Recruiting is disappointing

Looks like Powell is announcing his intentions to attend Houston. We didn't even get a visit. Doesn't look like playing in the Big Ten was as important as he stated earlier. Really liked the young man's tape.

Now Fran has offered Martice Mitchell, he has blown up this summer, Maryland and Minny offered recently. He is getting a lot of top flight offers.

No news on any visits, no news on Xavier's short list, hopes for a Jackson commit are getting dimmer. We have four scholarships and nobody wants to come to Iowa's party. Hope things turn around but not looking too positive.

It's still early in the process.

Xavier is a priority and it looks like Ulis is sitting good with us.

There will likely be some others that come out of nowhere like Nunge did. He didn't visit Iowa until September and committed right afterwards.

I'll wait to judge the class when the dust settles.

I think we'll have a respectable class it just depends if it will be transformative or just solid 3 stars we beat mid majors and low end majors for.

Fran has shown the ability to coach three star kids up, but you need to mix in a few four stars to truly be competitive.

We've gotten some four stars, Joe W, Cook, Garza, Frans sons, so there is talent. The 2020 class is so critical for the future, Watching the Hawks in the winter months, sure helps time go by swiftly. Sheds a little positive light on many a dreary day.

Yep, pool ol' Iowa is just doing things the right way and everyone else is cheating.

Hopefully Coe doesn't steal a kid one of these days.

Sampson does have a track record, hard to believe he is coaching in college anymore. Houston offered a lot earlier and already has 3 and 4 star guards committed. We offered too late.

Maybe I should post these types of threads more often. A better outlook this AM than two days ago.

A Ulis commit would be a nice start to the class, he has been trending up all summer. Good shooter with solid point guard skills.

Making Xavier's top 5 is a positive but Hawks are no closer to a commit than before. Still not a great feeling about him but hopefully his family ties to the Hawks will get them over the top.

Hawks still looking at several SF or shooting guard types. Would be nice to get a visit from one or two of these young men. Walton, Geronimo, Polk, or Madsen.

PF/Center pool is getting smaller. Maybe a Mitchell or Murrell visit? Xavier and a one more would be the ticket.

Ulis, Polk, Xavier and possibly a 4th would be a solid class.

Ulis would be another guard skill set that can get to the rim off the dribble, shoot, and defend as well. Like his lane floater and easy outside shot. To the extent that we’ve been building our group of players that can do all these things, that’s transformative and attractive to other recruits. Plus, he’s another big city player.

Foster, I think, in the end, wants to come to Iowa as a childhood fan. But he’s considering other things (GF) and also leaving the door open to out of state options if the instate rivalry gets too intense. Program basketball pitches aside, that looks to be the crux of it all. His dad may be thinking other things. If you recall, a Duke assistant watched Xavier earlier this summer and they didn’t offer. Read into that what you will. Powell leaning towards Houston could also be a sign that he feels Foster is leaning towards Iowa as well.

A wing player (Jackson/Madsen/Polk) would fit in nicely with the above two to make a program-changing class.

Ulis is not a good shooter at this point. He may get there, but to call him a good shooter now would not be accurate.

Ulis is rated pretty similarly to Toussaint. At this point I am pretty confident that Fran will hit on one of them. I also feel like Berry is more of a CG so we would like take both.

We may suddenly have a ton of guards next year.

Not sure how accurate these stats are, but yeah 25% from 3 is nothing to write home about (although he made 34% as a sophomore supposedly, and nearly 80% from the FT line indicates promise as a shooter)

Watch some of the passes he makes in his YouTube mixtapes and you know Ahron can play. Reminds me a bit of Toussaint in terms of style of play

Great possible start to the class

If Ulis commits, Iowa has certainly upgraded its quickness and ability to break down defenders on the perimeter. It's always a good idea to have three guys who can play PG on the team. Preferably at least one of them can swing to SG. The only possible concern is that our PGs all could be below average outside shooters, which is not the most important skill for a PG IMO. It's too early to say that. On-ball defense should be MUCH better.

Agree that his recruiting is trending towards the possibility of multiple PG skill lineups. But I tend to think that Fran has made shooting a priority in recruiting the last few years. Therefore, form improvement in that skill was likely a factor in offering Ulis and JoeT.

Yeah, unfortunately Connor also isn't much of a shooter, at least not so far. As long as there are other shooters on the team, that isn't a critical skill, especially for guys who can still break down the defense and dish or go to the basket. Guys like JoeW and the bigs should really benefit on offense, and the defense should finally have some guys on the perimeter who can play tough man-to-man defense.

It is funny that some folks believe a player who is not a scorer cannot be very valuable to their team. Every player has a role. And the roles are unique.

Agreed. Unfortunately some fans watch who makes shots, and don't seem to see the rest of the game.

Once again, don’t think Fran offers if Ahron didn’t demonstrate some improved shooting prowess. “It’s been reported that his game improved this spring and summer, catching the attention of high major programs.” “While Ahron lacks the quickness of his sibling, he boasts the size and ability to play both backcourt spots.”

Especially after hearing for 5 years how Fran needs athletic guards who can drive to the basket and are good defenders. Now we got Joe T and Ulis next year who fit the type of players people been complaining about not getting since we had Clemmons and Gesell.

By the way, maybe the recruiting is not so disappointing.

I was really bummed to read that Powell was heading to
Houston, that young man is a rim protector. Then nothing regarding Xavier. What a difference three days makes. Finally a commitment, Ulis is a good get. Looks like we'll only take three so a wing and Xavier would be a very good class. That said, still a ways to go with Xavier and a wing.

Until Fran gets a few guys in the NBA, it will be tough to pull in the top tier recruits.

Then again, winning helps.
