Ruddock

Anyone hope for this guy at UoM? He seemed very solid in Iowa, is his three pick game an anomaly?
Yeah, that was an anomaly. I think it was a combination of new system, new receivers and a bit more coaching from Harbaugh as far as slinging it. But JH also is likely going to require him to go deep much more often than Iowa required and that is NOT his strength at all

IMO, he definitely seems to be throwing with more velocity as his arm strength appears a bit improved but I also think mechanically he was tinkered with. In the past, his action with the ball in his right hand was somewhat like a HS kid with small hands who has to keep RH under the ball as it goes back. Didn't see that last week.

Great post thanks. There are two things with Hawkeyes you can always count on. Classy fans and a tough football team. Thanks.

At least one of those INTs was entirely on the receiver. Even the pbp guys were calling it out.

One was a longstanding issue of his - staring the receiver down.

Also, the end showed prototypical Jake, imo, with crunch time he moved it well, and relatively quickly downfield for a score.

Rudock tends to make very quick pre-snap reads ... and because he is so smart, he tends to get the team in a good play. However, those pre-snap and quick reads sometimes leads him to not consider some WR routes that he should still be considering. In particular, he has a tendency to work the edges of the field more than over the middle. Furthermore, he tends not to throw deep unless the guy is in man coverage ... AND, he typically doesn't throw it unless the guy is wide open.

Consequently, because of the above, Rudock doesn't often get sacked ... nor does he often throw picks. Thus, the three picks is most definitely an anomaly.

However, that said, on some outside throws ... since he wants a guy to be "wide open" ... he sometimes waits too long to pull the trigger. Thus, that can sometimes give DBs enough time to make a good break on the ball.

It always appeared to me that he was pretty darn good at picking apart zone coverage. He knew where to go with the ball. However, when there is tight coverage on the WRs ... he tends to be really hesitant to let the WR make a play on the ball. Thus, opposing Ds tend to cheat up when defending against Rudock led offenses.

I see promise in his performance. His arm strength is certainly decent. Once he gets dialed in, I hope he kicks ass. If he leaves a little off either of those long passes, they're easy TD's.

Of course, I really hope CJB lives up to the promise of last season and our first game.

What you saw is what you're going to get. He doesn't have the arm strength to make an accurate deep throw, and he's afraid to get hit. The tantrum that he threw on the sideline during the Pitt game last year when he got benched tells me that he's not much of a leader either. You're in for some disappointment if you think that he's going to be the factor that wins games for you

He didn't throw a tantrum. There was a thread about this and it was agreed by non idiots that it was not a tantrum.

He isn't afraid to get hit.

While the "story" from the Utah game was his 3 INTS, as mentioned one wasn't even his fault.

I thought the bigger story was him missing 3 wide open deep balls. Those were all TDs if he hits on any of them. As others have said, an accurate deep ball isn't really his strength.

I hope he does well at Michigan. Things will get better for him as he and the WR get on the same page.

I don't get the notion that it was weird that he threw 3 picks because he is not turnover prone. He turned the ball over in almost every big game Iowa had and his first year starting he had a lot of picks. I think at Iowa in his two years is TD to INT ration was 2-1. And if he was asked to throw more I am sure he would have thrown more picks.

He's college footballs poor man version of Alex Smith. The interceptions are an anomaly, but failure to consistently stretch the field, poorly thrown deep balls, and predetermined check downs are of the norm. He also takes a lot of bad sacks. If he was the best qb on Iowa's roster he wouldn't have transferred, so take that into consideration when wondering on how good he's going to be for Michigan.

Everyone had nice things to say about him. Personally, I'm happy he's gone and I can't wait to see how he performs at Michigan. Many of his teammates did not have a warm feeling for him. He has happy feet. His arm strength may have improved but the kid cannot throw a deep route and he proved it against Utah. He drove me out of my mind. The funny thing about it is that when Beathard makes a mistake I don't care because he brings so much more to the table. Jake is just going to throw those dink throws from his happy feet and he's going to drive you nuts!!! There's just something missing with Jake. For sure he does not have the "it" factor.

And may I just add that the Michigan fans are very friendly and classy as well. I've always had fun on our trips to Ann Arbor.

He hit the Tight End over the middle in between the zones so that's an improvement already!

Rudock showed promise in the Utah game. He handled the pressure better than I thought he would. The INTs and the deep over throws were the story. I see the interceptions being cleaned up a bit. But, I see the inaccuracy on the deep ball being an ongoing issue. The system is very similar to Iowa's

Likes: Harbaugh tried the downfield stuff much more than Iowa. I like the pass protection the Oline gave Jake. UM's receivers are an upgrade. Michigan's defense is good. I like Jake Butt & I cannot lie

Concerns; deep ball accuracy, grace under pressure, tendency to check down too quickly. Running game

The thin air in Salt Lake City got to him
The ball took off on him big time.

2 of the 3 picks were not his fault. the first pick the wr ran the wrong route. the third pick the wr didn't run the route. it was the same true freshmen wr both times. different game if wr runs the route both times
