The USA started pool play with a rough and tumble 75-69 win over Brazil. Apparently you can tackle people without fouling.
Brazil was the toughest opponent in their pool, so they have a good chance to win the pool. Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic are the other two. Brazil has a veteran team. Their star center is 35.

I watched this game on ESPN3 as they may be streaming the games. I can see why Lisa likes coaching the UCONN tandem of Stewart & Jefferson. Last night they were far & away the best players on either team.

Any of the Hawk girls hanging out at the games? That'd be some good fun for them, just taking in the ambiance. Having the PanAm coach could only help recruiting; and the last three classes have been pretty well recruited already.

They won game two, 94-55. Tonight is the final pool play game, versus Puerto Rico.

Sounds as though it will be on ESPN2 at 8 CDT. Still don't understand why Puerto Rico has its own team, but OK with it as long as we win. Is anyone who is eligible to play for PR also eligible to play for the US if they choose?

USA wins third game, 93-77. It was a lot closer than that. It got down to a pont before Puerto Rico's 27 year olde guard twisted a knee by stepping on a foot.
Semis are set: USA vs Cuba, Brazil vs. Canada.

USA pulls out a win in the final seconds to advance to the finals. Trailed by double digits most of second & third quarter before a back and forth 4th. Looked like the team was fatigued from the night before as they had no legs on their jump shots. USA's center gave Bluder some attitude in the first half & Bluder put her in her place quickly.

Now guaranteed either Gold or Silver. Play winner of Canada/Brazil on Monday at 7:45 I think.

It will be Canada. They trounced Brazil. Big home court advantage.

Was it Stewart? More info on the confrontation if you have it

USA beat Cuba by 1, Canada beat them by 3.
The gold Nedal Game will be carried on ESPNU, along with ESPN3.

Canada wins 81-73. Kia nurse led Canada with 33 points. She is a guard from UConn. She was the top rated player coming out of Canada the same year as Christina (Christina was #2). Perimeter defense was a problem for USA all tournament. Good showing for Lisa and the team. This was essentially a USA split squad against the Canadian National (Olympic) team.

I thought Lisa's team played like they had never before seen a 2-3 zone. The point guards made horrible decisions all game long. Disappointed in the USA's lack of intensity. Maybe they were just tired. they looked it.

I would agree that fatigue was a factor. 4 of 5 games were close. Canada had easier semifinal but have to give them credit too. No one could stop Nurse in championship game
