Riley Mulvey

It may have been a bit of an exaggeration but Lukas ability to get shots off from weird launch angles by just moving his arms away from shot blockers without moving his body is something I've never seen anyone besides Bird do.

Hes clearly not on Birds level of creativity but I couldn't think of another comparison.

Luka wasn't just making great post moves he was consistently throwing up crazy looking off balance shots that no one else makes.

My point was that Garza was way more than just hard work. He had unteachable instincts to get shots off and touch to make them.

Thats why I don't think its fair to start saying things like "if he just worked as hard as Garza" because the results aren't going to be the same even with all the work in the world.
See Brad Miller as a possible NBA career model.

Maybe, but Miller could play defense and had no where nearby the offensive talent.

Ennis Kanter with a jump shot is Lukas most optimistic projection in my opinion.

I certainly wasn't comparing Luka to LB in regards to how good he would be in the nba.

I think Luka will end up in Europe and LB is a top 5 of all time even with a degenerative back.

Miller was a much better passer than Luka. Other than that Luka is a far better offensive player. And he has an inch or so on Miller.

But none of that matters. The only trait that will decide whether Luka sticks in the league or not are whether his feet will play in perimeter defense

I think if he could get to close to %50 3pt shooting teams might accept his lack of defense.

But generally I agree, defense will be what probably lands him in Europe.

One other possibility is that he stays around a %40 3pt shooter and poor defender but a teams sees added value in his post game as a way to counter opponents that want to play small 5s.

This could be valuable in a playoff scenario as a way to screw up the opponents rotations.

Interesting. Dickinson was who I thought of when watching Mulvey's videos.
There are similarities, but Riley looks quicker. Dickinson is stronger but Riley can possibly get there, too. Riley seems like a quicker leaper. If Dickinson sticks around this could be an interesting matchup when Riley is a sophomore and Dickinson is a junior.

If he performs at a level close to Dickinson's past year I think Iowa fans should be thrilled.

I need to clarify my earlier post. Riley may be quicker but Dickinson is so much stronger and more polished that it wouldn't be even close to a matchup at this time. Riley would have to get considerably stronger and craftier to even come close to Dickinson within 2 years. Not even sure it is possible but I would like to see the matchup in 2 years. I am not sure how Big O will do against someone like Dickinson next year. Bull vs bull, it would be interesting, but Dickinson is so polished. He'll also be 21 before Iowa plays MI again. So should Big O.

How did he reclassify? Did he have enough credits in high school to get in to Iowa. Also, just wondered how old he is. I can't find any info and his hawkeye BIO has NO INFO???

He probably had enough credits to graduate early. My three youngest kids could have graduated a year earlier than they did, and all would have had college credit by doing so. My oldest son had enough college credit when he set foot on campus to be a sophomore.

ESPN has Riley classed as a midlevel 4* before he moved up a year and their analytics stroked out.

I think this kid is going to be a very good player. Getting a Woody like guy on D that can also use very long arms to block shots. Has low post moves similar to Acie. Three years from now Hawk fans will be happy with Riley.

Wow, that’s quite the body transformation in such a short period of time. From a rail to a hulkster. Yeah Riley! He’ll be able to hold up in the physical B10 I do believe.

I think Hawk fans will be very happy with Riley a lot sooner than 3 years from now. Riley has some skills and will definitely be an asset. I’m excited about the versatility of this roster.

2 years isn't a short period of time for 17 to 19 year olds

the photo of him on left is from his unofficial visit in October 2019, he will turn 19 this October 2021.

I said before he reminded me of Meyers Leonard but didn't think he'd already look like the hammer nba version of him.

That sounds good and I sincerely hope Riley turns out to be a diamond in the rough. What I am looking for in Riley is the work ethic. Luka became who he was from hard work in the off season. If Riley has something close to Luka's level of commitment to improve, then I am looking forward to watching him perform on the court.
I'm not going to compare any future hawks to Garza. I think thats fools gold, and not fair to the new kids. I think we'll be pleased with RM and JO but have no expectations we'll see another Luka. now if that happens , we are truly blessed, and hopefully we get more out of it this time....

I'm not suggesting Riley is the next Luka. What I want to see from him is becoming the best Riley Mulvey he can be. This is why I mention the importance of having a strong work ethic.
