Refs are horrible

Iowa complaining about the refs is like Nebraska football complaining about never getting a holding call. At some point you are not getting the calls because you are not good enough to put your opponent in spots they foul you.

Oh, Penn State fouled plenty. They could have been whistled for more. Iowa sat in a matchup zone and let Penn State start heating up from 3, which is one reason they had fouls to give at the end of the half.

Regardless, Iowa is just getting outplayed. But I'm not allowed to talk about Iowa's lack of athleticism until they actually lose, so hopefully that doesn't happen.

What a loser mindset to try blaming this on the refs.

No, sorry. This is about our guys being lazy as f*ck out there, not rebounding, not playing D, and our coach determined to play his boy over others who are better and deserve more PT.

incompetent again
Is there EVER a point where it is not the referees fault? That's just a bullshit, knee-jerk response. Iowa played horribly. Rotten, "let's not guard anyone" first half and then the second half was lets see how poorly we can run an offense.....and YOU wanna blame the friggin; referees?
Cheese with your whine?

Reffing is pathetic throughout college basketball. I thought PSU had some crappy calls there way as well. Just got to accept that officiating sucks all around and move on.

When you blow the review of a goaltending call you are horrible.

Curious about the ruling here - rewatched just now and it was pretty obvious (to me at least) , that the ball ball hit the backboard, then the rim, and then Perkins touched it. At that point, the ball had touched the rim, and was no longer above the cylinder, so it should have been fair game, right?

Am I missing something that doesn't make that an awful blunder by the refs?

edit: did a search function and saw some comments in the game thread.

Calling fouls is hard.. some goaltending calls are even hard. That one was not (again, unless I am missing some esoteric rule), and quite frankly inexcusable.

They blew the call. Looked at it and still blew it

You are a great unbiased source for that info. Thanks for your opinion.

Both can be true. The Pedo St. game was poorly officiated. I think the officials were afraid to call more fouls on the Pederasts because they were calling so many. Iowa picked up some bad calls for the same reason. That's just run of the mill poor officiating not really directed at either team.

Also, especially in the first half, the Hawks played a poor game. More free throws would not have been that significant because Iowa was missing almost everything yesterday. It was simply a game where the officiating, while poor, was not a significant factor in the result.

Now contrast that with a similar game last season. At Nebraska. Iowa played poorly, shot a terrible three point game and ended up losing by 6. But the officials targeted Iowa. Nebraska mauled Iowa physically. Garza probably could have shot 15 free throws himself. Iowa shot only 5 free throws against a vastly inferior team that was outclassed at almost every position. That is a game where the officiating was dishonest and targeted against one team. I'm guessing those officials were gambling cuz Nebraska is even further down the media priority list. So had Iowa shot anywhere close to its normal number of free throws Iowa comfortably wins the game at the line.

Simple. a review of goal tending is only LAST 2 min of the game. They checked the monitor to make sure the time was correct. Call on floor stands. If this was reviewable, it's goaltending. Ball hit board, then rim with no chance of going up or in so any contact after was legal. Hard play to get with the naked eye.

Thanks, that makes perfect sense (at least in the interpretation/application of the rules).

I wasn't listening very closely, but I only heard the announcers say it was a good goaltending call because it hit the backboard first. If they didn't explain it further, the should have you on in a Mike Perira like role!

To me it's more a flaw in the rule than poor officiating here. My understanding is that since it hit the backboard and then was blocked, that's what triggered the goal tending. Nvm that it was below the rim and had no chance to go in.

I didn't think the game was poorly officated - not great perhaps but they weren't impacting the game tremendously one way or the other.

PSU has been a pesky team all season, that + #3 Michigan and #4 OSU on deck + Garza going for the scoring record = classic trap game. Fortunately Hawks knuckled down in the 2nd half and took care of business.

You probably already have, but in case you missed @TRE 12 's post (#32) in this thread

It shouldn't have been goaltending (once the ball hits the rim and is no longer above the cylinder is is fair game), but the refs were only looking to see if the shot got off before the buzzer- they couldn't actually review if it was actually goaltending because it was outside of 2 minutes left in the game.
