What is the solution here? We basically maxed out our potential this year getting 10 wins with Petras/Padilla. With a brutal schedule next year it’s going to get ugly quick unless something gets figured out here.

I'm done with over throw Petras. Padilla not the second coming either. The way he grips the ball and resulting ugly balls he throws contribute to the drops when he plays.

I hope Labas is the guy, but the reality is, Iowa has missed out on all of its main targets in the 20 class (Labas) and 21 class (May) and both guys they got were fall back guys.

Oh, and the guy they actually wanted in the 19 class (Hogan) has transferred.
But Labas has apparently looked far better in practice than Hogan, which is probably one of the reasons Hogan transferred. So missing out on your guy sometimes matters, but sometimes the guy behind him was better. We chose Petras over Zack Wilson - look how that turned out.

Says a lot about how pathetic KOK is if our QBs are getting QB gurus to coach them up
I'm not saying KOK isn't doing a poor job but going to see a specialist doesn't really mean much in that regard. Now whoever petras saw actively promoting himself through videos of his play, that's a big oof.

Yeah if Labas isn’t the second coming of Long they need to hit the portal ASAP
Well, seeing that his offer list is 'peppered' with MAC offers, my guess is that Labas will not set the college football world on fire any time soon.... ;)

I have no idea if Labas is the answer, I do however trust that after the “open” QB competition during the offseason Iowa will go with the trusted upper class man vs the unproven younger talent.

Yeah as much as people like myself are killing Brian and rightfully so KOK warrants criticism too. What we are paying him and results from qb is pretty under whelming on top of being brought in to hold the hand of our inexperienced OC who has done a poor job.

but prime example why Kirk should look at transfer qb is NW last season. No way Fitz wins it in 20’ if he doesn’t get Ramsey and he went out and got him after an awful 19’ campaign by his offense. He even tried again this year with hilinski who played some but didn’t win the job in fall camp. I give Fitz credit for at least trying to address the need and brought in some competition at a position of need.

There is a minimum athleticism for the QB position. I wouldn't call Michigan's QB world class runner, but when the did the designed QB draw it pretty much was a defense killer...and they did it in smart way with motion to clear outthe LInebackers.

How many designed QB runs did Iowa have this past year? One for he season as far as I can recall. If you don't have to account for QB taking off on a designed run or a scramble, it is a lot easier to defend. Ask Phil Parker, because he doesn't have an answer.

It's funny how last year a large number of people say Petras didn't have spring practice. Well when he did get spring practice, that really didn't seem to help. I'm kind of at a loss

They weren’t fall back guys in my book because they still got them plenty early. Labas ended up highly ranked on 247.

QB is not our problem, the oline is
BS, the Oline is a problem but our current QBs especially Petras are not BIG material. Petras was overthrowing guys by 30 feet, is quick to just chuck it out of bounds. Pass....

That said the real problem is KF, unless he miraculously decides to takes his hands off the offense and let a true OC design then we are stuck with two things:

A) QBs that never develop or regress as they are hand cuffed

B) Up hill battle recruiting QBs and skill players as they would be crazy to come play in this offense

QB is not our problem, the oline is
Why not both?

That first drive of the second half is the last I want to see of SP, but it won't be. Awful pass to an open KJ on first then not throwing to a wide open NR crossing right in front of him for a first down on third, instead throwing to a well covered KJ.

He's not the answer. The OLINE needs help but there's enough evidence that shows SP isn't a B1G starting QB; AP certainly isn't either.

Not sure we know how good or bad our current QBs are. They play in a horrible offensive system with what appears to be less than stellar coaching in BF and KOK. If I could only keep one of the two., it would be Padiila. This is no knock on Spencer. The reality he just does not have the mobility to extend plays and throw on the run. Padilla has shown some flashes that he is capable of that. Padilla at least makes the defense account for his mobility. The days of the QB as a "Game Manager" are pretty much gone.

They need to hit the portal for a QB, offensive linemen, and develop passing plays that actually helps the receivers get open rather than just relying on them to beat the coverage on every play. At least that's what it looks like from where I'm sitting, but I'm sure there are others who can be more specific.

Don't worry boys, Ken O'keefe will fix it.....he's really good at that and has a proven track record.
Over the last seven years, Iowa has had 3 4* QB recruits. Not bad for Iowa.
Tyler Wiegers: never played, a grad transfer out.
Spencer Petras: 2 year starter. So so results.
Duece Hogan: never played, transferring out after two years.

I don't think it's a QB issue as much as it is a coaching issue. Say what you will about a team that runs an option offense and only throws eight times a game, but at least that team has a plan and identity and they stick to it. Iowa's offense is much, much worse. They seemingly have no plan or at least have reached the point where they've gotten so lost in what they're trying to do, it appears as if they have no plan.

First down is a perfect example. Iowa tries to avoid third and long at all costs, so your main focus here is positive yards. The more yards you get, the more flexibility you have on second down. KF has long been touted as an offensive line guru and we know he likes to run the ball, so in an ideal world, Iowa can consistently break off a 4-6 yard run on first down to give them a ton of options on second and medium or second and short.

Iowa is not able to do that.

Goodson got 43 carries combined in the three games we lost or 14.3 carries per game. The lack of carries should tell you all you need to know about how Iowa's offense isn't built to be effective, but lets dig deeper.

Of those 43 carries, seven of them resulted in a loss of yardage (16.2% and -3 yards per rush).

29 of them (67.4% and .62 yards per play) resulted in a gain of three yards or less.

That means two-thirds of Goodson's rushing attempts in the games we lost totaled less than a single yard (.62) per play on average.

Don't think I'm blaming Goodson, either. He has had absolutely nowhere to run for most of the season and I don't blame him for any perceived lack of effort with how poorly our offense played and how hopeless the offense felt at times.

I was watching the game with 3 other people and all of were shocked just how incompetent the Iowa offense and in particular - the QB - was. It was pretty obvious that once the Hawkeyes got down double digits that the game was over mainly due to not having the offense to come back

Relax.
we could use a blind kid and still beat your cyclones.
