Painter didn’t pull any punches did he lol.
That's interesting....I think that he fits the Illinois style with their defensive emphasis. I wonder if he could end up somewhere like an Indiana St or Drake/UNI level and be a standout....he's a tough player, hopefully he doesn't stay in the B10.
The implication seems to be that he didn't do the work that his teammates did in the off season. It would seem that he is now going to be motivated to improve his performance.
Maybe so but I can’t imagine Fran ever saying anything like that. It’s on the coaches to motivate the players.

I agree 100%...(except players-Like Luka-are highly motivated internally and that is something you look for in recruiting, also known as work ethic). Fran is much more considerate and values the relationship with players....Painter apparently not. I think I read that he had some similar comments about Harms but can't remember where I saw those.
I'd say Illinois and Underwood are a prefect fit, if he wants to stay in the Big Ten.....
When Eastern first announced his transfer, the rumors on the internet were that his mom was forcing it because she thought Painter was holding back his ability to make the NBA by not allowing him to be the focal point of the team on offense.
Whether that's true or Eastern in fact did not put in the effort that others did would make sense when you hear Painter talk about it.

She did her son no favors on their message boards....just a nice, slow moving train wreck.
That part I hadn't heard, but it was pretty consensus on the Purdue, IU, and even Michigan boards that his mom/family played a large role in why he decided to transfer.
But when Painter makes comments about transfers making the NBA, it's like connecting the dots from the rumors to his comment.
Eastern could be a valuable piece to a team that needs a perimeter stopper, but if he is one of your top options on offense, your offense is not very good.
Players at that level need to be intrinsically motivated to improve. If you have to rely on a coach for motivation to improve + succeed, then you are in trouble.
If a person with DI talent can't get motivated to get better on their own..not sure what to tell them

External motivation can only accomplish so much and only for a short time. As others have noted, no matter what field you're talking about, if you aren't self-motivated, you're severely limiting your opportunity to succeed. You could look it up. There is a ton of research.
