Coach Jim Caldwell said "there's not a phase" of the position Lions sixth-round QB Jake Rudock "has under control" after OTAs and minicamp.

Rudock gives Rams QB Sean Mannion a running as the most wasted draft pick of the decade. The rookie has been vastly outplayed by veteran Dan Orlovsky this spring and has virtually no chance to pass him on the depth chart. Rudock spent one year at Michigan but doesn't have an NFL-caliber arm.

Meh, he's a Lions QB. Name the last one we had that understand any phase of the game.

1 playoff win, 60 years; 2 Hall of fame talents retire at 30!

....and this is a shock to some people?

We saw him for 2 years, and then another year at Michigan. He wasn't good at all here, and he was decent at Michigan. I never once saw "NFL quarterback" when I watched him play.

He had a solid year last year but played with a wealth of talent around him including many legit receivers. Lots of his stats were racked up against the inferior opponents on his schedule including FLA that barely beat a 1-2 win FCS team. That was not your typical FLA team regardless of winning the much weaker of the two SEC divisions. Pull up his numbers agsinst Utah, OSU, MSU, etc. Watch highlights where Michigan receivers were making dazzling catches or running open with no one within 10 yards. Turning a 5 yard screen into 40 yards.

The Michigan brand name experience got him noterierty and drafted. Good kid, solid QB with limitations but NFL contributor would surprise me.

Let it go people! The guy worked his tail off for the Hawks! We should show some appreciation and respect instead of the continued criticism!
I am with you Freyvet, but you might as well get used to it they will be beating on Jake for ten years..... Thanks...

But didn't he quit on the team once it became obvious the staff put CJ (correctly) ahead of him?
He had options and exercised those options. Worked out well for both teams and worked out well for CJ and Jake! I appreciate what he gave the Hawks! I also respect the decisions these young college athletes have to make - not always will it favor MY beloved Hawks! But it doesn't always mean they are doing anything more than trying to find the best athletic and academic experience for them - and because so many factors go into this, it is always fluid.

Yeah, really had a bad year at Michigan - kinda proved that all the negative Hawks were right - kid couldn't play a lick.

He wasn't right for our system and he fits perfectly into Harbaughs system. He is a guy that is good in the short passing game and handing it off 70% of the time. When he was at Iowa the O-line wasn't as good as it was last year and he didn't have the ability to scramble and bye time for himself, he just dumped it off to the 3 yard out. CJ has a big arm and allows us to stretch the field and hit the long passes. I thank Jake for his time here but he was a better fit elsewhere. I just can't believe someone drafted him knowing he struggles to throw the ball farther than 25 yards.

he struggled to throw it deep for the first half of the season coaches figured it out and he was hitting it wr 50 yard downthe field for the second half of the season. first half of the season was not great second half of the season was great.

Yikes! What was that from? The Detroit Free Press? They didn't pull any punches.

Not surprising

Agree with both points.

While not an effective scrambler as he was not elusive in the pocket enabling him to buy time for down field throws, he was in my opinion very effective or at the very least timely as a runner.

Michigan's running game to put it politely was pedestrian last season finishing 83rd in the nation.

His 2.86 ypa (which includes sacks) is only 1.32 yards behind our leading rusher De'veon Smith's 4.18.

His 4 rushing TD's was third behind team leader Smith's 6.

He improved over the course of the season in distance and accuracy and bagged quite a few Michigan single season records and high ranks.

Seems to be a smart high quality kid, committed, tough and teachable.

I wish him the best in the NFL and for the life of me cannot understand the animus of so may toward him on this board.

Go Blue!

VicValiant, you nailed it from a college competition perspective. Excellent description. As for animus, it's the internet. What do you expect? Actually, most of what I've read here about Rudock the student-athlete is very positive, very supportive. He is seen here by most as a competent game manager with valuable skills that did not translate into true stardom either at Iowa or Michigan. Doesn't mean he wasn't a very good college QB or, more importantly, a quality human being with a great future, most likely in medicine. We wish him well!!!!

Ruddock wasn't without talent here. I just think the OC cowered him into being a "safe" player, which effectively neutralized him. He displayed a much more wide-open game at Michigan.

You lost me when you called that Florida team inferior and mention their win over an FCS team.

That Florida team had a DOMINANT defense. They were top 5 in most big categories nationally until Michigan whipped them. Rudock helped Michigan score a season high points against them and they played teams like Ole Miss, Alabama, LSU, and Florida State.

Is Rudock going to be a great NFL QB? Highly unlikely. We all knew that. He was a late draft pick that might end up sticking as a career backup. Then again he might not. That's basically the story for all late draft picks.

I've nothing against Jake but I think he was a very good student that wanted to go to medical school. The word was that he transferred because Michigan had even a better

When Jake was at Iowa he said he wanted to attend Med school and he transferred for his last year because Mich has even better Med. If he's as smart as I thought he would know he can't play Pro football and get on with Med school.
