  • The net fiscal impact of refugees and asylees was positive over the 15-year period, at $123.8 billion. This means that refugees and asylees contributed more revenue than they cost in expenditures to the government. The net fiscal benefit to the federal government was estimated at $31.5 billion, and the net fiscal benefit to state and local governments was estimated at $92.3 billion.
  • Governmental expenditures on refugees and asylees totaled an estimated $457.2 billion over the 15-year period. Expenditures by the federal government represented 72.5 percent of the total, at $331.5 billion. State and local government expenditures were 27.5 percent of the total, at $125.7 billion.
  • Refugees and asylees contributed an estimated $581 billion in revenue to federal, state and local governments. They contributed an estimated $363 billion to the federal government through payroll, income, and excise taxes, and $218 billion to state and local governments, through income, sales, and property taxes.
  • Including refugees and asylees and their spouses and children under age 18, most of whom are U.S. citizens, expenditures totaled $723.4 billion. Refugees, asylees, and their immediate families contributed an estimated $739.4 billion in revenue to all levels of government.
  • When compared with the total U.S. population on a per capita basis, refugees and asylees had a comparable net fiscal impact.

Only reason to shut these systems down is flat-out racism.
Because they help to close our federal budget gaps.

This is a good thing. It is an indicator that refugees(at least many of them) are becoming productive members of society after coming here, effectively becoming immigrants. This is what you should want rather than having them be a lifetime drain on our county.

This doesn’t mean we should allow unlimited refugees though. We can only support so many new ones at a time until they get to the point that they can support themselves. I’m not going to attempt to claim what that number is.

Both of these responses mirror what my position has always been on this issue.

Secure the border. Make a pathway to citizenship for those here contributing positively to society. Kick out the ones here causing problems.

Not white. Doesn't matter.

The Radical Right has been indoctrinated to hate people that don't have the same skin color as they do.

The path to fixing the problem could have started earlier...when Trump told Republican legislators to not negotiate with the Biden WH.

It's on the record.

The Biden HHS says so.

Let it be said, let it be true...

Wash Post? You fell for it.

The national debt grew by 14.8 trillion dollars between 2005 and 2019.

Tell us, OP, how is saving 123.8 billion (equal to eight tenths of a percent of the accumulated debt) helping to 'close our budget gap'? 🥴

Without the refugees contribution the debt would have grown by 14.924.
That is a larger deficit shortfall.
Hence their contribution helped close the budget gap.

Anyone ever done a "study" of the tax dollars collected by working middle class Americans vs the the benefits received by those same individuals??...if so, I've never seen it...

Yes.

The CBO and Urban Institute found that for many middle-class households, the total value of received benefits often matches or exceeds the amount paid in taxes, particularly when factoring in Social Security and Medicare.
Studies from organizations like the Urban Institute and Brookings Institution suggest that for many middle-class families, lifetime benefits (especially Social Security and Medicare) exceed lifetime tax contributions, making government programs a net gain over time.

Did we factor in how these assholes pay no property taxes, but soak up services much faster than the homeowning citizenry?!!
