Raina replacement

I like where Ben wend with his most current hire....I think Jan needs to do something similar. Big recruiting ties and hungry/aggressive. Does not need to be a hire with Iowa ties.

I do think at some time Kate could be a great addition to the staff.

Jacy Sheldon was Director of Player Development at Ohio State. She only can take part in recruiting when a recruit is on campus.
Ya we wouldn't need kate to recruit if we move Abby or Tania up. Only coach the sf and pf. Then be on the bench

Think Jan needs to hit a home run on this hire.

Her prior two hires:
1) Sean gets kudos for the added defense he brought to the table. He served as the Director of Player Personnel, Development and Recruiting Operations at UNC before coming on board with us. Have no idea how deep his book is or how much trust he could sell. However, Sean helped build UNC up with most it's players to a respectable team.
However, there's nothing that screams recruiting genius here.

2) Randi gets a wait and see yet. I'm not impressed with the post coaching and have no idea how she will work as a recruiter either. From the podcast I've seen of her, nothing jumps off the page that she has exceptional communication skills. Sometimes she looks like a wreak in them speaking to media. Not a good look.

Do we need a coach?
Do we need a recruiter?
Do we need a recruiter and a coach?

To me, recruiting seems to have taken a back seat so far. This hire must have recruiting success as a primary focus just as much as guard heavy coaching. Abby and Tania aren't enough. You need as many coaches as possible with a recruiting background. You never know who is going to step up the most. Just relying on two main recruiters is swimming upstream in my book unless they are very exceptional recruiters. Would not classify Abby and Tania as exceptional recruiters at this point.

Would even go a step further and find a wizard that understands reward incentives. Every player has a different value system. You need to find out what makes this player tick and their rewards that go along with it.

Some people it's 100% about the bag. We don't give a flying f about this type.

There are some who value a plaque on the wall over cash. That plaque is something tangible that they can show their family, friends and future children over and over and over again. It's like an honorary degree to them. No ones going to see the cash in your bank account. Once it's spent, that reward is exhausted without anyone ever knowing about your efforts to make the system a better place. This plaque acts like an example reward/incentive. You need to find out all their "plaques" that they care about to see/show how you can fulfill those for them.

You need to have a recruiter that speaks to the players reward system as well as how you can see them benefiting the team with their skills. Speaking to their value system acts like a confidant who speaks directly to them and cares about them as a human being and not just a generic pitch that they could have spoken to any Jane Doe.

Parents also want to know how their kid is going to be taken care of in a healthy environment that rewards them as well as make them thrive on the court to be a star.

Jan needs to hire someone who's going to help us swim downstream and not upstream with our recruiting efforts.

I agree with needing a good, national recruiter, maybe an AAU coach? However, times are changing, recruiting the best players will depend more on $ than a good recruiting coach.

Maybe Kate Martin leaves the W for this opportunity?
lol NO. There is no way she says no to playing unless it’s not working out. She will be able to coach when she retires…. And will likely have a lot of different opportunities to do so.

If she does decide to come back and coach at Iowa down the line that would be incredible for our program.

Their is no conflict in the seasons. She could play the wnba and coach. Unless she wants to play in that new league.

She'd be a great addition imo.

I personally have no idea who the good assistant coaches are, that are available or interested. I'm sure Jan has numerous contacts in the coaching ranks and will find a good replacement.

Maybe last year's transition has colored my expectations, but I would think they would have a replacement by Monday, yah?

Didn't Kate Martin just play in the Unrivaled league too? I'm not sure that league has a long future, although getting Paige Bueckers will buy them a bit more time next year to draw better. But as long as they are still around, if she's good enough to be chosen for that with the limited spots then she's got plenty of playing career left in the WNBA with the expansion teams adding more roster spots.

Everyone I’ve talked to who is knowledgeable about the coaching staff thinks Randi has been a great hire. I think Tania Davis is outstanding and would be ready for more coaching and recruiting responsibilities. I think her and Abby make our guard coaching a strength.

That's fine! They have a right to that opinion. She might be a great hire to them. I get it. No problem.

However, my version of exceptional is different than their version of it. That's how simple it is to figure it out.

I was a skeptic when Randi was hired because I hoped Jan would hire a known successful D1 recruiter. Nothing in Randi's DIII background suggests she would be a plus recruiter, and Jan made clear that when Randi was hired, she was not hired to be a recruiter, stating that she (Jan), Raina and Abby would the main 3 recruiters. I defer to others on Randi's success as an assistant for the things she was hired for, but Raina's replacement needs to be a plus recruiter.

Frankly I was more impressed with Iowa's post development this season than the year before. O'Grady was finally an offensive threat for the first time in her career, and Heiden hit the ground running. How much of that is Henderson vs. Jensen vs. Heiden just coming in at a high level? I don't know.

I don't think she would do that due to her relationship with Jan even if she had the okay, just not professional.

It's been one season. And the first season without the best women's college player in the history of the sport. Maybe give people a chance before claiming someone isn't cutting it.

She may have been selected just trying to get CC. I don't want to take anything away from her, but it's a possibility since she's more of a backup.

Brandon Clay reporting LaSondra Barret former GT assistant as someone to keep an eye on for Iowa WBB assistant position. 35 years old LSU grad. She is following Jan, Iowa WBB and Hannah on I.G. Added bonus she is being followed by Kate Harpring, Jenica Lewis and Finley Chastain.

The exact type of outside candidate, just based on the resume, that would be a great addition and address the biggest areas of need in the current staff.

Harpring has probably been following her for a while as a GT target, but that's actually pretty interesting as a relationship continuity.

The others? Maybe more interesting, because it indicates communication--->this hire might be happening.

Heiden definitely got better and in the BIG tourney received a huge hug from Randie when she came to the bench.

Just thought I'd pass along some research I did and what could be the recruiting piece of the puzzle Iowa lacks and why it's reared it's ugly head to a pinnacle now.

@nu2u wrote a couple of posts that had one of components in it that we/I thought might be a big draw to come to Iowa and that was the packed houses along celebrity fan fare. He also brought up doing and independent study on why talented players are not coming to Iowa. I also remember writing in a post about hiring a PR firm to create a msg that one inspires and two if there are negative stereotypes holding players back on how off base it is and why.

I also wrote a piece on our portal activity over the last 5 years since CC was here that has only yielded 3 players and all of them are under 6'0" tall before this portal season took off. Here we are with ~26% of portal off the board and no commits again. We have been named as linked with at least 6 players and not one signed on and committed elsewhere. So no big talent wanted to come when CC was here and hardly no big named talent while CC is gone.

Now we can't even get a talent to replace Lucy. We've had 2 PGs go to the WNBA and no one wants to come and be the 3rd? It's frustrating to say the least. It just was't wonder girl CC that had all the talent to go to the W at that position. We've had 2 recent back-to-back NATTYs and 2 back-to-back PGs go to the W. So I'm thing to myself that something is clearly wrong here.

I also wrote a post on our next coaching hire to replace Raina needs to be a home run because we can't close the deal. If we have a CC and then Lucy go to the W and a portal PG still decides they want to go elsewhere along with all the other non-commits before it, then you better find a deal closer.

The problem is I don't have enough data to base my decision on what that home run deal closer looks like even if Jan did hire them.

Besides nu2u posts and @Scott559 post on LaSondra Barrrett and reading her bio, something inspired me do a deeper dive into this problem we seem to have despite having almost every conceivable factor in our favor after recent 2 NATTY runs. Even Brad at Swarm said we were only a small handful that had $ to get Lucy last year.

So I though who could possibly help in finding this answer and that's when Emilee Skinner came to my mind. Why? Because I recall she stated something of why she committed to Duke that stuck out like a sour thumb to me. So I went looking for more of her quotes on why she committed there. I'm going to post those quotes at the end.

Well, think I possibly discovered at least what an arm and leg of what a home run coach looks like.

I'm posting this little tidbit while researching just because it has a little piece to the puzzle and it's about as close to answer that Iowa could deliver to ELITE talent now.
"Also there's are some quotes from Kate Martin at the bottom about how Raina is why Kate thought she could ever play in the W. "Martin recalls scoffing at Harmon's assertion that she could one day play in the WNBA." "I looked at her like she had six heads.""

Why is Iowa having this problem now? I believe it's because all of the recruits and portal players we're going after now are mostly ELITE or highly rated talent. Not just top talent, but ELITE! These elite players want something extra special than top players. The 2026 targets are almost all exclusively ELITE talent. Combine that with a prior elite target in Emliee Skinner and her comments hinted to me as to what our problem could be now. You may not feel the same way but it's what I hear between the lines of her comments without disrespecting anyone.

First, I'll start with the comment from Skinner when she committed to Duke that stood out to me.
"Coach Kara Lawson is really good at what she does. She has a lot of experience, and she's really smart.”

Those 3 words, "she's really smart" is what I thought was really quite striking. Everything in that quote could be applied to almost any top coach. However, her stating "really smart" is going beyond just a casual comment. It's a stressing point that makes her unique! This is why I started with Skinner to find more from her.

Next is the main point that gets me to our response to combat this potential problem. Here is partially of what "really smart" means:
"Coach Kara (Lawson) has a lot of experience. She played in the WNBA and whenever I talk to her, she talks about how she wants to implement the new pro-style of play," she told 247Sports. "I'm learning how they play and how that translates to the next level."

In my mind, our new home run coach also needs to be a recruiter with WNBA experience and preferably with as much star power as possible. This is how the ELITE high school players can feel they can get to the next level beyond college. They're thinking with the end goal in mind.

Is LaSandra Barrret the right answer? I don't know that as I'm not plugged into all the nauces to go with W experience. However, if this is a candidate to replace Raina, it's a step in the right direction with her W experience and with her GA Tech recruiting/coach role could even have a Harpring angle to it to help us with her.

Bottomline: Fans and celebrity are not going to get elite talent to the W, but having a coach that can elevate them with tips and tricks from prior W experience can. In the words of Skinner, that's what "really smart" to them is all about!

Anyways, just my attempt to try to find a "commit" solution without having more insider intel to guide me. Yes, I know NIL is also a big part of the equation.

Btw, I'll throw in one more potential problem with the class of 2026 if we don't get this fixed.
hawkbuck says: "The staff feels good about their chances with Skinner."

So feeling good about the class of 2026 is just gambling in my book.

More articles with Skinner quotes:
“I like all the coaches. Obviously, coach Kara [Lawson] is really good at what she does. She has a lot of experience, and she’s really smart.”
“I enjoy talking to those guys a lot,” Skinner told On3 in a previous interview. “I think they all have a good personality. All the schools I’m talking to are kind of a little bit different – the coaches are a little bit different personality-wise, but I think they all are good people. The team and coaching staff had a good vibe. Campus is really pretty. I like the facilities.”
“I would say I like to play in transition a lot,” Skinner said in a previous interview. “I like to play quick. I don’t like to slow things down. I like to get out and go. I would say I can get to the rim. I have a good mid-range, but I think I can shoot the three well. I just need to learn how to shoot it with less space and faster…I think I’m a good defender, but there’s always more to learn.

A 6-foot-0 point guard from Utah, Skinner told ESPN, “I chose Duke because I like what coach Kara is building. The culture and the people are amazing there. Coach Kara has done everything I want to do and I want her to be my mentor through my college career.”

"I started taking visits in the spring and then into the fall. When I saw different campuses and staffs, it helped me to learn what felt right and what I want," Skinner told ESPN about her process. "I built great relationships through this whole process and learned more about what it takes to be successful at the next level. I'm grateful for the coaches who took time to recruit me."

"Right off the bat, me and coach Kara connected in a lot of different ways," Skinner told KSL.com. "She's done a lot in her career, coached at the highest level and played at the highest level. It's a great way to go in, where she can be my mentor and challenge me. My teammates there are great, too; I'm excited to play with everyone."
"But she's also just a person, at the end of the day," the five-star combo guard added of Lawson. "(S)he's really fun to talk to and pick her brain. She's really smart."

Lastly...
"Before making her decision, Skinner took official visits to Iowa, UCLA and Duke. But after her visit Duke, Skinner was set on the Blue Devils and was prepared to make her announcement. As a result, she canceled her upcoming visits to TCU and Notre Dame."

[Obviously Lawson closed the deal to stop her from visiting others on her top 5 list.]

"Coach Kara (Lawson) has a lot of experience. She played in the WNBA and whenever I talk to her, she talks about how she wants to implement the new pro-style of play," she told 247Sports. "I'm learning how they play and how that translates to the next level. She's also really good at getting the best out of her players."
