Rank the B1G West Head Coaches

Chryst (will have Wisconsin at a high level for many years)
Mike Riley (Struggle putting him here but seems to have the program in right direction and from what I have seen is a good game day coach in regards to adjustments, "scratching were it itches", and utilizing the right personnel)
Fitz (does more with less than any other coach in the division)
Kirk (specifically as a college game day coach - not taken into account other positive factors with him representing Iowa)
Lovie (TBD - could move up depending on first couple years)
Claeys (Stretch hire, not sure he will make it more than 3 years)
Hazell (fired at end of season)

1-Riley: very underrated coach. Winning over 50% of your games at Oregon State is even harder than winning at Iowa State; Corvalis may very well be the most godforsaken place on the face of the earth.

2- Chryst: Has the Badgers playing way over their heads right now, but will it last? His previous stint at Pitt wasn't all that impressive, and Pitt has a fairly fertile recruiting ground.

3- Fitz: He out coaches Ferentz (which isn't all that hard to do), but beyond that he's a bit overrated. Has basically maintained what Gary Barnett and Randy Walker built, but I think he's already taken Northwestern about as far as he's going to.

4- Ferentz: Like Hayden, he lost good coordinators and replaced them with lesser ones. He's paying the price for it now. Will never understand why he de-emphasized aggressive special teams plays (somewhere, Sean Considine is grimacing)

5- Lovie: Illinois has been looking a little better on defense. He's not going to win championships there, but Lovie may get the Illini back to regular bowl games.

6- Claeys: I don't see him as a great recruiter or game day coach. He's a stop gap--better than Tim Brewster, worse than Glenn Mason.

7- Hazell: Just horrible. Remember when Purdue and Tiller's offense were actually feared? For this guy to still have a job speaks volumes about Purdue's commitment to winning--the end zone at Ross Ade isn't the only giant sinkhole in the Boilers Athletic Department.

Ferentz has no ability at judging coaching talent. I also think his high salary may hinder his ability to go after proven assitants. I am not an Iowa fan so I don't know their program that well.

However he hasn't gone after any proven assistants yet for whatever reason.

Nah, seems to be a Nebraska thread so I'll just stay out of it. Too many variables in "ranking coaches", but you seem awfully optimistic about yours given he hasn't really won anything yet.

"My" coach is Ferentz, unfortunately. And yeah, the list is subjective (psst...that's kinda how the whole "message board" thing works).

What is an assitant?

Is that what you Nebraskans refer to as your sister/wife?

Hahaha what the hell has Riley ever accomplished in the college game!? He's never had a season with less than 4 losses..

58-63 conference record as HC..

Actually one coach has won 56% and the other is 54%. Overall records. Both pretty average I say.

For sure.. however how many conference championships and BCS games for each? Im not sitting here saying Ferentz is god but he's had a better career than Riley!

No doubt he had higher highs with the BCS games. Just ask Gary Anderson how easy it is to win at Oregon State. I'm not by any means saying Riley is better, I just think they might be closer than you think.

Riley's last year they were 2-7 in the Pac-12. He left Anderson with nothing. Might want to try proving your point a different way.

Sinc Kirk Ferentz and Bo Schembechler are the only 4-time Big 10 coaches of the year I'll go with Kirk. Lot of Riley talk on here, I would place him 5th in the west.

Really, I guess that is why Nebbie hired away his D Line coach, KoK was hired away by the Miami Dolphins. And I guess you would have to say that Kirk has been extremely lucky to be a multi time coach of the year, and have a couple big ten championships without having an eye for coaching talent. I will say it takes less of a coach to coach 4 and 5 star recruits then 2 and 3 star recruits. Try again.

Hard to do because several coaches are fairly new. I would love to say Kirk, but fear that is just my eternal hope coming out. He is an above average coach, but has little to no consistency in winning. He appears very consistent in many other areas of coaching, just not his results.

Can't think of a more meaningless honor that being named B1G coach of the year.

Paul Chryst is the best coach in the west.

Urban has lost 1 conference game and he is in his 5th year. 0 coach of the year awards. It's for the feel good story of the year. I don't think Tressel won one either.
