Growing up in Muscatine, the name Murray Wier was synonymous with greatness. I was born in 56, but my Dad use to talk a lot about what Murray could do with a basketball.

Saw he passed away today. What a great Hakweye!

I've heard and read many great stories about Murray over the years. Thoughts and prayers to the family of this former Hawkeye great.

As a native of Waverly, we played his East Waterloo teams many times. Great coach, great man, great representative for the sport of basketball.

My father too, always said Murray was one of Iowa's greatest. It is ironic that my father passed yesterday at the age of 93.

Interesting Tidbit: Did a little research on Wier tonight and found out that Murray played for the Waterloo Hawks in 1950, the same time that Johnny Orr played for the Hawks. Both men took their talents to the high school coaching ranks, Wier to Waterloo and Orr to Dubuque before he ended up at Michigan and eventually Iowa State.

Apparently the pay for professional players in the '50's wasn't lucrative enough to keep them playing.........
