting his turn. He was holding his mask in his fricking hand. I should have said to him, that mask is doing you no good in your hand. It's unbelievable the amount of stupid out there.

I was driving in my residential neighborhood last week and saw my DT Barnum loving neighbor getting his mail from the mailbox as I drove towards his house. I "punched it" and sped down the street as I approached. He turned and gave me an ugly look. I hit the brakes hard, stopped and asked what might be the problem. He asked something to the effect of "why the f--k was I driving so fast and what the f--k was my problem?"

I told him that I didn't like anyone mandating how fast I could drive and that, if he had a problem with it, maybe he should stay inside to stay safe and get his mail at midnight when hardly anyone is driving. Told him that neither he nor the government had any right to tell me how to drive my car. Asked him if there had been anyone killed in the neighborhood after getting hit by a car.

You have issues. I hope you don't own a gun.

And here we have an idiot who thinks he is Mr Macho. You could have it and be asymptomatic. But the problem would be is that you would be spreading it to others, yes, possibly killing someone. You're selfish with no respect for others. If I met you in one of those stores, I would take out my cell phone, plaster your face on the net for your employer to see. If you got fired, I would drink a beer and say goood riddance.
MY employer doesnt wear one either and i am not trying to be macho i just dont believe in them!

You have issues. I hope you don't own a gun.

Why? It clearly illustrates the double standard.

After all, the occupant in the White House and his supporters inform us all the time about freedom and not allowing the government to dictate how we live our lives and steal those freedoms. If the government can’t force me to wear a mask because that is a tyrannical imposition on my freedoms, why should it be able to dictate to me how I drive my car?

I just can't understand how you can say "I just don't believe in them!" Just because you don't understand the science behind it, doesn't mean they're not effective. That's like saying because you don't know how your phone works, you can't make calls.

Here's some fact checking for you to read:

I can’t believe you wasted all that time typing up something so dumb and pointless.

We all need to do our part so we can enjoy some BIG football. A public service message in Nashville has a guy saying “I wear a mask so I can enjoy college football”. Let’s all do our part wear a mask and convince others to do the same. Go hawks!
Quit social gatherings!!!!!!!

Just saw this somewhere else.

"Why are people still getting on those others that haven't been wearing a mask the last 6 months? Aren't they all dead by now?"
Again: This is not about us, it’s about flattering the curve and protecting our most vulnerable. I know people in this country have a hard time seeing beyond their own selfish interests, but just wanted to point that out.

Wearing a mask is more about protecting the people around you than it is about protecting yourself. Suppose we all walked around naked and someone peed on your leg. You would get wet. If you wore pants and someone peed on you, you would still get wet just not quite as wet as you would had you been naked. But if the other guy wore pants and peed, you would not get wet at all. That is how masks work.
Brilliant analogy, actually.

Really not that brilliant of an analogy. We have been taught to do theses things for decades and its called cover your mouth when you cough and get a tissue when you sneeze. That is essentially a mask.
Probably better than most masks because when I cough into my hand or arm it stops. And use a tissue and cover my nose with hand it stops. Not so much with a mask, the particles can fly thru.
By the way where there any masks studys done with these thoughts in mind or was the study done with and without a mask. Example , when coughing just to let particles fly and see how far they go. Then put on a mask and see if it was better than no mask at all. Did they do a study with covering the mouth or nose with hand or arm?
