SHANNON, Ireland, March 12 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday said the issue of how the United States is going to "take over Canada" will not be discussed at a gathering of G7 foreign ministers due to take place in Canada on Thursday.

The foreign ministers of the Group of Seven major democracies - Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States - will meet at the river resort of La Malbaie, Quebec on March 12-14 for the first time since President Donald Trump returned to power in January.

When asked by reporters about Trump's comments on making Canada the 51st U.S. state, Rubio instead talked about the areas of cooperation between the United States and Canada including defense of North American airspace and Ukraine.

"We're going to be focused in the G7 on all of those things. That's what the meeting is about. It is not a meeting about how we're going to take over Canada," he said.

U.S. ties with Canada have soured following Trump's repeated comments about Washington's northern neighbor being its 51st U.S. state and the Republican president referring to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as its "governor".

The two neighbors are also locked in a trade war. Trump increased tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, accusing the country of failing to do enough to stem the flow of the deadly fentanyl opioid and its precursor chemicals into the U.S. and also as he moves to reorder global trade norms in favor of the United States.

Rubio said Trump was not singling out any country but trying to help develop a domestic industrial capability as the current situation threatened U.S. national security in the long run.
The top U.S. diplomat said despite these tensions, he expected to have constructive conversations with G7 allies.

I hate myself for caucusing for him years ago. Man that was a terrible pick on my part.
10 years ago he had a soul. 10 years ago he was normal. Now he’s bent the knee, and for some reason thinks he’s the one person who will escape Trump’s orbit with their reputation intact. He’s a fool to think this cabinet role gets him a leg up in a presidential primary.

How do you guys feel knowing you are the butt of the joke about the USA taking over Canada? It's not gonna happen.

You guys are the one who is scared of the snipe while camping.

incredible...the president makes repeated comments over the span of WEEKS about Canada becomig the 51st state (which we all apparently agree is an idiotic, nonsensical suggestion)

and your criticism is aimed at...commenters here

makes perfect sense

Everyone knows it isn't going to happen, it's the abject stupidity to say it in the first place that's the issue. And then to keep saying just to keep the reactions going is doubling down on the stupid.

But I get it, stupidity is lauded as clever in your world.

Honestly, it's a little tough on me. I come here and get totally owned by you, and I feel sad on the inside. Kind of like, what's it all about sad on the inside.

Thread title: shouldn't it be "taking" place?

I'm not sure if you're doing a joke or not. But when the thread title was created, it was Wednesday the 12th, the meeting in question is on Thursday the 13th, which is in the future, relative to Wednesday the 12th. Typically in English, we would use 'take' to refer to something in the future, as opposed to 'taking' which would refer to something that is current happening.

Hope that helps. If it was a joke, uh good one!

Trump has really painted himself into some difficult corners with Canada, tariffs and Russia.

Ease up, he's still in the, "I didn't have a choice", deflection phase.

Upon further review, I agree with you! Perhaps my brain just wasn't processing at 100% yet....though even at 100 no guarantees

With Trump's rhetoric, Rubio cannot not talk about it. He has to be all in and try to convince the Canadians to adopt a peaceful solution.

This meeting could get ugly for Lil Marco.
Yeah, just the fact that in his statement he used the phrase "how we are going to take over Canada" means that the tRump admin is planing to try to annex Canada.

This is not Ankeny, IA annexing the south part of Huxley. You dont wave a wand and say Canada we just annexed you and we all know why that is not what would need to happen. A sovereign country would have to vote themselves to allow this to happen and join the US.

Oh he has done way more than bend a knee, he has literally kissed tRump's Rump and he licks his boots. And I would not put it past little marco for doing much worse things
