Putting the 42,287 into Perspective

Question for those sitting at the distal end of the stadium. Could you see the action very well?

So I was thinking driving home, is it possible for the Hawkeyes to break the 100,000 mark for the season?
After looking at the schedule, it appears they have 6 home events left not counting National Duals (if they are a site) and the Big 10's.
None of the home dates are really big meets:
Iowa City Duals
S. Dakota St.
Rutgers
Purdue
MN (who is down)
Indiana
So my question is, do either the National Duals or Big 10's count towards "our" attendance? If not I would guess there's no chance to break the 100,000 mark.

Only reason I bought season tickets this year was cause of the BIG 10 tourney and Olympic Trials. I wouldn't have bought season tix if I would only get to see a home meet duel line up like the one we got this year. The only intriguing thing about the upcoming duel opponents are matchups at a few weights. The team competition aspect is a foregone conclusion. Kinda sad when I'm looking at South Dakota St. as the one I'm marking my calendar down to go watch above all else. Minny needs to bounce back. I enjoy competitive duels with them, but this year is gonna be a bloodbath.

No

Anyone know how many season tix were sold this year? I think it's usually around 6K? With 6 home meets left we will need to avg about 10K/dual to hit 100K. Doubtful with the remaining home schedule but hopefully grapple inspired some more fans that will show up.

Too bad the IC duals couldn't be spaced out to every 4 hours and each dual counted toward the attendance total, like a day/ night double header in baseball.

Let's focus on wrestling tough across the board, attendance will take care of itself. Just Win Baby!

Dude going Ric Flair on the broadcast at the beginning while Shane Spakrs is talking is priceless.

If

I'm not mistaken that's Gable's son in law!

Haha...even better. Was in the Atlanta airport one time going to some training down in Florida and my buddy and I (both of us several beers in) saw the actual Ric Flair. My buddy, who is a big time redneck and pro wrestler follower, starts hollering, "It's Ric Flair....WOOOO!" over and over. Flair just put his head down and walked as fast as he could away from us. Good times.

I love supporting the Iowa Hawkeye wrestlers regardless of who the Big Ten assigns to come into Carver.

There had to be far more than 42k in Kinnick.

No empty seats in south grand stands. East and west were full all but the north ends at the bottom.

Had to be over 50k for sure, right?

I would love to hear the actual number because it had to be more than 42,000. Andy Hamilton's twitter account has some pictures that make it pretty clear that there's more than that. I figure they go to all of this effort to put it on, they might as well get an accurate head count.

Did someone mention Ric Flair? WOOOOOO

FYI. Ric was a Minnesota 2 time state champion and played football at Minnesota also

I have to wonder if people were spread out in the GA sections, making it look more full. If that's the case, then 42k isn't unreasonable.

And I renewed my season tickets without worrying about the schedule. They're so cheap, and you're supporting the team. Even if I have to move away for grad school (and may get to one dual a year), I'll still be getting my season tickets.

Groups of people got in for free around intermission. I know a guy whose whole group walked in. They had tickets but didn't get scanned. He didn't have any reason to lie to me so take it for what it's worth. There ended up closer to 50k than 40k.

I think Rick Novak tweeted at Metcalf that the number used was tickets sold, not tickets scanned. Metcalf was also convinced that there were more people there, but unless they were letting in people who just had no ticket, it seems the number is accurate.

Maybe our friend rnovak can chime in on this.

The number wasn't accurate. I don't know how more clearly it can be said. His group walked right in without showing their tickets. Maybe the numbers are only 10 off and I spoke with the only group that this occurred with.

You said they had tickets, right? Then they were already counted, at the time they bought the tickets. I don't know how (much) more clearly it can be said. As PrairieHawk stated, the official attendance number is based on tickets sold, not tickets scanned at the gate. Unless your friends didn't buy tickets and just walked in (not what you said), they were already counted.

I am saying people that didn't have tickets were able to walk into Kinnick after intermission. The guy I spoke with had tickets but I don't believe his whole group did. The point is they didn't know he had tickets because they didn't look at them. It really shouldn't be that hard to figure out but I don't type well so maybe it's on my end. My argument has nothing to do with official attendance numbers. It was obvious the official attendance number was tickets sold because it was clear to ALMOST everyone there were more than 42k in Kinnick. You and pairie can have the last word.

Yes, I know that Okie State's wrestling attendance does not match its success on the mat, but they seem to me to be in a good position to at least attempt to break the record for the following reasons:
1. Most likely to have warm weather.
2. They just the witnessed this first hand and had to be impressed
3. The Bedlam Series. They always play OU late in the football season. The always wrestle OU early in the wrestling season. Doubleheader.

Not sure you all understand this or not but to be clear, butts in the seats does not become official until Lone Clone says so.

OK, if you're saying that your friend had tickets but not everyone with him did, and they all got in, then you've got a point. That wasn't at all clear in what you originally posted. I don't need to have the last word as long as the last word is accurate. :)

That was my first time in Kinnick so I can't rely on the eye test for myself, but some of the people I was with thought it might have looked like more than 42,000 because people were not cramming themselves in as tightly as you have to when every seat on the bleacher is assigned. The people with GA tickets could spread themselves out more, which makes it look like more seats are taken than actually are. I don't know how that affects people's perceptions of the crowd.

Even with the logistical glitches, it was a fantastic event. I was part of the last record-setting crowd at Carver vs ISU, and it was fun to be part of this one, too.

The 10k people with general admission seats didn't have to pack in like sardines so those 10k looked more like 20k.
This is my best guess too. I know my group all agreed that it looked like more than 42k. We were in GA though and we were definitely spaced out pretty well.

I understand gablefan's point now, but I doubt there were more than 1-2k people there that never purchased tickets.

Does anybody know what the budget is for wrestling for a season? Is there any chance this 1 event was able to cover the budget? $420k plus concessions is a pretty good day!

No, football and basketball cover all other sports. However, this little bump in athletic revenue won't hurt, but remember the extra costs to hold the event. The mat alone was 6k and there were hundreds of extra man hours to pay for. I'm pretty sure brands & co were doing this to get number one attendance spot and and revenue is icing on the cake

There were also certainly no shows. So anyone admitted without a ticket was likely balanced by a ticket not being used.
