Political scientists have known for years that political polarization is largely a one-sided phenomenon: in recent decades the Republican Party has moved to the right much faster than Democrats have moved to the left. As Thomas Mann of the Brookings Institution has described it, "Republicans have become a radical insurgency—ideologically extreme, contemptuous of the inherited policy regime, scornful of compromise, unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence, and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of their political opposition."

The data backing this claim up are pretty solid. The most widely-used measure of political polarization, a score of ideology based on voting developed by Kenneth Poole and Howard Rosenthal, has shown that the Republicans in the Senate and especially the House have drifted away from the center far more rapidly than Democrats. The chart below, taken from the most recent slice of their data released just last month, illustrate this pretty clearly:

What questions or stances does he use as the center? Show me the data, then let's talk

Very scientific graph.

It's plain to see that the "Center" is indicated in the middle. Then two arbitrary colored lines go up and down the "more and less" axis. Then time is at the bottom.

How can you argue the results?

What a nothing answer. The Brooking institution is to the left what the heritage institute is to the right. I asked for the stances they used to determine the center. Still waiting for an answer

Dude use your own eyes and ears. There is no science here only people with an agenda.
Bush ---> do you see him as far right? Are you kidding me? He expanded gov't spending and powers more than Obama and proposed amnesty for illegals before Obama.

Obama ---> far left? Let's see. His mentors: Billy Ayers - Rev Wright - Al Sharpton. During Obama's reign. Legalized drugs - seized 1/6th of the economy - legalized gay marriage - amnesty for illegals - final nail in the constitutional coffin - got rid of our southern border - flys illegals into America on the taxpayer dime - tells the military their greatest foe is global warming - etc. Barry Sotero has checked every box on the extreme left agenda.

Jesus AFLAC - just remember who the fricken OP is and you'll understand that truth is the opposite of everything that comes out of his damaged brain.

I am very curious to witness the exact moment that conservatism merges with fascism in this country and they become one. It is coming as the loony right becomes more and more unhinged with each passing day.

From perspective both parties have been moving right on real policy. I'm sure the minority rights issues are the bulk of the left's influence in the D party. But on all the real dollar issues cons are winning with both parties. That cons seem so hopeless and distressed is either a clever ploy or evidence of their mental condition.

What makes you think that didn't happen long ago?

Every year we spend more money, every year we have less freedom, the social issues( except abortion) is moving left. I am not sure where you all this rightward movement.

QUOTE]
Fred earlier posted and provided stats that the country was becoming more socially liberal. Doesn't this post contradict that one? Or, was is that Fred's intent?[/

Tax, labor, trade, investment and military policy is all moving as conservatives like and has been for 30+ years.

Abortion or gay weddings are hardly real issues that matter to the health, security and wealth of the nation. If cons actually beloved what they say they do, they would want the government out of those decisions too.

@INXS83

My intent was to educate you on how to use the quote function. Looks like I failed miserably in both this thread and the other one.

No Jackboots and they aren't really into leather in public. Far as I know. But I think that would be a good look for them.
Ferguson was pretty Jackboot like. Leather is hot and heavy, but I too like the look. Ever go up to Chicago for IML?

I don't go to Chicago much anymore. Unless someone pays me and the money for travel has dried up.

I'll try to edit. This post seems to contradict your previous post about America socially moving more left of center.

My title is probably confusing for this thread. This thread is more for the politicians for each party whereas my thread about people being more socially liberal was for the American people.

From my OP in this thread

Utter nonsense. And it's ironic that the same poster has another thread about how the country is moving left.

That is not very sophisticated thinking. The former was about general attitudes about social issues. This is about policy points held by representatives that only need to appeal to the tiny slice of the electorate that votes in primary elections.
