On Saturday I noticed Flo was showing some live district wrestling. I decided to search for emmetsburg. I didn't see video but there was a video with Kenny Monday. In the interview it talks about him looking through some old brackets. He used to travel up for the emmetsburg youth tournament from Tulsa. In 7th grade he wrestled Barry Davis at the emmetsburg tournament. Monday won 9-0.

Speaking of emmetsburg, I remember watching 2005 state wrestling tournament. They had a heavyweight make it to finals with a losing record if I'm not mistaken. & They won the team title

I was in H.S. in the 70s and Emmetsburg was dominant in both football and wrestling. Besides Jeff Kerber, if I remember correctly, the other studs on the team were Rich Stillman and Dan Kaufman. Am I remembering correctly?
I don't miss the days of Emmetsburg being a power. Nor programs like Harlan and Solon, even though Harlan sneaks back up every once in a while still.

Didn't like it while living there and taking beatings from them... but absolutely miss the Emmettsburgs of the world being a small town dynasty.

I'm sure they weren't all hometown boys but it was mostly a 20+ year dynasty built on the program, starting from elementary school and building up through the years.

It's a conundrum for sure.

We traded rural powers for programs like Iowa City Regina, and some of the smaller suburbs that took advantage of being close to bigger cities over the years.

There needs to be some kind of button you can push to just make them all go away......

It was 215 and it was coach Bob Kenny's son, Adam.

The small-town dynasty I most remember from the 70s was Morning Sun. It started in the 60s with Bob Darrah as coach (who moved to bigger pastures at Urbandale and DM Dowling) and continued past the mid-70s. A school of around 50 kids, all grades, so 30 or less boys, who often dominated 3A schools. Lots of great teams/athletes from there.

It was an amazing run and he almost decked the highly favored #1 guy in the final before eventually losing by fall. It was Adam Kenny at 215 but I'm pretty sure he didn't have a losing record. I think a number of losses but not a losing record although I could be mistaken.

It was Adam Kenney. I was sitting in the lower bleachers at vets next to his opponent from independence parents. I believe it was like 15-13 after the first period. They just kept throwing each other. It was a wild match. He had a great run to the finals.

I wrestled in this tournament in 8th and 9th grade. I remember the bus from Oklahoma rolling up to the high school and all the wrestlers getting off the bus. I think I still have an old program from this tournament stuffed away somewhere. I believe there were 13 states represented there. Great memories.

I remember seeing the cornhuskers getting off a bus. They were real tall.

THE Brent Hagen!
I didn't show up in Britt until '78, but he definitely WAS the Gold Standard in Britt/WH wrestling.
No amount of praise is adequate to honor DeLeon. The deal is he was an even better person.
I'm glad Spike had the honor or competing for him.

I NEED to add that ol' Rico wrote a tremendous article (above) about Brent Hagen/Britt wrestling!!!!! I cannot recall seeing that article before this thread.
The win over Sanderson came in the finals of the 1997 UNI Open. 8-6 on a late reversal. After the match I told him that he "...had just beaten the #1 recruit in the country...". He didn't think much of it as he was focused on cracking the Iowa starting lineup, which he did about a month into the season.

Yes Kudos to Rico!! It’s a great article because of great questions he asked
