Riley Mulvey reclassifies to 2021

So, a guy who wasn’t expected to contribute as a freshman in 2023 is going to join the team in 2022 as a 12th grader? Not sure this is newsworthy. He’s isn’t ready to bang down low in the big 10 matching up against the Cockburns and Garzas of the world. Not sure he even matches up against Ogundale at this point, who has 2 years on him. Bigs like this take time to develop, a la Les Jepsen.

Definitely a point worth noting but I think you missed a couple of things. First, I don't think Riley is a 12th grader. I think he was going to an academy next season so he'll be a legit freshman. Second, Riley's development curve starts pretty high, already a top 100 player with a huge frame. Of course, like all incoming freshmen, he could fall flat on his ass as a player.

His video is very impressive although not voluminous (like the Murrays). Riley is far more advanced than Leslie was when arrived on campus.

Chauncey Leslie?
Les Jepsen. Not sure where DDawg got Leslie 🤣

You gotta know your history boys. Leslie Burnell Jespen, the comparison to Riley above. A 7' center from Bowbells ND, played at Iowa-George Raveling's last recruit. Did some time in the NBA. That guy. So clumsy as a freshman it looked like he would catch his toe on the lines painted on the court.

His nickname was Lester. No one except maybe his mom called him Leslie. Isn't that right, Mrs. Jepsen?

😉

I'd prefer we get Chauncey Leslie back....

Chick's called him Leslie. One day Randy Larsen, or maybe Mo, and Les stopped at my house on 8th Street, WDM. I have a little buddy that was about 5'6" at most. Watching him and Les play basketball was hilarious. Les did not jump over Kirk like Connie Hawkins did Paul Simon but damn near as funny.

And what would you have said about Luka 4 years ago? By the way Luka won't be in the BIG next year, and not sure Cockburn will either, so no biggy....

I'm not sure about your math here. Mulvey was a 2022 recruit that is graduating this Spring so he can join the Hawks in 2021. Tom stated he's older for his class as he's already 18.

Luka Garza started as a freshman and was listed at 6'10" 230 in his recruiting profile. Mulvey was listed at 6'11" 240 at the time he committed. Physically I think he fits pretty well with most of the B1G Big's. Just my semi educated opinion, but If it's Mulvey vs Ogundele I think Mulvey starts. Josh came in pretty raw by his Sr stats, and he was definitely overweight when he arrived on campus.

It will be interesting to see how this storyline develops. The Garza-Nunge duo never worked out as Fran hoped due to JN's injuries, but now he has another big duo to develop. Probably a coin toss at this point, but I don't think Josh will be as much of a project as people think. Had this past season of conditioning, practicing against Garza, and traveling with the team to get acclimated.

It's sort of the Myles Johnson vs. Nate Reuvers frames with Josh and Riley.

I think the Big O and Mulvey will make a nice 1-2 punch at center, but I would prefer to have an upper classman like Robbins ahead of them. I could see Big O redshirting next year and Mulvey playing behind Robbins. But Iowa has to bring Robbins in before that even becomes a discussion.

The 2021 season just ended. He’s going to join that team for the awards banquet?

Luka Garza is the greatest Iowa basketball player of all time and 2 time National player of the year. You’re comparing this guy to Garza’s freshmen performance? How about comparing him to a typical freshmen center at Iowa? Might get a more realistic view. A recent example might be Kriener (3 points as a freshmen) or Ogundale 1 point as a freshmen).

The Big loses a lot of their big men next year, it won’t be as physical. Garza and Robbins gone, I’m assuming Cockburn goes pro. Woodbury did all right defending as a true freshman.

I’m excited for the opportunity to compare him to Luka Garza and be remarkably saddened that he never becomes a consensus player of the year. In fact, he already disappoints me.

I read somewhere last night that F McC has not landed a highly ranked recruit not his sons in some time. Other than the obvious, ESPN has Riley graded 83 and a 4*. Last season a grade of 83 placed a kid between 73 (highest 83) and 87 (lowest 83) in the ESPN top 100. This is a huge gain and coming in next year at least provides a some hope at center. Completely changes the outlook for next season.
You think ESPN is accurate at all? Seem to be the worst to me...

Mulva is just 2,307 points from #1 on the Iowa All Time Scoring List and just 2,614 points from #1 on the B1G All Time Scoring List

All of the recruiting sites have their strengths and weaknesses. ESPN has the largest data base and the largest number of scouts and analysts. Their downside is one of the reasons I typically rely on them, its a political site so Iowa guys are frequently underrated or down graded after committing. Limits expectations.

All the services have strengths and weaknesses. Like ESPN, Rivals heavily weights films. Some of the other services heavily weight camps and AAU coaches, which I think is very political and a possible small sample. Rivals is a little to tight with the fourth star leaving an even larger field of 3 stars-kind of hedging bets.

The important thing is to find a service and stick with it year to year so you have similar metrics.

How is he defensively? Shot-blocker?

Defense is his strength, reportedly. The videos show a decent shot blocker that fills a lot of space. His HS coach says he's the middle linebacker of the defense, directing plays, identifying "holes" in the defense that could give up open shots, etc... Riley sounds more like Woody with some offense than Luka with better defense.

Kind of off topic but anybody know what Woody is up to these days?

I think Woody is still in the G League playing for Grand Rapids.

He averaged 6 blocks per game.

EDIT:
*So, this might not be the current stats....its a little confusing (for me) with the reclassification if these are last years stats? Maybe not, maybe two years old:

Mulvey, a 6-foot-11, 230-pound center from Rotterdam, N.Y., attended Albany Academy for the past two years. As a sophomore last season, he averaged 12.0 points, 12.4 rebounds and 6.0 blocks for the Cadets.

I'll be shocked if he's not WAY ahead of Josh O. athletically coming in. Partly because Josh got here late, had alot of baby fat to lose, AND most importantly because he'll most likely have the opportunity. I have NO doubt if Josh had to play more meaningful minutes last season he would have progressed by the end of the season considerably but with Luka holding down the fort Fran wasn't forced to throw him into the fire.

Iowa has a better shot at Rebraca right now then Robbins. Many believe Iowa leads for Rebraca. I would take Rebraca on the spot. The 5 could then be played by Rebraca, Mulvey, Ogundele and Murray (in small ball lineups). Murray and Rebraca could also split time at the 4. If Weiskamp comes back Iowa would compete for a top 6 spot in the B1G and another trip to the dance.

Woodbury info:
The Pistons began their in-market training camp on Wednesday with several players from their G League affiliate participating, according to Rod Beard of the Detroit News (Twitter link). Tre’Shawn Thurman, Tra-Deon Hollins, Adam Woodbury, Khalil Iverson, and Craig Sword all played with the Grand Rapids Drive this season.

I can't believe he is still kicking around BB.

I’m still wanting both Robbins and Rebraca , expecting Weezy to leave . Then the following year our front court will be good and with Tyler Nickel, Schutt, Bowen, or King I’d be quite happy though I’d still think Filipowski would be a great fit too. Nice to dream a little this time of year. Then dream a bit more and get Omaha Bilew and Pryce Sandfort the following year

The recruiting class of 2022 would start playing college BBall in the 2022-23 season. By reclassifying Mulvey is now in the 2021 class, which suits up for the 2021-22 season. There is still BBall to be played in 2021.

Where did I say Mulvey was the next Garza? I compared their size as incoming freshmen. I think we take a significant step back if either Mulvey or Ogundele start. Fran has had several freshmen Big's make the ALL-B1G Freshman team though. I don't think that's a coincidence.

IMO the early offer for Mulvey means he was much farther up Fran's target list then the other recent Big's you cited. IIRC Ogundele was offered after we missed out on Foster.

If no more big men come to Iowa then it's probably going to be something like:

Keegan (and/or Kris?) 15 to 20 per game
Josh O, 10 to 15 per game
Mulvey, 5 to 10 per game

The lineups with Keegan or Kris at center might be explosive in transition, but pretty suspect defensively against the B10s big men. Foul trouble will likely be an issue next year unless another big signs.

I don't see any Woody stats for 21'.....his g league career ppg before that was around 5 or so....seems like time to move on to something else unless $35K minimum to play B-ball + roadie chicks is fun. Come to think of it, it does sound fun for guy in 20's.

Uthoff is a 38-39% 3pt shooter, 15ppg guy... Guy can shoot and has skills, but I suppose like most Iowa guys he can't make it in NBA because he can't play good enough defense.

Mulvey reclassifying makes me think the most likely outcome for Fran is to do nothing and bank the schollies. Mulvey looks like he can protect the rim and JoshO is wide body---Iowa will likely be sub 0.500 B1G next year with JoeW likely gone...I think the Serbian from Dakota would be a great pickup and would tip the scale to maybe NCAA tourney team if JoeW also returns, but I doubt Fran can close the deal because his track record for spring actions is barren.

Robbins comes if he really has to move closer for family reasons---would be great pickup too, but probably not happening.

Interesting. Don't think it makes a difference for next year but will help in his development.
