I always assumed that changing the kickoff into end zone coming out to the 25 yd. line had to with creating more offense? if so, why is a punt still just brought out to the 20??
i'm not that bright. please explain.

And finally teams are figuring out to kick it high inside the 5 yard line and you will probably get to the 20 on average. I expect this rule to change again over time.

Thanks for the answer. but begs the question then why not do away with kickkoffs altogether? win the coin flip, get it at the 25.

Fans like kick returns, and if there were no kickoffs, there could be no onsides kicks.

That’s probably a question that’s been debated by the rules committee more than the fans will ever know.

Assuming they’re trying to keep the rules as original as possible with safety in mind.

Their intent was to discourage KR and have teams kneel it. If they want to get rid of KR just move the KO line up to the 40yd like Hs.

IIRC, they originally moved the kickoff line to have more touchbacks and thus fewer opportunities for runbacks, which are dangerous. As a sop, they let the receiving team start five yards farther up the field. Punt returns aren't considered as dangerous.
