As you know, Iowa's last Rose Bowl championship came in 1959. But what you may not know is that one of that year's No. 1 hit songs was Johnny Horton's "The Battle of New Orleans." So, naturally, with too much holiday time on my hands, I offer this Hawkeye version, "The Battle of Pasadena":
In 2015 we took a little ride
Along with Iowa’s Hawkeyes ‘cross the mighty Cont’nent Divide.
We took a little happy and we took a little mean
And we caught the Stanford Card’nal in the town of Pasadene.
We launched our plan and the Card’nal kept a’comin. They wasn’t quite as cocky as they was a while ago. We ran another play and they began retreatin’
Down the Arroyo Seco to the Gulf of Diego.
We looked ‘cross the sideline and we see’d the Card’nal come.
And there must have been a hundred of ‘em formin’ one big scrum.
They stepped so high and they made the Stanfords sing.
We stood by our Hawkeye team and didn’t say a thing.
New KF said we could take ‘em by surprise
If we didn’t change our game plan ‘til we looked ‘em in the eye.
We held our line ‘til we see’d their faces well.
Then we opened up with Jordan’s runs and really gave ‘em…well
Yeah, Stanford ran through the bandsmen and they ran through the tunnels
And they ran through the grandstands where a player shouldn’t go.
They ran so fast that the guards couldn’t catch ‘em
Down the Arroyo Seco to the Gulf of Diego.
We fired our long-bombs ‘til CJ’s right arm tired out.
So we grabbed another Card’nal and we fought another bout.
We called on our four-headed monster, and
Gave ‘em all the ball
And when they saw what happened, Hawkeye fans stomped and squalled.
Yeah, Stanford ran through the bandsmen and they ran through the tunnels
And they ran through the grandstands where a player shouldn’t go.
They ran so fast that the guards couldn’t catch ‘em
Down the Arroyo Seco to the Gulf of Diego.
