I haven't followed all that closely but I noticed that all the current seniors are starters. When you look a the lower classes there are plenty of guys you wouldn't expect to ever see the lineup. Guys like Perez, Northrup, Murphy, Alvarez, McDonald, Shaw, Bowman, etc...

There are only 3 upper classman, all of which are juniors, that aren't starters, i.e. Brantley, Laux and McQuillan. Laux is in line to at least be a 1 year starter. Has there been a lot of backup wrestlers that have quit in the past year?

What about the sophomore class from the year before? It seems like that is the typical time frame when they quit the program.

This year we have:
11 Freshman
9 RS Freshman
6 Sophomores
4 Juniors
5 Seniors

Recent transfers or other....
Seth Gross
Lance Evans. Wartburg
Logan Thompsen. Wartburg
Matt Wempen
Luke Ericksen

After this year it's all downhill for years to come :(

Here's the list of wrestlers no longer with the program that would have eligibility.

Paddock
Lambotte
Ryan
Graves
Berge
Marlin
Shelton
Thomsen
Jean-Jacques
Bess
Green
Erickson
Woodard
J. Turk
Gross

That seems like a pretty high attrition rate but perhaps not surprising. It's a tough sport to last 4-5 years if you're only wrestling open tournaments. A roster of this could probably still beat ISU and place top 20 at nats.

Sorry Mepodawg....wrong brother and I see that I also spelled the name wrong. BTW one of the best wrestlers that I had a pleasure of watching over the years. Wish him luck at Coe.

Consider the normal academic load in college and then add practice and lifting on top of that. If your not going to start how bad do you want to put in that much time? How does it affect your grades? I cant blame a backup for not finishing. They have their whole lives ahead of them. They have to really love it if they stick it out as a backup. There isnt the same opportunity to get cleanup minutes in wrestling like their is in other sports. Maybe 1 match in front of the Carver crowd as we see once in a while. Injuries and wear and tear have to be factored in as well. Hats off to the kids who stick it out. No blame to those who dont.

Some good kids, but only Gross was a loss of NCAA team points. Wish we had him next year at 33, though I know that sentiment isn't shared by all.

To the extent that their departures freed up any extra money for Kemerer, Marinelli, Lee, or Warner, we owe them a thank you.

I wonder if Marlin or Skon could have qualified? Marlin fairly recently finished runner up at the NJCAA tournament.

Worst sport in the world to be sub-varsity. I would have been surprised if there wasn't a huge attrition rate. We see the same thing in HS and youth wrestling.
