Gov. Kim Reynolds failed to document the appointment of a district court judge by a mandated deadline in June and some attorneys are saying it's a slipup that has cast doubt on the judge's authority to make rulings.

Under the Iowa Constitution, Reynolds had until June 21 to pick a judge for the eastern Iowa 6th Judicial District from two names submitted by a judicial nominating commission.

She says she told her chief of staff she'd chosen attorney Jason Besler that day but there is no proof and Besler wasn't called until four days later. Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady says he takes her word that she made the verbal appointment.

Guy Cook, an attorney who served on a state judicial nominating commission, says Besler's appointment could create problems if someone who appears before him challenges his authority.

Gary Dickey, an Iowa lawyer who served as former Gov. Tom Vilsack's chief attorney, says he plans to ask Cady to ratify the appointment to avoid such a challenge.

I still haven’t forgiven Jason for scheduling his wedding on the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. The ceremony was right in the middle of Iowa’s second round win over Arkansas that sent Dr. Tom’s final Hawkeye team to the Sweet 16.

There was a small tv in one of the offices downstairs at the church and as soon as the bridal recessional cleared the exit door, about five other guys and myself literally ran downstairs to catch the end of the game.

She's such an unqualified public official that it's almost comical. She may be a wonderful person when she's not making decisions that can affect millions of Iowans, but her incompetency cannot be questioned.

Pleading ignorance, as in the case of Mr. Jamison, is no excuse for being out of touch.

Hubbell needs to go full negative campaigning against her. Highlight her blunders and her protection of sexual abusers.

Accidental… Governor. She was meant to be a prop. I disagree that Hubbell needs to go negative, unless you mean simply focusing like a laser on her record as governor. It's been pockmarked by blunders. Simply point out that the duties of the job are beyond her abilities. She was county official who stumbled into the state house by being a Republican in a part of the state where Jesus Christ couldn't win an election as a Democrat. Then, Branstad plucked her from the back bench to protect his right flank, and to guarantee evangelical support.
She is feckless, and ineffective as governor. Focus on that.

If asked to be honest, I imagine the GOP would agree that she's in over her head as Gov.

Part of the blame is with the Dems, tho. They haven't mounted a real threat to Republican power. Until rural Iowans realize the Republicans are juggling the State's finances to cater to corporate interests at the expense of education and health services, the GOP will remain in control.

Quality of life ratings, you know. Iowa values.:p

The Reynolds attack ads against Hubbell are so disingenuous.

She attacks him for his time with Younkers. Never mind they increased profits and total workforce.

She attacks him for his minimal years of tax returns he’s released yet fully supported Trump (yes, she was only Lt. Gov at the time).

She had one ad touting her signing a bill for mental health funding, yet everyone with a modicum of knowledge understands she’s complicit in the drastic decrease in available mental health services.

She signed a bill that if it survives court challenges would almost completely eliminate a woman’s right to choose.

She’s absolutely pathetic.
