enjoy talking football every now and then over here.. love watching UNL lose just like you guys do,
Every Iowa that beat one of Joe's later year teams had a dominant bell cow RB.. this team does not have that RB, I pointed that out during our discussions last week. Furthermore your OL is simply average, PSU prob has the 4th best DL in the conf right now behind UM/OSU/MSU. Your inability to run the ball consistently destroys your possibly potent play action game. Stanley is limited, he either throws quickly or works off of play action. If that kid has to create the play is essentially over. Your TE's are good, but your WR are bottom 1/3rd in the BIG. On top of everything else Stanley really starts to spray the ball badly beyond 12 yards past the LOS. I wouldn't want him on my team at Penn State, for many years under Joe we had carbon copies. Not sure why your coaches hate athletic QB so much.. but if you did go RPO you would be just another mid-level team, so maybe they need that identity.
Your DL is solid.. but would prob trail OSU/PSU/MSU/UM, but your LB play absent Jewell is several notches lower. Your DB's are bottom 1/3rd in the BIG. They (your DL) are all above average, but none of them seem to be all-world per se.. none of them are even at Sharif Miller level, and I think Sharif is a situational backup in the NFL.
The sched was perfect for you.. no MSU/UM/OSU.. but that wouldn't have done you any favors if you did get a NY6 bowl or better. With a mediocre Wisky, the only true test you had was a talented by inexperienced PSU team. Wisconsin might be less talented then Iowa from an athlete standpoint, Chryst is NOT a good recruiter. You'll face only 2 good QB's this year, McSorley and Thorson. It's ironic but Thorson turned down Penn State b/c we had Brandon Wimbush on board at the time LOLZ.
You should beat NW, their OL is garbage and if you shut down their running game Fitz and company will turtle. Speaking of Turtles, the game against Maryland should have gave you some pause last weekend.. your O didn't play well in that game either. You should beat Purdue.. Blough is the key, hit him and don't let him set his feet.
I think you will drop prob one more game, a 3 loss season is a good one for Iowa.. disclaimer is that you won't have any big wins like you did last year vs the Buckeyes. BTW, on the OSU game last year, OSU/PSU beat each other to death, OSU used every bit of energy in the epic comeback against Penn State and had nothing left heading into a hostile Kinnick Stadium. A tired PSU team also lost to MSU on the road with a 3 hour rain delay.
The one thing that Iowa can do in the short term is settle on a RB and build some comfort between him and the OL. Also, probably a few more deep sideline routes to keep the opposing D honest.
