This team sucks at it and everyone knows it. Rebounding is positioning and desire. Period. It’s not about having a 7 foot center, it’s not about athletes, and it’s not about having a 270 pound bruiser. It’s all about positioning and desire. Positioning can be taught but if this coaching staff has a weakness, it is they can’t seem to teach rebounding. This is not new. It’s been an on going issue. You can tell by watching that our guys get into poor positions and blocking out is a foreign concept.

Aside from teaching positioning, desire is the other half of the equation. You have to want to own the boards and we don’t have players that have it. Keagan is closest but he needs help and it’s just not there.

I suggest that Fran hire an assistant that can instill the fundamentals and desire into these players.

Rebounding is, without a doubt, an issue this year. To say it has been an ongoing issue is not accurate. We usually don't give up 2nd shots like this year and we usually get quite a few offensive rebounds. The two guys that went to the NBA averaged in the high teens. I agree that rebounding is effort. It's not that hard learn to put a body on someone and screen out. When you stand and look at the shot reflects more about the player.

You've knocked fundamentals but I don't remember a pressing, running team that has as few turnovers as we do. Does the coaching staff get any credit for that?
yes. I'm not sure how the "pressing" part plays into Iowa's turnovers but his team is pretty darn good with the ball so far. 13 per game in the last 3 and less than 7 before that. Only 4 against UVA is a highlight in and of itself! Now back to that rebounding thing...

I was 6’3” with a 40 in. vertical. I led the conference in rebounding 3 years in a row in high school because our coach stressed blocking out. If you didn’t stick your ass into your opponent on every shot attempt, you would be sitting next to the coach on the bench no matter how many points you could score.

This. For those folks who underestimated Joe W., we REALLY miss his 7 boards a game from the wing spot....

We’ve lost because we can’t rebound. I didn’t knock all fundamentals but how can you not understand rebounding?

Look a few posts above. I acknowledged rebounding. You said it is an ongoing issue, implying year after year. That is not true as I said above.

Size definitely helps.

Its not a coincidence this team is struggling more than most Fran teams.

It can obviously be overcome though.

This team has other problems too, lack of desire and bad hands, (it seems like 5 or 6 boards a game get taken right out of their hands.

Frans touch and go method instead of boxing out doesn't seem to work very well at all with this group.

Did someone above say rebounding wasn't a year to year issue? Oh brother! Over the years when Iowa actually does play defense their rebounding lets them down. I hate Izzo but have seen on tv what his practices look like. He puts a premium on rebounding so his team rebounds. Fran pays homage to rebounding and yells like a madman when his team fails (yet again) to procure said rebound. I've seen very little that says he teaches the game with an emphasis on getting boards. Sure he bitches and moans but that isn't the same as preparing his guys.

rebounding is 50% technique and physical tools, 50% effort. I'm sure Iowa is lacking in both areas to get outrebounded by the margins we have in the last 4 games.

Size matters. A 7'1" guy can just go over a smaller defender for offensive boards and, of course, consumes a lot more vertical and horizontal space. The size difference is significantly aggravated that Big Ten basketball is very physical and the smaller guys just get pushed, hipped or shouldered out of the way.

By far our three best front court players are 6'8" ish and pretty skinny. Our center is a slightly taller 6'9" fairly skinny guy. Iowa is going to have to start trapping and pressing from the start and running the big men to death.

Half measures either way don't work.

Garza defnitely was space eater and strong hands to secure the rebound and Weezy was good jumper and strong hands also. The guy replacing Weezy this year is poor rebounder. Even last year's team I think was only getting in mid 60's percentage of defensive rebounds.

You are never going to be able to rebound as well out of a zone---whatever you gain in lower eFG% you more than lose with lower share of defensive rebounds and 2nd shots. This year's group without an anchor center and getting out of position and playing too much zone and flat out beeing soft with the ball has only been getting 50% of the defensive rebounds the last couple games. Maybe we aren't 10 deep if you put in the requirement that a player rebound his position.

Spot on on everything here.

And as far as the zone, they don't gain anything in lower fg% either. It significantly worse.

Between wide open easy looks from 3 and offensive rebounds the zone is just self sabotage.

I can't wrap my mind around why its still happening.

I think you guys highlighted something else about the rebounding-this group needs to pound at the boards much harder. They're small and the system doesn't favor rebounding, but they also have to work harder at getting inside position.

Blocking out and desire are absolutely necessary to rebound well. But so is toughness. You have to be willing to take an elbow to the face, like Luka frequently did. It appears that our front court guys are a little soft, and need to toughen up quickly. They need to have the mentality that when the ball comes off the rim it belongs to them instead of standing around and watching the other team get the rebound. It's difficult to have confidence that this team can become a good rebounding team.

The Big O will mix it up. I think the Big Boy needs more time against the big boys in the Big Ten.

Every damn year I long for the Raveling/Dr Tom/C. Vivian days when rebounding was part of the Iowa basketball brand.

Every year.
