Ran into a long, long time ticketholder for football ...

Talked a little Iowa Football today with a long-term ticket holder. It was interesting to ask and listen to him about the State of the Iowa Football program.

Iowa went to 1 bowl in 3 seasons during 1992-94 under J. Hayden Fry.
Iowa went to 2 bowls in 3 seasons during the 2012-14 under Kirk Ferentz.

1992- Fry was 5-7 (no bowl, but played Miami-FL to kickoff the 1992 season)
1993 - Fry was 6-6 (37-3 bowl loss to California in the Alamo Bowl - QB play reminded me a little of 2012)
1994 - Fry was 5-5-1 and not bowl eligible for the 2nd year in 3 seasons.

Iowa finished 5th, 8th and 7th in the Big Ten from 1992 to 1994.

The 1995 season was better, but Iowa still finished only 6th in the Big Ten. 8-4 finish with Fry's best bowl win ever, with a 38-18 win over Washington.

Some suggest Fry should have retired, after 1995. He did see his DC Bill Brashier retire.

16-18-1 with one loss in bowls vs. 19-19 with two losses in bowls

The 2015 season will be interesting. Should Iowa fans be surprised by the down tic in Iowa Football during the past three seasons?

Iowa in 1992 began to make some shifts in the schemes. It didn't do well. Iowa leaned heavy on JC players. It didn't equal much success either.

Now, we have dealt with a tough run again, especially, since 2012. The 4-8 season was extremely ugly.

Iowa is 599-528-38 in regular season games. We can thank Hayden and Kirk for each being on the plus side of the W-L column overall. From 1961 to 1980, Iowa didn't have a winning season. Evy was great as a football coach. His role as an AD was anything but successful, for the most part.

Iowa is 14-13-1 in bowl games. Thanks much in part to Hayden and Kirk. Evy was 2-0 in winning Iowa's only Rose Bowl games.

The Football Writers Association of America awarded the national championship and the Grantland Rice Trophy to Iowa in 1958.

The University rarely makes much of this season. Of course, the majority of us weren't alive in 1958.

I asked the person. Should Kirk be let go?

He said no and brought up the down period, as Hayden Fry retired. From 1995 to 1998, Iowa's only losing season was 1998, when Fry finished 3-8.
