This is a statistical analysis from the new pay site, the athletic. The most interesting part about Iowa was the efficiency in transition. We received an 11 out of 14 rating in transition play, but that was boosted because we run so much. In terms of just transition efficiency, we were actually 2nd worst last year.

The overall offense rankings
1. Purdue
2. Maryland
3. Michigan St.
4. Michigan
5. Iowa
6. Indiana
7. Northwestern
8. Minnesota
9. Wisconsin
10. Penn St.
11. Illinois
12. Ohio St.
13. Nebraska
14. Rutgers

A brief look at KenPom and regarding Offensive Efficiency:

Michigan 4
Purdue 25
Indiana 27
Wisconsin 33
Maryland 41
Iowa 43
Michigan St 58
Northwestern 59
Ohio State 60
Minnesota 77
Illinois 123
Nebraska 157
Penn State 168
Rutgers 231

It's a different subject, as this is the entire OE, not just transition. But makes for an interesting comparison. I'd also point out that we were a very different team as the season went on.

Here's the key to the year, as long as Bohannon stays healthy, Defensive Efficiency according to KenPom:

Wisconsin 9
Minnesota 22
Purdue 23
Northwestern 32
Illinois 35
Michigan St 38
Penn State 52
Maryland 64
Rutgers 69
Michigan 70
Nebraska 77
Ohio State 99
Indiana 104
Iowa 122

Dead last among the B1G. Two things, defensive rebound plays a huge part in this and we should be much better. We were also so very young, and again throughout the season we managed to get better, although inconsistent we had games that showed much promise.

It was our help defense. Our young guys kept getting caught between committing to help, or staying at home. The worst place to be is caught guarding no one...but it's inexperience.

I'm not saying we will certainly reach the top 40. But I think we can. And as deep as we are this year guys better be prepared to play D or they will behind those who are.

And an interesting jump:

2012 Iowa, 206
2013 Iowa, 25

And that was with the addition of Gesell, Sapp, Woody.......so it isn't always a freshman problem. But I think it's fair to say those guys were defensive type players. Like Garza...who is a pit bull on both ends. So....improvement can happen fast!

I think the low transition rating came mostly from turnovers. The TO rate was higher than normal under Fran last year.

The guards should get better at this with more experience. Bohannon and whoever is he backup at PG need to improve in decision making.

Perhaps I'm off base, but wasn't more of the turnover issues related to Jok + Bigs? I thought Boahnnon was decent in A/TO ratio (somewhere in the range of 2:1)?

I agree it should get better, but I think it will be more due to our bigs understanding when to attack the basket, shoot jump shots and kick out to reset.

Of all the Hawkeyes this year I'm feeling Isaiah Moss is going to shock the prognosticators. My thoughts are he is going to explode this season and were it not for all the other options could score 20+ ppg. I think he is going to be that good. Best part though he doesn't have to be for the Hawks to surpass even the most optimistic predictions.

I suspect we improve this year with some stronger finishers, more of Moss, and with our new bigs running the floor and hopefully improvement just due to experience

I agree with this and add that with Cook healthy, sidetracked with a broken finger part of last year, and hopefully a healthy Pemsl, Ryan K in the groove, and Ellingson's continued maturity our offense could be really good......I think Garza could be the missing link along with Ryan K to shore up rebounding and interior defense.

Good discussion. If we just have five guys defending all of the time, we will improve from last year on that end of the floor. Team defense and defensive rebounding are mostly about hustle and discipline. We still are going to have problems with our on-ball defense on the perimeter, but I expect significantly better help defense with a year more experience for the returning players.

Offensive efficiency will depend a lot on shot selection. I agree with the prediction that Moss could step up a lot this year and more consistently show those brief flashes we saw last year. We should start seeing a lot more production around the basket, although that was improving, especially with Cook, late last year. How the new guys will contribute on both ends will be interesting to watch...

Shot selection often improves with multiple capable options shooting from 3 feet.

Having a near 7' player in the post will improve the rebounding and cut down on opposing Guards from attacking the basket, Jok had 84 assists but he also led the team in TO's with 80. JBo avg'd 2.3 apg to 1 TO pg and anything over 2-1 is a good thing, JBo getting 175 assist is being smart with the ball,
Ellingson had 37 assist, 14 TO's for a 2.6 to 1 ratio Ellingson also had 11 steals along with JBo who had 29 steals, it was not the defense that killed Iowa it was TO's as Iowa avg'd 14 TO's pg wish they would show where the other teams stood in TO's, UNCheats lead D1 in rebounding @ 43.5 rpg while Iowa avg'd 38.4 rpg, Iowa avg'd 26.4 DRPG to 12.0 ORPG.

this is where a fully healthy Kriener, Pemsl, Cook and the additions of Garza and Nunge the rebounding will improve as well as the interior defense,

the offense will not be a problem
