Right now - 5 to 16 percent of all McDonald’s ice cream machines are broken down...

Crazy. Sounds like what Mercedes has been doing for decades. Need your tire changed? Better bring it to us. Only we have the secret hubcap key. Smart and shitty art the same time.

OMG my (ex) son in law used to go out of control ballistic over every single McD’s machines always always being “broken” when it was clearly obvious that the employees never wanted to maintain or clean them.
Others have talked about it and you have to wonder why the heck corporate didn’t do anything to address it with franchisees.

I worked at McDonald’s during high school/college over 35 years ago.

the machines were not as complicated back in the day but they were Taylor machines and separate machines were needed for ice cream and shakes. Back in those days the machines were torn down and cleaned every night. You replaced the ice cream solution with sanitizer and eventually just water to make sure everything was ready for next day. The opener had to reassemble the machines. It was an art form to get them working well the next day. O rings lubricated ‘just so’. Blades engaged in the ‘sweet spot’.

the picture of the parts brought back some good and bad memories.

I still can make perfect soft serve ice cream cones from a machine. I make them at Casey’s once in a while and the only thing stopping me from a foot tall perfect cone is the tray at bottom of machine. The workers say things like “damn, that thing is a monster and good enough for a commercial”.

Reason #1 not to get a McFlurry.

Sounds like "the man" will win another victory over innovators. This story reminds me of the legendary theft of the windshield wiper device also developed by a small inventor.

It honestly amazes me that McDonalds is still as relevant as it is today. There are so many options in the fast food and drive-thru industry than ever before. And almost all of them have better customer service and better quality. The very few times I go to a McDonalds, it is slow, dirty, and the quality is crap. Granted, that's like once or twice a year but still.

Power of incumbency and name recognition.

Yea, but eventually that has to start to fade. Especially with the food snobbish Millenials and Generation Z. I mean there are an amazing amount of options for fast food and when I talk to my niece (no pics) and nephew who are both high schoolers, their friends all go elsewhere.

I'm convinced it must be 40-somethings who remember it from their youth. I feel like McD's glory days was in the 80's and 90's. Eventually, I suspect it goes the way of Pizza Hut. Still around but barely relevant.

My 20-something kids get their breakfast stuff pretty often.

Kwik Star is much faster and an easier stop IMO. Grab what you want including grocery items fresh fruit and be gone.

McDonald’s involves ordering and waiting and waiting.

imo McDonald’s should buyout Kwik Star or Casey’s and start selling McDonald’s items in the hot case. Seems like a no brainer.

It irks me to no end when I go to MacDonalds and order fries but can't get a chocolate shake to dip them in.

Thank you for sharing, that was a great read. I remember hearing/reading about the FroBot and thinking that would never work, interesting how it led them down this path

You know, I have had a toddler in the family almost without a break since 2008, so I have visited McDonald’s consistently for over a decade. I have never encountered the oft discussed broken ice cream machine.

You mean the store that sells Happy Meals? Yes, if you have kids you know the Happy Meal restaurant.

I’m a DQ or Twistee Treat person well before I even consider McDonald’s for ice cream.
Matter of fact, don’t think I’ve had McD’s ice cream in 25+ years. Probably longer.

When my daughter turned 8 she decided she didn’t want happy meals any more. I asked her what she wanted instead, she said a cheeseburger, small fries and a chocolate milk, but NOT a happy meal.

This isn't something that McDonalds is alone in doing. There have been a bunch of stories recently about farmers who buy hugely expensive machinery, and are then beholden to the manufacturer to service the complex machinery, and it's secretive code.

It's my firmly held belief that employees hate cleaning the ice cream machines and they therefore are always "broken."

Read an article a few years ago about old John Deere tractors going for big money because they were old enough were people could still fix them themselves.

Interesting and surprising sidenote from the franchise rental lease article link inside that article, "Average operating income after accounting for all those expenses rounded out to a take-home of just $154,000 per year for a single franchisee".

Yikes! That can't be right can it? I don't think the headache would be worth it.
