Riley Mulvey appreciation thread

Talent is great, but a little talent combined with tremendous effort is what I truly savor. Kingsbury, Brauns, Mulvey . . . I'd get after it with those guys any day of the week. It's a pleasure seeing guys who've been tethered to the bench for years come out and show what they're made of. Congrats to those three and the Hawkeye team in general for an entertaining effort that showed what college sports is still all about . . . at least for me.

they played smart and they played hard.

0 minutes in the 1st half for Riley; 15 minutes in the 2nd half. Good for him.

What a game for him, coming off the bench, in Iowa's 85-79 win over Washington.

He took a HUGE charge, that wiped 2 Husky points off the board.

His stats:

15 minutes (all in the 2ND HALF)

3-5 (60%) FGs
3-4 (75%) FTs

9 Points
1 Defensive Rebound
1 Steal
big key there is ONE rebound.

That layup was pretty athletic. I was surprised!
Also someone was making a big deal about only 1 rebound. This game wasn't good in that respect, but I think most if not all games he has played in he gets 2 or 3 rebounds in 3-4 minutes.
When watching Mulvey, you will see how he screens his guy out of the rebound, not allowing their top offensive rebounder any second chances is critical, as those #5’s have killed Iowa, as did oregons 7 footer, who dominated th 6’ 8” Brauns and Dembele

Yes, I'll get grilled but I don't think Mulvey is materially worse than Adam Woodbury was at making layups. Both miss or missed a lot of bunnies. Mulvey is more athletic and can block shots. . That reverse layup Mulvey did using the rim to prevent a blocked shots is something Woodbury couldn't have done because Woodbury only had around a 12 inch vertical.

What Mulvey lacks is knowing how to play positional defense and post scoring moves---those things come with more playing time. He would have been a big help or at very least no worse than the alternatives in the blowout losses at USC, UCLA, Wisconsin.

Braun, Mulvey, and even Dimbele are all playing at extreme level of effort, which is refreshing. I agree Kingsbury played hard/okay, but playing time is a good development tool and should be doled out strategically. What is the upside in Kingsbury playing 29 minutes? None. Though it is a good story to see a Walkon/son of former Hawk get some good playing time at home.

All of the "back up" big men have been playing better than we thought they could. I am especially happy for Mulvey, who was awful his first couple of years, but is now showing that he can contribute and make winning plays. Dembele is finally starting to get it on the boards. He even threw down a dunk with some authority. Brauns plays with nonstop aggression, and the team needs more of that.

I can only recall Mulvey missing one “bunny” this season. But then he has only missed 6 shots all season making over 70% 0f his shots taken. Dembele on the other hand concerns me finishing at the rim.

The charge that he took was extremely brave. A lot of times players just get out of the way, because they know refs tend to ignore charge calls on dunks, leaving you "posterized". Hell, go look at a Ja Morant top 10 dunks on youtube and half of them should've been charges.

Dembele has been pounding the offensive boards the past few games, which is great to see. His rebound/min must be very high. He has shown improvement shooting near the basket, but still needs a lot of work in that area. I still think he should dunk the ball more often than not, if he gets it inside 5-6 ft. Let the defender prove he can stop it.

Yes Dembele has been better rebounding. His per 40 rebounding is 8.5, Mulvey 9.5, and I think Owen was 10.1. Brauns strangely has been 9.2 for his career but only 5.4 this season. I think Dembele lacks the “hops” to easily dunk from a standstill. When he came here I thought he could be another Cook but just doesn’t have that explosion.

Just needed a chance.
Would love to know the answer why Fran redshirted him last year while evidently not intending to play him this year. No one will ever know if playing him would have changed the course of this years team had he played along side Freeman allowing Iowa to keep either Riley or Owen in position to rebound. Hedging Owen on the 3 point line removed him from rebounding position more then I would have liked.

No longer try to figure out FM’s logic with his game strategies. It’s a painful watch anymore.

What #44 could have been, we’ll never know. It’s fairly obvious he’s finally having fun and after polishing one of the last chairs on the bench with his backside for the last 4-5 years………. good for him.

Translation : there is little logic with Frans player rotation strategy
Conclusion ; of after years of watching, and you have no idea what his strategy is, then there’s probably no strategy, just snap decisions off the cuff decision making

Exactly. Fran stuck with the 3 guard line up way too long. The Wisconsin game exposed us. I like Riley, I hope he sticks around another year and gets a fair chance for once.

He threw one down with force against Washington, but hasn't done it much. He is not a high riser, but positioning and want to are the most important parts of rebounding. He is strong enough to get where he wants to go if he really wants to.

I also recall Dembele dunking on a break in one of the pre-conference games. Not saying he can’t dunk but just don’t think he has the ability catch the ball low and go up and dunk like Brauns and Mulvey can.

If playing these guys results in more wins, then I'm all for them seeing the floor more. McCaffery does seem to have blind spots when it comes to his little played individuals, when practically everyone sees their upsides, but they seem relegated to the pine.

I thought you Moline guys had inside information and know all the answers... But I will agree with you that Fran's small lineup has gotten us beaten on the boards badly & cost us games. Needs more of a balanced lineup.

i think you mean that Iowa needs a more balanced coach. I told you last summer that Riley should see more minutes, but was rebuked by you and others saying Riley was worthless.

As far as Brock is concerned there are always better and more experienced players that Fran could've or should have recruited to Iowa that could have had more playing time in front of Brock, who is still a sophomore and still learning to play Big Ten basketball.

The reality is Fran has never found that kind of player in the portal, from high school, or instant legibility transfers to move the needle to produce the caliber of play to elevate Iowa to where we would like them to be.

Brock is only the second true point guard Fran has ever recruited to Iowa beside Bryce Cartright in Frans 1st and 2nd year.
Has the play of Brock been up to Big Ten standards, the answer is not every game. inconsistent is a one word answer that unfortunately along with the inconsistent play from all the others Hawks, contributed to the season we have now, but Brock became the Hawks starter by his play and work ethic during the summer and before the start of the season.

The 1 thing that Thelwell does have over Brock is experience and 3 inches, but at the start of the season, Fran didn't think that was enough to beat out Harding, but I will give him his props that he may be the best guard that Fran has brought to Iowa, but again it, wasn't enough to move the needle to make Iowa a better team.

The lack of NIL money is a negative, but even before the NIL era, Fran focus on recruiting was always recruiting developmental players, lots of forwards and not enough true centers or true point guards. That in my opinion is where Fran failed Iowa. It's time for him to go.....
