Recently snagged an AR 10 in 22-250. Looking for a scope that is not super high end but will be bright and clear even at dusk for coyote hunting. Any advice or experience? Stole the gun for 474, thinking about spending 300-450 on the scope

Vortex in whatever size you want. You are going to need a shit ton of glass to catch light at night. Never tried it but super interested in what you find. After dealing with the Vortex warranty process It will take a minor miracle for me to buy anything else. It's good shit, at a good price, and if anything happens they just ask you send whatever part or piece of the product you still have back, with a provided shipping label, and you get the new replacement ASAP.

Less zoom more ability to grab light would be my focus. If you pull this off I'll build one, I'm looking for a way to kill coyotes that doesn't involve night vision. I'm considering trapping, but apparently learning how to trap coyotes is like learning to golf on Augusta.

*Also, didn't ever think about. 22-250 being a long stroke and needing the 10 platform.

Yup, I’m excited. Dusk will be my limit.. until thermals get cheap

I read a study a few days ago where they tracked a coyote from "birth" to 3 years old and in that time they confirmed the pack had killed atleast 19 fawns.

I went the other way due to space and property design. I'm building my trapping skills and going to see if I can trap a few.

( I have thought of trying to kill one over bait, from a deer stand, on a full moon, with a bow........ )

Whatever you do, if you take it to Scheels to mount the scope, make sure they don't mount it 90 degrees off. Had that happen to me this fall. Went to sight it in and adjusted up/down and my next shot hit the same vertical line but four inches to the left. Bro in law looked at the scope and just laughed.

I’ll mount it myself. That’s an unfortunate thing that you had happen

I think these are the best value optic available right now for what you're describing. Put one each on the boys coyote guns and they're really solid. Youngest and I went out Monday evening and even 30 mins after dark you could still see thru it plenty clear enough to shoot.

Make sure it doesn’t alter some of the colors. You want one that keeps orange vivid and easy to spot.

Mounted this Vortex Strike Eagle about a month ago and purchased on-sale for $399 after Christmas. So far, no issues to report.

Bidding on a 3-18 strike eagle…I’ll take it to 450

I tend to go with Zeiss optics for most of my rifles, but I threw on a Scheel's branded scope on my 30-30 and it's been surprisingly good.

A few years back, I had a Pentax Lightseeker on a 30-06 and it was fantastic for the money but you really can't go wrong with your Leopold, Vortex, etc..

Here's one:

Found a vortex strike eagle 4-24x50 EBR-4 MOA illuminated reticle. Only $417. That seems super cheap. My concern is target aquisition with 4x...but it's not that much different that 3x. Any thoughts on that?

50 is a good size tube right? That seems big and would grab light. 4 MOA is going to be a fairly "large" dot.

I think EBR-4...is separate from the MOA.. the dot looks small
keep me posted man, I would love to see you be successful with this, especially if you figure out a way to maximize effectiveness in low light hunting.

Wife went to bed early last night and I stayed up having an extra whiskey. I built out a 45-70, bolt, suppressed, night vision, rig that I think I could SMASH coyotes with on my property. The problem is everything will be CCQ and I don't want to fire a live supersonic bullet 300 yards from my neighbors house at 2 am.

So awesome…. I went last night in NW Iowa. Didn’t see any but the FoxPro was singing along. I only have a Savage.17 caliber. Hope you get setup soon!

When you say "night" are you talking dusk or night night. I think i have a misconception all coyote hunting is done at "night".

I would have laughed at this 15 years ago, but now I’m totally with you.

I met a guy who works at Vortex and his job is basically to beat the hell out of scopes in the testing process. They’re about as bomb proof as it gets, and if something does happen, they’ll make it right. Their glass is also quite good for each price range. Reticle options leave a little to be desired.

Purchased a Vortex Strike Eagle 4-24x50, with AR rings. MidwayUSA for the win. The scope was only 299. Hope to have my set up put together next weekend. Hopefully my coyote call comes in and we get some February snow

I totally understand your reasoning to be conservative on the spending……I bought the FoxPro for $129 from Cabelas. Hoping it turns out to be a good decision.
