Purdue: The good, the bad and the ugly

The Good:
-29, 17, 42. 29 IOWA fouls led to 17 TO and a season low 42 FG% for Purdue. Defensively punched them in mouth Worked.…!
-77 points. Holding #1 Offense and #1 Off Efficiency to 77 points. defensive intensity works!
-25, 22, 16. Minutes played for Kris, Perk, and Ogundele. IOWAs showed both perimeter tenacity (TOs) and interior stoutness (42%)

The Bad:
-15, 4, 3. JoeT played 15 for game, 4 in 1H (Iowa fell behind by 13) as Frans 2 Foul rule limited IOWAs defensive leader ( ending up with 3 fouls)
-19, 4. Jaden Ivey v Jobo. lost this match up badly. Ivey had blow by and dunk

The Ugly
-0-5. ConMac Dribbling in place to feed the post not needed this yr. shouldn’t be in the #1 or #2 depth chart at any position
-2 foul 1st half rule. A) Benching players with no hope of returning in the 1st half will deincent aggressive 1H D.
B) the performance gap between starters and back ups have never been less, so the threat to losing a starter to fouls becomes moot as the back up is almost as good (if not better JoBo-Perk, Rebraca-Ogundele, PMac-Kris, JoeT-Ulis) the only exception might be keegan, but there is the position where there is the most organizational depth (Kris, PMac, Rebraca, Sanfort)
-limiting JoeT to 15m in a game that plays to his strengths and was 3-4, 4 A 1 TO, 1 Steal I wonder if JoeT had been reinserted in 1H if IOWA is under 10 (versus down 13) and maybe steals this game?

Agree on the fouls. I had complete confidence in Ulis when he came in for Joe and he did a terrific job. Let Joe play 100% and if he gets in foul trouble so be it. Heck, we even have JBo and CMac available to play point, it may be our deepest position. There are no irreplaceable players on this team.

Sandfort needs to be given a longer leash. He misses a shot or two and he is essentially done. Same for Ulis. He is going to make some poor decisions, but I would rather have him forcing a runner in the lane than Connor cranking sidewinder 3's. Perkins could be the X factor as the season progresses. He is a true slasher, just needs to pull up a dribble or two sooner in some cases and go with the jumper vs. driving into the trees.

Joe T got his 2nd foul within FOUR minutes. You don't think he would have backed off on defense the rest of the half? The refs were all over him at that point. Sitting him was a smart decision as the second half proved.
HUH? IOWA loses the 1st half by 13, wins the 2nd half, with significant contributions by JoeT in the 2nd Half rally.

with JoeT in 1H IOWA -1
with out JoeT in 1H IOWA down -12
with JoeT available in 2H IOWA up +5
with JoeT in game IOWA +10
JoeT had incredibly productive 15m scoring 10 (3-4), 4 Assists, 1 TO, 1 Steal, 2 Reb

clearly the data supports that JoeT was producing huge efficiencies on Off and Def and sitting him for 16m of the 1H was a massive coaching blunder…

I would have said Keegan but if Kris and Pat play like they did in the second half this team really is deep.

I think the TOs are what got Sandfort pulled.

Fran would rather have weak defense and no TOs than the reverse.

Agree. 2 TO way worse than 2 missed shots. (ConMac as the poster child for this)

Also, recall Fran pulled and lectured Kris for his hard drive and then TO pass, coaching him to shoot that vs pass in traffic

TOs are definitely worse than missed shots but they're not necessarily worse than bad defense.
TO and really bad defense are both produce really bad outcomes…

one Sanford TO resulted in a pick six, the worst type of TO,
and right in front of Coach Fran. Ouch…

The refs were calling EVERYTHING against Iowa in the first half, but they backed off after halftime. What would have happened if Joe picks up his 3rd and 4th fouls before halftime? I'll tell you what would have happened, Iowa would have had little to no chance to do what they did at the end. That's why in THIS case it made sense. Normally if the refs weren't hammering Iowa with foul calls maybe Joe goes back in. But definitely not in this game.

Wtf are you talking about? What "data" shows that the refs WEREN’T calling fouls on Iowa at a high rate? What "data" shows that Joe didn't get 2 fouls in 4 minutes?

LOL.

Give it a rest. You really think Joe T would have played the same way with 2 fouls the rest of the first half the way he did with 2 fouls in the second half? I’m not necessarily a proponent of automatically sitting a player with 2 fouls for the balance of a first half but had no problem with what Fran did in this case. Joe has to be smarter.

the game was lost in the 1st half, IOWA down by 13…

but more importantly, JoeT did not foul out.

that is really what the priority is, to make sure no player ever fouls out of a game, the results of the game are clearly subservient to ensuring no player fouls out

# games started 28
# games with 4 fouls 2
# games fouled out. 0.

not a threat to foul out ..

sure, giving him a rest was smart for awhile. Unfortunately I think he only played 16 min total and ended up with only 3 fouls, so even if he'd played some in 1st half and gotten a 3rd foul, he still would have been able to log more time then he did with Frans sit the entire half policy.

The game ended up being close but we were down 19 because of some of the lineups Fran put out earlier while Joe was on the bench + fact that Purdue is good. No other coach in B1G would be playing CMAC these many minutes and CMAC's 0-5 is actually most of the difference in the score.....if CMAC were a 40% shooter, that would be 6pts right there.

Lets see if Fran gets this group to NCAA tourney and if they can actually compete in all their NCAA games.
This group has potential but it also might be 0-2 if Illinois win at Carver.

What would have happened if Joe played more in the first half is a good question. Maybe they aren't down by 14 at the half. Maybe our floor general plays more than 16 minutes. Maybe they win. Nobody knows because Joe wasn't playing.

Of course maybe if Fran didn't sit Joe from 12:17 to 5:27 in the second half they wouldn't have been down 13 when he got back in the game. Then down 4 with 37 seconds left he reinserts Cmac and then JBo and pulls Joe again. This is inexplicable to me.

I think it was the 2nd bad pass by Sandfort that resulted in a turnover that got him pulled.

Inexplicable is exactly the description of how you would describe ConMac getting 19 minutes and JoeT gets 15 minutes.

saving JoeT to keep him from fouling out does more harm than the potential risk of JoeT fouling out,

of course he was never in endanger of fouling out with only 3 total fouls and only 1 in his last 11 minutes while still playing at an extremely aggressive style scoring 10 and leading the defensive led comeback.

i hope you don’t mind me using your word inexplicable to describe this strategy moving forward.

Lots if guessing at what could have happened but as it was, Joe T was there to help Iowa get to within 2 near the end. Without Keegan. Against the #1 team in the country. On their floor.

That was some damn good coaching.

What was the reason he played so little in the second half?

Defensively this is the best we have played against Purdue in Mackey since 2015-16 season our last victory there. Most of the games since they have been at least 16 point losses. I really like the way our defense stepped up in the second half especially. In the past they have killed us from long range, not so much on Friday.

Defense specialists Kris, Perk, and Ogundele all played near career highs minutes played, and JoeT was defensively impactful in his 15m

none of those guys minutes in the last game at Mackey
