Purdue @ Illinois

The latter…. Unfortunately it wasn’t close…

Not sure who has the worst attendance for football - Illinois or Indiana!
Plenty of good seats available for this game.
In my lifetime (I am older) Illinois has always been an enigma. If they were able to win the majority of home state recruiting battles, for 4 & 5 star talent, they would be a monster. They never have and probably never will.

agreed 100%

Side note: I wonder if cameramen/women hate doing Illinois or Indiana football games because they always need to angle away from all the empty seats.... ;)

The reason Illinois does not draw well is because Illinois is more of pro sports state. In particular, people who live in Chicago really don't care much about college sports.

What a tremendous comeback by Purdue on the road. The onside kick was fantastic. The 2-pt. conversion in regulation was great. And still they lost by one point in OT. Man, I feel for Purdue . . . and Cal.

good point, but the Illinois basketball team has usually been pretty good. Football less success.

Peak college football. It was 24 - 3 mid 3rd quarter. We would beat the breaks off the illini.

And, the people in the Chicago area don't tend to identify as being from Illinois ( they're from Chicago) like people from some other states identify as being from a state.

The worst part was the refs ignored an obvious fumble to give Purdue a win.

It’s because most of that talent is in and around Chicago. Chicago is essentially a state in itself. A state in which the Illini are just another B1G school.

They will never own Chicago. At best, they could maybe be second fiddle to ND. It’s why them being a “sleeping giant” is probably a mirage.

I live in NW Indiana which is in the Chicago television viewing area. For decades the 3 Chicago local sports news casts channels would often lead with ND highlights over U of Illinois and of course Northwestern, which is in Evanston. I reckon due to the large ND alumni base in Chicago and the suburbs.
