Purdue: scary good

I watched some of the game and they did look really tough. ...didn't AJ start and isn't he a senior?

AJ is still in the doghouse for some off court issues prior to the start of the season; nobody knows for sure what he did. 7' 2" sophomore, Isaac Haas has been starting since the start of the season. I guess Coach Painter is making AJ Hammons earn his starting spot back. I think after tonight he may have done just that. Haas started a few games last year to light a fire under AJ's butt.

They got something like 44pts from their bench. I liked this team from the start. They are the most well rounded team in college basketball and have one of the best benches. This team is built for long seasons and for long tournament runs. They were my pick to win the B1G after Swanigan signed on.

Purdue is good, very good. So is Maryland, Michigan State and Indiana (except of course for Crean). The Box Score tells a story about the Purdue/Pittsburgh game.

Good practice if someone doesn't look at these to see the four shot difference between a thirteen point win and a one point game.

But, even with Davis out with a knee problem, Purdue did look very good.

At this point, I feel MSU and PD will fight it out for the top spot. I don't believe MD, and certainly not IN, are on that level. Part of it is players, part of it coaching.

My thoughts too before the season started. In a battle between those four two come out clearly ahead in the coaching department, MSU and Purdue. Plus both of those coaches tend to temper there kids and run a controlled game. Watching Maryland last night was frustrating. They were so out of control. Teams like that don't go far in the NCAA Tournament.

Anyone writing off Indiana because of Crean should take a look at their schedule. Easiest in the Big Ten.

We are halfway through the nonconference and I think it is safe to say that right now Michigan State and Purdue look like the top two teams. But it reminds me of all the summertime posters who couldn't believe Wisconsin won't end up a top four team in the league. Too much certainty based on too little reason.

I'm sticking with my guess, Michigan State, Maryland, Indiana, Purdue on top and it should be in that order. But, like I say, it's a guess.

Iowa > all those teams

I wasn't that impressed with Maryland. Out of control. Trimble is a asset & liability all wrapped
up in one. UNI beat UNC. I know they were without Paige.
Maryland doesn't play any defense, this will hurt them in conference play.
MSU & Purdue will be the teams to beat and Wisky will not be in the top 4. They'll be lucky to finish in
the top half.

Maryland is overrated, always thought they were. Sure, they will be a good team, but not the 2nd best team in the country. Maybe more like 10th-15th.

They played a top 10 team on the road...a loss shouldn't be surprising. I must admit I didn't watch any of that game, but Maryland has a lot of talent, I suppose it will come down to how well their coach can get everyone to buy in and play as a team. The B1G is stacked, no question about it. Hawks have their work cut out for them this year. The team that I think is overrated is Michigan...they seem to get a lot of love in the press but I just don't see it...they lack depth and I think Lavert is the one that is really overrated. He seems like the type that looks great in warmups, but I really haven't seen much from him to justify the hpye (admittedly my viewing/sample size is small as it relates to that team). Purdue seems to be well coached and their front line is pretty impressive. There was a time not too long ago where I wondered if Painter was in trouble...they graduated that threesome including Moore and it seemed like things were getting derailed a bit, but he seems to have recovered and then some.

B10 has three really good teams. MSU Purdue and Maryland. Then there are a number of good teams. Michigan Iowa Wisconsin OSU Northerstern Indiana and maybe Minnesota. Then there are some not bad teams. PSU Nebraska. And finally not so good teams. Illinois Rutgers

Iowa can make the tournament this year. Would be a good season if they do. I feel better about those chances now than I did before the season started. Iowa shot very poorly tonight from the floor and from the line. Got out rebounded but still found a way to win. That's experience. That will win us a few games when we aren't playing well. I'm excited.

I wish Purdue played a top 25 team earlier in the year. The games vs Butler (not currently ranked) and then Vandy later in a little over two weeks will both be great tests for them.

With such a young team, they are sure to get better as the season goes along. Much like others have mentioned, they are set up to be very good the next 3 years.

The one thing with young players is there are nights where they look amazing and other nights where they look terrible.

I agree Purdue & MSU will be the top two teams in the Big 10. After that I think Maryland & Michigan are on about the same level as talent.

Then its a dogfight. If Iowa can figure out their rebounding & Free throw issues, they could be up towards the top. The only glaring issue is, they need to get more production out of their bench.
