Recent first hand Covid stories

No close friends or family have had it that I am aware of. My youngest son may have had it but he has been unable to be tested despite having been exposed twice by close contacts (teammates). I do have quite a few friend of a friend people who have had it. Probably a half dozen have died with another seriously ill on a ventilator in the hospital. All but one are under 60. I'm not necessarily afraid of it but you just don't know who it is going to have a severe affect on. The person in the hospital right now is a female under 60 in what would have appeared to be great health. Today's update is promising but being on a vent is a hard no for me. It terrifies me. So I will keep being cautious and hoping like hell they figure out better treatments soon.

BIL and SIL in Oklahoma had it. Four kids under 13 living with them and all of the kids tested negative twice and never showed any symptoms. BIL said it was like a 2 day hangover with allergies and SIL said it was a mild cold for a few days with loss of taste and smell for a couple weeks.

A guy died in my uncle's nursing home in Indiana and none of the other residents or staff ever tested positive. They're perplexed as to how he ever contacted it.

My buddy's late-60-some year-old father just got out of quarantine and is back to running his dive bar. Very mild symptoms and claims this was his second run with it. He lives on fried bar food, cigarettes and whatever he feels like drinking. If anybody I know was to die from Covid, I figured it would've been him. He also pops boner pills like they're candy, so if this is a vascular disease, I hope they're looking into the efficacy of viagra for treatment.

My friend’s husband is now hospitalized with pneumonia. Treatment has begun. He’s basically same as me health-wise. This thing is like roulette.

I know about 10 people who have had it. None are family or close friends. 3 of the 10 were hospitalized. The other 7, minor or no symptoms. Of the 3 hospitalized, 1 was over 90, he died. 1 was hospitalized, recovered. The other was hospitalized, ventilated, recovered.

a couple from my sisters church, late 60's and early 70's not great health, both hospitalized and he died.

a guy i work with/see once maybe twice a week in mid 50's, not very good health, went to the hospital and they wanted to admit him. he told them no, said "i know what happens when admitted for virus, you die alone here." was a week before he could get out of bed. his wife test positive for antibodies, but never felt sick.

a friends brother, mid 50's good health, was in the hospital for it. dont know how it turned out.

i dont facebook so i dont really keep up with all of the people i know but dont see very often. i also only interact with a small number of people on a regular basis now, so i dont have a huge sample size of people to draw from.

Work in sales and have had 60+ customers tell me they’ve tested positive. Age ranging from 30s to 70s. Today alone I had 2 tell me they were just getting past their 2 weeks.

One lady mid 50s cancer survivor got it and said it was terrible. At one point she told her husband if I’m this bad tomorrow take me to the hospital. Her husband had no symptoms and never got tested.

Everyone else had mild symptoms. In March/April I would’ve bet money some of these people would struggle terribly. 75 year old. Obese. Diabetic. Wife gets headaches. Husband is achy.
IDK if it has weakened of what. I’m shocked.

I caught it in late July. I was as sick as I have ever been. Really bad headache and body aches for 5 days. Day 6 it got in my lungs and I had a bad cough and couldn’t breath without coughing. I was sick 9 days, lost 20 lbs, and caught pneumonia at the end of my Covid. I’m 33 and in pretty good shape. My wife also 33 caught it from me and was sick for 1 day and lost taste and smell. I actually never lost my taste and smell.

Living in West Des Moines I haven't had a lot of exposure to Covid until recently, 2 of my best friends and their wives (healthy in their 40's)had it in CA. Both said they were lethargic and were scared they were going to die after getting the positive results but they were all fine after 3 days.

This week my kindergartner is doing home school because a classmate has it. That classmate spread it around class and those kids took it home to their parents and siblings that have now all tested positive. The feedback was that the parents lost smell and taste for 2 days and were lethargic for 2 days but fine by the 3rd day.

Yesterday I was in Cedar Falls at a customer and all 3 employees (2 in their 50's and 1 in her 60's)had it, tested positive on Saturday and were all back in the office on Wednesday said they were feeling flu like symptoms last Thursday-Saturday but felt totally fine and back to normal by Monday and were back in the office by Wednesday but keeping guests and visitors out.

Another friend in Mason City had it in August he's in his late 50's Heavy drinker, smoker and over 300lbs, was sick for 3 days and is fine. His Mom is 89 and is bed ridden with Dementia had it and was moved to nursing home and is fine now.

Tuesday while taking some kids to Football practice my son was telling the kids how a kid in our neighborhood has it and one kid said "Our parents had it in June, they were fine though" These are parents weve hung out with pretty much every other weekend since June and had no idea.

Anyone on here have it and had to go to the hospital? I haven't known anyone that has personally. Not wanting this to get political, just seeing what other people are seeing out there.
Friend had it, 30 year old about to finish med school. No known underlying health issues, roughly 6' and 160-170 I estimate.

He got unlucky, lungs filled with fluid and heart was failing him. Went to a cardiac ICU unit and was put on a ventilator. He did recover, which is great! It's been about a month and his breathing isn't the best but it looked like it could have ended much worse.

wow. how do you feel now? Feel 100% recovered?

First level of friends / family know of only a few people who have got it. Was like cold/mild flu for most part. One had loss of taste and all mentioned massive fatigue.

On the next level of friend of a friend or friend of a relative or coworker in company (not office) know of scores who got it and three deaths. The most shocking death was one of a high up manager in our Omaha office who was in great shape, no preexisting conditions, and only mid
50s and yet died within three weeks of getting initial symptoms and positive test.

One other thing I can add is know a pulmonary therapist in town and she told me a month ago their survivor patient load was shocking and scary, as was the damage. So most of those patients in hospital even only getting just O2 have a long road ahead and life changing damage when they get out. Not sure what that number is but I think I have heard about 20 percent admitted die so we may be looking at 800k people with major damage to lungs and other issues, kind of a huge forgotten story.

I know three and they are associates at work. One is the owner and he’s in his 60’s and the other two in their late 20’s.
All were out the requisite time frame, and the worst was one of the kids in his 20’s.

I was sent for a test last week because I was feeling extremely fatigued, but came back negative. That’s it for me.

My wife is attending a virtual funeral service today for a co-worker who died from COVID late last week. Early 60's, had been in the hospital on a respirator for two weeks prior. His wife and son also caught it but fully recovered within a week or so.

Well, not really. Unless the pockets for the larger numbers are about a hundred times larger than the smaller numbers. For example, the odds of a person between the ages of 75/85 dying are 200x greater than someone in their 20’s.

That doesn't change his statement that this thing is like roulette.

Even within the age ranges, some 20 year olds don't ever develop symptoms. Some develop mild cold like symptoms. Some have a flu like illness. Some have severe illness and need hospitalized and some (rare) even die. That is a pretty wide range of experiences and results.

While age and overall health do have some influence no doubt, I think it's fair to say that because this is a novel virus, you just don't know how someone's immune system is going to react.

Again, a roulette wheel has the same chance of landing on two as it does in twenty two. The odds with COVID are wildly different based on age. This is not an opinion, it’s a statistical fact.

The chances of a school aged child dying are 150x lower than someone in their 40’s.

If this is a roulette wheel, The fix is in, big time.

Link to where I was making a literal comparison, one whose sole interest is in comparing death to non-death?

Jeeeezus Mahmoud Abdul Raufing Christ, Art. Shuuuut the ƒƒƒƒƒƒuck up.

I apologize for trying to replace breathless hyperbole with sober facts. I forgot for a moment what is driving the discourse on this subject.

Carry on.

I wonder if there is reason to think a less virulent strain is more common now. I'll have to read.

You were in CF and didn’t holler? Dick move bro.

Again, I am talking about within the same age range itself. You seem to be ignoring some of my posts.

How else do you explain one 20 year old handling it fine and another 20 year old struggling? Not every person who has struggled with this has pre-existing conditions.

Maybe comparing it to roulette isn't the most apt comparison but it seems to vary wildly and that's what I was trying to convey.

Crap shoot. Roulette. Whatever. The damn thing is weird. Because we're still early stages of learning about it. It's a novel virus. And I'm vulgar and some other contemptible stuff.

Ah, well yes, it does vary wildly within individuals within the same demographic. I’m not sure that is particularly unique, though. We just have never paid so much attention to anything like this before.

The comparison is fine. The numbers on the wheel correspond to the variety of outcomes. Art can't see anything beyond death or living as an outcome.

This thread is evidence, to me, that I want to continue to do whatever I can to prevent getting this virus or for anyone else in my family to get it.

I know 6 people that have had it. Two were in ICU. Both survived but it was very dicey for one of them. Others had mild or no symptoms.

I'd be very annoyed to find out friends we have hung out with had it and didn't tell us.

Aunt and uncle died around Memorial Day (both were in early 90's...caught it in separate assisted living facilities). They simply were not strong enough to fight it off.

One of my lifelong best friends passed in late August from it. He was a recent cancer survivor and was still in a weakened state when he caught it. He went from recovering fairly well to not feeling well about 10 days after the derecho hit, to testing positive and being hospitalized, to going downhill very quickly and passing.

He was fairly secluded from the world for the most part - his long term girlfriend tested negative...but is severely torn up about it because they cannot figure out how he got exposed.

I personally know 5 people that have had it. 2 were hospitalized and recovered. 1 is a 47 female with MS. The other was a healthy 24 female. The other 3 had a mild course.

We should all be taking this seriously and minimizing the risks to ourselves and others. This ain’t political and it’s sad to see so called intelligent people on this board and elsewhere spout misinformation.

It would help if the US had a President that cared about all states, not just the Red ones.

My daughter's elementary school will be online for 2 weeks starting Tuesday. Apparently, a kindergarten teacher has covid. Now, 1/3 of the teachers have to quarantine. Edit...in West Des Moines.

I have an aunt who died of COVID 19 in late spring. She was 62 and had co-morbidities that, once the virus hit her hard, there was little hope of survival.

I have a sister-in-law in her 50s without any other known health issues who died of Covid in April.

I have known many other who had the virus without a need to be hospitalized.

My son was the CCA positive case that shut the school down for a day. He had a low fever and felt run down for 2 days. Totally fine day 3.

Jebus...I just found out literally 5 minutes ago, my best friend tested positive - found out this afternoon.

Mid 50's, healthy. Says he has all the flu like symptoms except a fever (so far). Breathing is difficult, a very heavy chest so to speak. So far he is dealing...but just does not feel well at all.

Jebus...my BEST friend.
